: manual tranny fluids

Ok, im doing a "once over" for the scout...just your standard tune up all the way around, BUT i was just wondering if yall scouters flush your MANUAL tranny. I tried last time and had no luck in a difference of shiftting, what i did was drain the old oil and put in some new 50 weight oil and some ATF (only a little) drove it for a total of about an hr and then drained that out. Put some more straight 50wt oil and ran that for the new fluid and could tell no difference for smoother shifting.

1.First off do yall flush your manual tranny and then change the oil or do you just change the oil??

2.Second, if you do flush the tranny what do you use to flush it(gearoil and ATF, or just ATF or just gear oil..or what??clue me in), and how long do you flush it for??

3.Third, do yall just take of the transmission and xfercase cover over the sticks and just funnel the new oil in from there??

I was going through through the engine compartment and over the bellhousing to funnel the new oil in, and that was a biotch...i should have just taken off the cover inside the cab that is over the tranny.

4.Fourth, what weight oil do you run in the transfer case??

Thanks, just want to keep the life going in the tranny. It is the rare and widely acclaimed t-19 wide box:flipoff2:

Red Line 90 Synthetic, should work for the tranny also. $25.00 for a gallon which will cover the t-case and tranny. Another gallon will get your diffs as well.

Damn...sounds like some high quality shiot! Can you get that stuff at any parts store, or is it like that Amsoil stuff and you have to find a dealer for it.

Also do you guys flush your t19's, and what is YOUR process for flushing them out.

thanks

I use plain old 90w dino juice. I see NO reason to waste my money on synthetics in a rig that gets its fluids changed more often than any manufacturer would suggest

I use Torco manual tranny fluid in my t-case...(but, that's because it came with the Atlas!) :flipoff2:

I just flushed mine out last night. I had the tranny out though so I could swap the guts with wide guts. I stripped the guts out to the bare case and took it to the car wash. Sprayed it down with engine degreaser and then let it have it with the high pressure wand.:flipoff2: The case is now spotless.... no metallic shavings or anything.... hell, it even powerwashed the magnet off the bottom of the case.:D Yes, this is a little extreme for a 'routine maintenance' type of flush but like I said, I had it out and stripped. Anyway, the easiest way I've found to refill the tranny is to unscrew the shifter and pull it out. Then you have a big hole on the top of the tranny to pour your oil in. Couldn't be much easier to access than that.

Oh yeah, I run straight 50wt. engine oil in both the T19 and D300.

TORC, thats what i run...but from reading looks like the BINDERS have been running 90 wt....do any of yall have a comparison betweet the two?? I am trying to go for a little smoother shifting and first sticks sometimes in the morning...it really doesn't matter that much to me, but i think it would be cool to do a little comparison and see what works better.

50wt. engine oil has about the same viscosity as 90wt. gear oil. If you can find plain 90wt. gear oil, run it. You are looking for GL-1 gear lube. Stay away from GL-2, GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5 for use in the tranny.

I run 90wt gl1 in my trany and tcase.

yall have been cool:cool: Thanks, now i know that TORC has the best and cleanest way to flush out the tranny, but when mounted what do yall do, i tried running straight 50wt and some ATF in it so flush it, i ran it for a total of about an 1 hour just driving around, but then i drained that stuff and put the new 50wt in and really didn't tell a difference.

This article explains it pretty well.

So what I'm getting from that article, is that prolly the best, and most economical fluid to use in a T-19 and Dana 20 is straight up SAE-50 engine oil?

Thats what it reads like. My sm420 and 18 both call for 90w gl1 per their manuals. I would imagine that 50w would suffice. The 300 Im swapping in had ATF in it when I got it, and showed no excessive wear.

OK maybe im gay and the only one that FLUSH's a manual tranny. I know now whats the best oil to run (the one that i have been running 50wt, or 90 wt gear oil gl1). BUT want i now need to know is the people out there that flush their manual tranny what do they do?? I was saying that when i flush my tranny i use 50wt and mix it with ATF and run the transmission for about an 1hr and then drain and then put JUST straight 50 wt in the tranny...but that has not worked well. Anything that works better, other than TORCS method??

Last time I "flushed" my tranny or tcase I used diesel. Course I have that around. I've also used kerosene in the past. Both clean well enough

Serious?? Then woud mineral spirits work...i would assume if kerosene does then mineral spirits would.

mike

I didnt really run it with diesel or kerosene in the case, just washed the case and gears off with it.

OK, well this is in the scout so i will just drain in and put some new oil in it...Haven't heard of a good way to flush it while inside the scout. Oh well...BUT would mineral spirits work?? Or should i just use kerosene, Im getting a sm465 so would you just say use kerosene to clean it out, or would mineral spirits work better??

I would remove the shifter from the tower, and fill the thing with something like Kerosene, or Gunk Motor flush.

Leave it sit for about an hour, then drain it.

Refill with fresh 50W Valvoline Racing or 50W transmission oil (if you can find it, most tractor and large truck shops have it), and drive it till you feel the need to change it again (usually once a year).

Not saying it is the best alternative, but it works for me.

that sounds pretty much like what I do. That motor flush is pretty much kerosene btw IIRC.

I used to have a ford ranger with the 5 speed and it called for "ATF" in the trany. U could run ATF in the T19 for a few miles and then drain it and it wont hurt anything. My scout with the T19 I run 90wt gl1 in the tranfer case. My scout with the 727 I run ATF in the transfer case.

will coleman fuel work or gasoline...thats what i have in the garage.

mike

Gasoline will work, but it will leave the surface completely bare (kerosene and diesel have some oil in them so it leaves a residue). I would NOT use white gas (coleman fuel) that stuffs far too volitile IMO

I just drained it and topped it off from the top with some straght 50wt...I use black rtv silicone for just about everthing, i was just wondering if I *need* to use a gasket (the one on there was really thin and broken) or if just forming your own gasket is fine for this kind of application. Also if yall are interested the shifter tower case had t-19 4B pressed on it, and the tag has these #'s

Now im almost 100% sure it's the wide, i have 4.10's in the axles and 35's and can drop the clutch with no gas and won't stall, also one of my friends that has a scout has the wide in it and says it feels like the wide
