Well in ordre to fit the dual mini tcases and still have a reasonable rear DS I have decidedd to move the rear axle back. A lot....

suspension will still be 55 rear springs in a SO configuration with a Tacoma rear axle (60") and inboarded rear springs.
Wheel base should be around 104-106"
(perhaps one day I will do a SR in the front and get more wb but who knows..)
Comments?

Wow..the things we 40 guys will do to crawl...

I'm assuming you're going to extend the rear frame rails, could be kind cool looking with a body extension to cover it...

The Taco axle should work, assuming you use the 8.4", and not the 8" one... I've seen a guy tear some teeth off his pinion on a 8" diff with 38.5's.

The Tundra axles are a bit wider than the Taco, and are gusseted from the factory, too... :D

Looking good. That is starting to look like our FJ40. I think we set up the wb for 110"

Sawzall is coming out.

60" is as wide as I really want to go. Besides, it was free :D

The rear frame rails are not going to be extended. The spring hangers will be mounted to the BACK of the frame.

Tracy, Got any pics of your 40?
(If you can't post them I can)

Right on man!! looks killer. I left my hangers in the stock location, and went to town with a crazy ass double shackler set up. That with my super spongy springs (That I still have to pick up:D) should net me some of that "Dude is it broken" kinda flex! :D

Jason -

Looks like you are pulling the rear x-member and fabbing a new bumper/x-member that will also hang the rear shackle?

Have you looked at using waggie springs like Frosty did?

I will likely do it the Frosty way this winter, but may use the 55 springs pushed further back and use the front mounts like Frosty...

Cool when you can back up to a cinder block wall and keep backing up....:flipoff2:

Yep,
I like the ride and flex that I get out of my Fj55 springs.. Besides, the 44044's cost money ;)

Basically what I am doing is what frosty did but with FJ55 springs (except with the rear hanger moved back even farther). The only problem is that they are long enough that you will never be able to back up to a cinder block wall and start to climb. The shackle will stick out too far..
A possible slight decrease in lift is the only problem I see so far..

jason just some food for thought, i havent been able to try this yet, i was gonna do it on my patrol but thats gone now.
basically i wanted to make the drop away shackles, like buggies but with tube instead of spring, follow me? anyhow the tube for the drop away would be mounted to the frame rails and extend back out like an extension but able to drop. make sense?, what ya think of that?

That's what I'm running on mine, actually I have been running this kind of setup for about 4 years now(it's kinda old school) I won't praise it nor will I knock it. After experimenting with the drop bars locked up, I found that I still had almost as much droop as with them un hooked(I do run 54" springs on rear though and it flexes more than enough). The bottom line, on the flats with big rocks or showing off wheel travel, it works good. On aggressive climbs/ledges, it can get too bouncy. I will try to get some pics and re-post here;)

I hear exactly what you are talking about. The only problem is controling the rear end when you get any amount of wheelhop. A buddy is working on a design right now that will allow the spring to pull away from the frame by quite a bit (sort of similar to Helocat's front suspension, no shackle) but only one side at a time. So if you jumped the rig or got hung up the rear axle would only drop as far as the springs would allow. It looks like it is going to work out fairly well.
I'll probably have it on my cruiser in a coupel of months to see how well it does in real life. Either that or do a similar link suspension to Wolf359's and run coils or coilovers..

Whee!!!!

ok heres a goofy idea, but thats what were here for right?? how about shocks? yup mounted from the back of the cruzah and to the end of the sub frame/shackle at about a 45* angle? it would let it drop and dampen wheelhop. huh?

Jason M

Don't think it is goofy at all. In fact Rancho made a set of shocks specifically for this purpose. They were called "kicker" shocks.
I just do not think that with the amount of axle wrap (and the possible consequences) that a cruiser gets it would work well. Although did anyone actually see a traction bar on Frostys rig???

I already have a nice beefy traction bar (Already modified Nolen :flipoff2: ) And will probably just continue to use it. When it is attached it really works well.

Although, is there a good reason to run the shocks at an angle front to back instead of side to side? I would think they would have more protection if they were mounted in a plane directly above the rear axle..

for mine, i welded mounts to the bottom of the axle (to fit the 9012s) and then mounted the shocks in to the centre from that

i backed one into a big rock on the weekend :( and dinted the bottom of it, i think off the top of the axle is awesome if you have the room......clearance is PHAT, the more the better.... get them up high and out the way!

frosty may not have a wrap bar...but didnt he have a D70, and F150 springs....that'd probly help :D
