I have an 83cj7 and I’m going to do some trimming. :D
I was thinking I’d use the same gauge steel to close the openings in the wheel wells.
Anybody know a place to get sheet steel in San Jose? Maybe even on the weekend?
Thanks,
-Pete

I've bought a lot of steel at SIMSMetal on Monterey Hwy recently. The only 18 gauge sheet they have is galvanized though. I ended up with 16 gauge for my project.

Go with the galvy, grind off the coating and go to town, why not... modern jeep tubs are galvanized anyway.

welding galvanized gives off zinc fumes which are really bad for you.
if you use galv, make sure you have very good ventilation.

And.... it can be tough to get paint to stick to it. Those two things made it not worth it for me.

I wouldnt go with galvy on a CJ tub,....you will never be able to get rust on the new area, to catch up with the rest of the parts.:flipoff2:

try a self-etching primer. usually for the gun crowd, but you can get it in rattle cans from eastwoodco.com

Cute Monday. :P
Dust, thanks. That's usefull, since I have a hard time getting material during normal business hours.

Sims doesn't cut sheetmetal to your size, but does have a small
buy decent selection. Julian is the manager, and Enrique is the
top-dog in the new-used steel sales office....
I've been shopping there for awhile now, and would surely hate
to see that place dissapear.... (hopefully never happen)

.30/pound used/surplus steel
1.75/pound for aluminum or stainless
10 dollar minimum sale.... no exceptions...
cut charges can vary from 2.00 per torch cut, to a little more
for big cuts.... (by the dude a coke and you're set!)
