I was (still am) working on a intermitant no start problem in an 89 Cherokee. I think I have that narrowed down to a couple of things. Went to try and start it again and the Fawking key switch locked up. It is stuck in the on position and won't budge. It has always been a little loose I figure mabye a cylinder/tumbler in the lock fell out or got jammed. I can not figure out how to get the damn thing out. I have a Haynes but it's of no use for this. I'm a broke mofo ( laid off for 9 months now ) so I can spend my beer money on parts or a better manual, if I get the book than I can't afford the parts to fix thing. Please help!!!! does anyone know how to get the key switch out( with the fawking key in it )? Yes, I did search. Over a 1000 threads  and no luck. I am beging to understand why you guys call them heeps. In the last 9 months( of which I have been laid off ) I have put about $1500 in parts and labor and been towed 3 times due to a fuel pump, the fuel pump line blowing off after it was replaced, a neutral bypass switch, and now what is probably a stator or a CPS. I am just about ready to go out and unload a full clip in this thing. Oh well, at least it still looks good  Sorry for the vent and thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I am sure it is very similar to my CJ. Pull the wheel, make a little compressor to get the horn snap ring out, then take off the turn signal switch, below that there should be a screw or something on the right side that holds the key switch in. I "think" my CJ has a big screw that holds it in.

Now the lock mechanism that you are going to take out will drive a little gear like thing that pulls the rod that goes down the steering column to the ACTUAL switch. I bet somepart of the rod mechanism has stripped out or broken.

If you have a camara I would pop a few pics as you go incase you forget where all the parts go :D

Good Luck, Hope this helps some!

mine was similar it was the iginition switch, its actually ontop of the column closer to the firewall, Your key turns a tumbler that pulls a rod up and down the top of the column that connects to the ignition switch.
