: mix and match leaf springs

Well, my stock front leaf springs are shot!
Jeep is sitting on the bump stops in the front. Guess the twisting was too much for the skinny 2" springs

Any hints on make a pair that will work for this summer out of the below?

On Jeep::
Rear CJ HD spring, 2” lift with military wrap. Holding out ok, about 1" lift
Front CJ HD Springs with military wrap, shot. Built room to bolt up 2.5” springs

In Picture:
95 YJ 6cly Springs matching set. Maybe use all 4 to make two good springs?
19?? XJ rear springs. Maybe use to make a cheap military wrap on the YJ springs?

Longer is better, more thinner springs the better, no?
They will get used and I want them to flex, a couple of season is ok with me.
I was thinking of keeping the rear in, and making a single pack for the front out of the below.
Open to any suggestions. Future plans are for longer leaf springs in the back, but not right now.

The Stock CJ spring flexing

I'd like to match the flex with a combo of the above.

Umm yeah....you see that spring in the middle pic....thats a bad thing. Yeah its nasty flex, but that springs life will be significantly shortened if it keeps doing that.

Best bastard packs I have ever made from YJ springs.

Buy a SHIT TON of 5 leaf YJ springs...

Keep 4 sets to build off of. Keep the 2 bottom support leafs, take out the 3rd and 4th, keep the main eye leaf.

Take all the main leafs from the other spring packs and cut the main eyes off, springs down to size and stack them so they progressively get larger just like a normal spring pack, I would start off with 6 leafs in the rear, and 7 leafs in the front.

Add or subtract a cut down main leaf as neccessary.

I had flex similar to your friend and my springs never went into that much of a negative arch. Your friend has ZERO support leafs, just long main leafs, hes got the right idea, but those packs have a short life span without the support leafs. Jesus even his bottom leaf is in a negative arch LOL thats definetly not supposed to happen.

Thanks for the reply!

That's my Jeep!

Yes I removed the last leaf  Springs are meant to be replaced.
So far that rear spring has lasted 14-15 trips out, they seem to be holding up ok. Only lost 1"
I see your point, as that is what did in the fronts.

That chart is pretty helpful. When I look at some of the vehicles (ex. S10/S15/S10 Blazer) it says # of leaves 4 (3/1). What does that mean when compared to others that just say 4?

Brad just spend the money and get stock replacement, CJ rears from JC Whitney for the front.

I mixed and matched my YJ springs with some XJ springs. Added the longer XJs to my YJ and added helper to the bottom. Running a six pack and seems to be doing very well. Still need to lower my bump stops tough to reduce the negative arch thinking maybe about 3" of uptravel.:garfield:

That WAS the plan...

The money I save is now going towards this project...

Waggy front main leaf, throw the rest away and add 90'ish Dodge Cummins rear pack, minus main leaf and over load.

Might be too much for a small Jeep but it is working well on my FSJ. Leafs are thick and have a good wrap bar that keep the leafs from sliping.

FYI, the key is to use the above not buy more junk.

The above would be too much for a light CJ-7
Can't see using 3/4 or 1 ton springs on a 1/4 ton vehicle.

Thick leaves are what I want to AVOID!

No worries, I often skim post as well :grinpimp:

So what about this combination ?

1. YJ 5 leaf pack main leaf
2. XJ main leaf spring as a military wrap (re-drill center hole if needed. cut off excess)
3. YJ 4 leaf main pack with eyes cut off
4. YJ 5 leaf 2nd spring
5. YJ 4 leaf 2nd spring, trim the ends down ~2"
6. YJ 5 leaf pack 3rd leaf
7. YJ 4 leaf pack 3rd leaf
No Overload springs

On my yj i used front 7 leaf waggy's all around. In the front i take the waggy springs and flip them around for the 2" stretch then : 1st leaf is a stock front waggy 2nd is an xj and the bigger spring eye makes a military wrap on the smaller eye of the waggy main leaf which would be at the fixed point on the frame. My 3rd through 6th leafs are stock waggy. I do not use the last leaf from the stock pack.
