: 18-2.46 gear swap into 20 case.
iscout62 08-30-2002, 04:37 PM Has anyone done the gear swap from an 18 into the 20 case, adding the 33 tooth bronco gear?
I have all the stuff to make it work, but I need to know how the old 18 twin stick it supposed to work with the conversion?
From the looks of things as is, I'll have an extra output flange, directly behind the front output flange.
Anyone messed with this configuration before?
Slagburn 08-30-2002, 05:53 PM Search, newbie.
I'm only saying that because it's been posted on recently. Here's a hint: Google search: Nutter Dana 20 Bronco gears.
And the Dana 18 twin sticks don't work with it. Yes, they will end up being the shift levers, but it is up to you to fab the linkage and all that. Somebody does make a kit for it for 100 bucks, Missouri 4 wheelers supply perhaps? They're on the web too.
:flipoff2:
iscout62 08-30-2002, 10:26 PM Yeah, Yeah. That's what I've been working from. The info that is published on the swap has a couple of vague areas. Hence my question.
SO the 18 twinstick will not work eh? That's good to know. Is there anything else that is not mentioned in that article that I'll need to plan for before I mess something up in a major way?
:D
iscout62 08-31-2002, 10:10 PM Anyone done this swap? There has to be one of you Jeepers that did gears on the cheap..:jeep: :blender:
Flip1YJ 09-01-2002, 07:50 AM Here is the source for the swap Nutter Dana20 (http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/convxfer/2.46-20/)
It does say right in the article that the Dana18 shifters can be adapted with custom brackets and linkage , if that's considered vauge.....
Slagburn 09-01-2002, 03:38 PM I did the swap, except I used all Bronco gears and a Dana 18 input gear, instead of Nutter's all Dana 18 with only the Bronco sliding gear.
What's to know? Take it apart, grind the case, reassemble w/ new gears. Voila. No you don't have an extra output flange, why would you?
iscout62 09-01-2002, 04:43 PM Well, I'm starting to think that this swap was not really what I wanted to do. At this point, the terra 3.15 would have been a better waste of time money. Given I'd still use the new d-20 shifter.
I wanted to keep the twin stick from my old d-18, so that I could dis-engage the front stub. I now know that I'll need to use the dana 20 front output housing, and use the 18 twin stick front housing on something else.
No biggie, I really wanted to have the option to run 2/low, in addition to the 4low/4high configuration without having to fab up a shifter that articulates from the belly of the case. (does someone have an option?)
I thought about machining a new gear selector shaft. The shaft would shift the front (d-18)stub spur. On the same shaft, I wanted to move the rear slider from the Bronco d-20 rear slider for the rear axle, but there is just not enough sliding throw avaliable in the front (d-18)housing to make the (rear) slider gear engage into a 2wd/1:1 position.
I'm thinking that there is some other way do do this, I've searched for that missouri club, but havn't turned up a location, contact or website. Any help would be appreciated.

Sundowner 09-03-2002, 03:59 AM do a search on my name and on the name Cmegoup. there was a VERY in depth conversation about this some time ago and Cmegoup had a great deal more insight on this swap than the nutter site has.
alsp do a search on obrien's gears. Expensive, but a hell of a lot deeper than the tera gears.
iscout62 09-03-2002, 10:31 AM Thanks. This is what I needed.
Cheers.

iscout62 09-04-2002, 12:05 PM For anyone looking into doing this swap, please DON"T follow the 'nutter' guide that's floating out there on the web. The gear number that "nutter' is telling you to use has an incorrcet pitch angle. I met up with Jack O'brian yesterday, he cleared up all the mess I had. The gear you want for the 'nutter' style swap is a -37, not a -58. Oh, I read through some old threads, and Jack does in fact have low 3.x AND the higher ratio 4.x conversions for both Dana-18's and 20's. These are really trick case conversions for those who rather not buy an atlas.
;)
Cheers.

Chagrin.
:D
wolfthing 2000 09-04-2002, 09:21 PM I just purchased the -58 and you say I need a -37////???????
Is the -58 Bronco gear not the right one to use with my Jeep 18 gear set in my 20 case?????
Help!!!!!!
Dave:confused:
iscout62 09-04-2002, 09:39 PM Yeppers. (assuming your 20 case is NOT a Bronco case)
Yeah, the gear you bought does has the correct tooth count, however the gear pitch is not corect, in relationship to the mating surface on the straight gear surface of your countershaft. It's close, but you'll end up runing your new -58 gear and the countershaft gear over time.
I did the same thing, I need to send my gear back to the place I where I bought it. Ugh, now I get to pay for shipping again!
If you need that gear, Jack has a ton of them in his garage.
Do a search on O'brian gears for his shop number.
Cheers,
;)
wolfthing 2000 09-05-2002, 08:46 PM I tryed to e-mail Nutter on this subject but a failure on his end prevented the e-mail from going through. I have been going over and researching the mod now for about 6 months and now that I am almost ready to button things back up I find out that Nutter posted the wrong gear number................
I did the search for O'Brian Gears but I still haven't found a phone number.
This whole thing sucks...... BUT at least I found out in time. Thank you!!!!!
Dave
iscout62 09-05-2002, 10:54 PM This is from a p4x4 search. The number looks good. I misspelled the last name, it's O'brien.
