Needle Bearing U-Joints (http://www.hotrodssuperstore.com/needbearunjo.html)
Just measure what ya got, count the splines, and order the fawker!!! Or if you're lazy, you can get the whole steering shaft from that site...
Good Luck Retard!!!
seapotato 08-30-2002, 08:45 PM heyman,
when I started my ps conversion, I went to a wrecker, and got a ps box, that had the same casting number as everyone gets and turned slightly less than 4 turns. was 3.8 or something
anyways, this thing came off a jeep truck (shoulda known better) and the input splines were fawking weird.
went to the local spicer dealer and he couldn' t match them . in the entire catalogue nothing fit. (and he was a pretty good guy, ordered a couple he thought would fit)
was a total pain in the ass and I spent close to two weeks fuckin around trying to get somethng to fit and had no luck.
it was cheap at a napa for a new one tho, with that piece of shit as a core, so in the end I just did that.
told him the one I had was for a 68 impala, and had him order me another. now everything fits that's supposed to.
(didn't try the needle bearing thing tho, but with the luck I had I thought about it, but didn't want something to show up at my door that didn't fit, and have to send it halfway across the planet to return it.)
good luck
cheers
ryan
texican 08-30-2002, 08:55 PM Do you know the origin of this box?
Does it have 4 mounting holes?
The only time I ran into this was on a 4 bolt box I picked up at wrecking yard, off the car, no p[itman arm, and the SOB turn the pitman arm the wrong direction, did not find out until it was mounted........talk about strange, you turn wheel to the right and the wheels went left, it had a different spline count than the ones I normally use. Turns out it was off of a GM car that mounted the steering box behind the wheels up against the firewall, so the pitman arm originally faced forward. like a Scout box.
Butch
Hey man what's up? I'ts been a while since I messed on this subject, but I think most of the boxes were 30 or 36 spl. Do you know what it came off of? As far as joints/couplers and shafts, I think I saw some in my Summit catalog the other day. Also check Downey-same steering conv crap as A/A, but cheaper. Oh, and check the race car supliers.
Later
Looks like everybody else answered up on the splilne count so I'm just going to give you a couple of my thoughts and go away.
1. Unless all you are going to do is wheel you rig, get a different box. Nothing sucks worse than having to get used to the go-kart feel while driving down the road.
2. If you plan on putting tires over 29" on your Cruiser, get a different box. I have had my 3 turn on through stock height with 31" AT, to 4" lift with 35" MT, to 37"Boggers and the wandering never really changed much at all. It was just horrible all the way through.
3. If you will have anybody else driving your Cruiser, get a different box. Nobody will drive mine because it scares the crap out of them. I've even gone to shops where they will only be a passenger for test rides. My wife won't even think of doing more than moving it around in my driveway.
The closer turning radius is not worth it. I have driven 2 other Cruisers set-up just like mine and each one had a 4 turn box and it was much more relaxing to drive.
I wouldn't give it long until just like me you get tired of always having to adjust left, then right, then again, it sucks. Going at any speed over 35 on a street with any grooves is just freakin nuts!
I have had mine for 11 years and I can drive it with one hand and correct pretty much without thinking but it would be nice to be able to have someone else drive once in a while. Why have I not ever changed it you ask? It's a pain in the a$$ and I never seem to feel like changing the fawker. Get a different box so you don't have to worry about doing all the work over again.
If I didn't say it enough------
GET A 4 TURN BOX AND LEAVE THE INSANE TURNING TO GO-KARTS.

Hey, you sent me an e-mail last week about this and I responded asking you a few more questions and now you post it here. Did you even get my e-mail?
Check out borgeson.com for your steering shaft sizes.
By looking at your pics, you have a 30 spline input shaft if I counted righe. So now you need to measure the OD of the splines. It should be either 3/4" or 13/16". Now, which is it and then we can help. :)
SpaceGhost 08-31-2002, 09:00 AM Don't ignor Joey's comments. I know people who have used the 3 turn boxes. Unfortunately, most are in denial, only telling you they work great. Same guys think their Webers are the shit!
30 spline 3/4" is a common size. U joints are available at Napa, and I believe the correct part # is on this site in the tech section. The other end will be 3/4 for use with a piece of rod. You will have to broach it for a wood ruff key, or weld this end to the rod. Either way will work, but if you weld it, don't bake the seals or grease out of the u joint.
I wheel mine pretty hard and without some type of slip joint or collapsible steering shaft it would rip the u joint loose from one end. The body mounts will flex, as will the frame, so I am glad I bought the collapsible shaft even though it was way overpriced!
I also kept my big steering wheel from the 68. My buddies give me crap all the time, but it has a great wheeling feel. What do they know :flipoff2:
EricFJ40 08-31-2002, 09:32 AM It's funny, I always hear people badmoutht the 3 turn boxes. I had one that I ran for years and loved it. I had none of the scary handling traits others mention. It was great going down the road, you didn't have to move the wheel much at all to make turns. It was also nice for running high speed in the snow, where you are constantly making steering corrections to stay in a striaght line. I'm running a 4 turn box now because I couldn't find another good 3 turn.
To answer the original question, I would check with Borgeson, as others have mentioned. As for a slip shaft, I made my own out of two pieces of square tube, 1x1x.120 and 3/4x3/4x.095. They're a good tight fit and have held up to some serious strain.
goldenarrow 08-31-2002, 10:39 AM I hate to say it but go get a stering shaft out of a heep cheroke the botom ujoint fits onto the box and there is a colapteable/slip joint in it the top Joint is for a chey tilt collom inside a chevy collim is also a colapsable shaft thing that I used to lenghtin my stearing shaft
the gur that hated his three turn box soungs like me with my 4 turn box before i put a hevvy duty rancho stearin stabliser on mine if he already had one maby he needed a dual stabliser on it
how could you drive safely with a huge stearing wheel i had a 15" wheel and was scares to deth to drive it it just turend way to easy I had to move down to a 13 in wheel
FIXXXXAH 08-31-2002, 10:57 AM ELF: FAWK YOU

I made up some plugs that fit inside the square tube that left a 3/4" round nub sticking out. The yokes fit onto that nub and were welded on. The Borgeson yokes are steel so welding them is not an issue.
