I have an 83 Scrambler and am looking for something as more of a camping/wheeling/trail vehicle rather than hard core wheeling at this point but In the future I might want to build it up for more of a hearty wheeler..

I want to drive to the site, get out in the woods, camp in the deep woods, and drive home.

What are the best years and models for a doner vehicle?

Thanks in advance,

This is going to get moved however:
1996

Old body style = surplus of parts
OBD2 - nice to diagnose
Sealed tail cone Tcase... for the none hardcore wheeler... it's great if you pretzel a rear drive shaft no coffee cups to seal the atf pissing out of the tcase

97-99 are also great drivetrain wise however harder to find body parts, at least for me... none in the yards up here... but everything is pretty much identical to a +96

29 spline 8.25 is a decent axle for the 33" weekend warrior as well (96 and up)

Why a 99? What makes them better than the rest?

tks

98-99 gets my vote. best axles and motor.

By far the 99, best axle and drivetrain combos. Find one with a np231 tcase also. The np242 is also fine but is harder to get parts for.

I like the body better then the old one, plus its what i have

Picked this up from Wikipedia:

In the middle of the 1999 model year, vehicles with the 4.0 liter engine received a much improved intake manifold.

How do you know which has the improvements?

and

What's wrong with 2001? Did they stop putting in good transfer cases and axles after 1999?

tks

For the 99 model year, the intake manifold was improved.

For 2000 and 2001, they switched it to a distributorless ignition.

Thanks Slick,

It says in the middle of 99 the intake manifold was improved. How would you be able to identify which is which on a 99 model?

thanks,

also a few of 2000s have a crappy head that if not watched closely often result in a blown motor.

-the 2000+ have coil on plug.
-pre 96 have fiberglass rear hatches.
-pre 96 have more interior room.
-be wary of pre 96s with VATS, (vehicle anti theft system) its buggy.

personally (iv had 2 99s, 1 91, 1 94, 1 88, 1 89) i would stay away from the 2000+ because of the head issues and like mentioned before the lp30. really anything from 90-99 with a 4.0 is good. the 99 has a better intake, but really you can get that intake cheap on ebay and it works even better on older cherokees. the pre 96 have more leg room, which for me is a big plus.

99 for me. Last year of hp30, you can get a 29spl. 8.25 and they look nicer. 00-01 had an issue with the heads cracking. Not a huge problem but it does happen.
