: tire question
mud junky 04-01-2009, 02:47 PM iv seen people put boggers on the rear end of there mud rigs, and less aggressive tires on the front. i wanted to do this so i bought 2 35x10.50/15 boggers for the rear end. and found out that 35x12.50R15 BFG muds had the exact same tire hight of 34.8" and the same tread with of 9.8". i was gearing up to buy the BFG's for the front when a friend told me that because of the extream difference in aggressiveness that i would mess up my transfer case if i did this. dose he know what he's talking about, or is he talking out his a$$?
Proeliator 04-01-2009, 02:51 PM Just because we have a mud forum now, does not mean that retarded questions like this should not be posted in the newbie section.
He doesn't know what he's talking about. Personally, I would choose a more aggressive tread for performance reasons (I run Q78 TSL's on the front & 35X10.50 Boggers on the back which are NOT all the same size), but in no way would your t-case be hurt because tires of unequal performance, but equal diameter are installed.
mustange70 04-02-2009, 08:13 PM People run less agressive tires on the front to avoid snapping front axle parts.

For steering.
Midget28 04-02-2009, 08:57 PM lol Id hate to say this but Ive always wondered the same thing but never would ask.

I beg to differ, then again its the trend in this area, as keeping aggressive tires in the front steers the rig much better when steering for traction as the front gets the traction first and not the rear in the bogs.
I also know of a number of jeep guys running the stock d30's (aside from gears) running35x14 boggers had issues with snapping axles (dana 30 coments aside . .) running them the proper direction, they've sinced swapped tires around and are running them backwards, now not so many issues with broken axles.
# of reasons for running less aggressive tires up front. In my case, the Q78 TSL's tend not to dig for China the way Boggers do when you lose momentum in the deep stuff. Most of the guys I know who are worried about frontend parts are running SMALLER front tires, but not necessarily less aggressive (44" boggers in back with 38.5X11.50's up front in deep stuff, or 34X9.50's on mud drag trucks).

Train Horn 04-04-2009, 09:19 AM On our mud drag truck we run 38/11/50/15 ford 9" rear, 44 front and have never broke nothing
rear 39,5 jimmy jean cuts
mud bog truck chevy 10 bolt( alloy axle's ) 39,5 on 10 inch rims front
39.5 15in rims rear ( super swamper boggers always )
broke axles constantly ..........took out front locker problem solved for now !!!
but steering has been a issue !!!!!!

to answer your question, no it will not mess up your transfer case. with a less aggressive tire in the front there is less load on the transfer case, because you don't have the traction to create the load. the rear output normally is direct drive so there is no gears or a chain to bind in the transfer case, but the front output is driven through gears or a chain.
I am also not a fan of miss matched gears or different tire sizes because you end up immediately causing a loss of traction because you have tires turning at two different speeds. does it work, yes. is it a good idea, some say yes some say no. .02

I ran 35x10.50 boggers on the rear and Q78-16 tsls on the front of my mud truck for 5 years and never had any problems with the tcase... aside from saving front axle parts it also served to overdrive the front end a little because the Q78s were about 35.7 inches mounted and the boggers were about 33.8 inches mounted and i was running 4.10 gears front and rear...

BubbaZ71Tahoe 04-14-2009, 01:42 AM i'd definitely go with a tsl in the front rather than a bfg lol
but why not run boggers all the way around?
I run 38.5 boggers and have not broke any front ifs parts... the 10bolt rear is a different story though..

TEX Do you know the math equation to do this? I am running 2 different sets and thought about just runnin larger rear tires instead of swapping gears. Front tires are 33" with a 3:54 gear and rear gears are 4:10s so what size rear tires do I need?
