: Waggy 44 front hubs Q's
YEOW! 08-30-2002, 09:02 PM Hey there!
I found a 1987 front Waggy 44 wihtout vaccum disconnect for my 2000 TJ.
It has some rust on rotors, ball joints is in good shape, axleshafts and kunckles too.
I will get new rotors, pads and capliers for it.
Can i just get all parts (above) from NAPA and bolt on and will 6 on 5.5 fit 15x8" rims w/ no problem even with all napa parts?
One thing i was NOT sure is hubs...this one doesnt have manual hubs, so can i swap it to manual hubs 30 splines by Warn ?
Any advice/tips will be great helpful also help me find store or online to order few parts too.
thanks!
YEOOWW!!
Rob Kosinski 08-31-2002, 10:04 AM Yep . I rebuilt the majority of my waggy 44 axle with parts from NAPA. The warn hubs will work no problem. The front you have used slugs, the same as a full time hub. I had good luck using napa online and then going into the store to tell the what I needed. Rebuilt calipers are around $15-20 and the rotors should be fairly cheap. My bud has a brand new set of warn inners for that axle if you are going CTMS. The Spicer ball joints ran me $125 for all four from napa. Its a great axle. RK
Dust Puppy 08-31-2002, 10:05 AM jake.....
go for it man. thats the same axle i ran upfront for a while. as far as the manual hubs just get a set of warn premium hubs for them i think mine cost me like 60 bucks. i can get you the part number if you want i have the box around here somewhere.
the best part of the waggy setup is you do get bigger brakes. anything is better then the stock tj setup.
drop me an email if you need anything i can hook you up with pics of everything

YEOW! 08-31-2002, 10:58 AM Man, you all are great helpful!!
Bummer, i was going to pick it up but they all closed :( !!
I ll pick it up during the weekday!
I ll go to NAPA cuz its only 5 mins from my home!
bigger brake up front - whoo hoo!!
If i buy brake stuff like capliers etc from NAPA, is it the same as Waggy capliers etc that already on it?
I saw one of em, the brake system need to go and replace all new parts...
Thanks!
YEOW!
Anything you buy from NAPA is going to be the same as a factory part. How would things fit together if they were different?
BTW, the outer shaft on a 44 is not 30 splines, it is 19 (except Scouts). The inner shaft is 30 where it slides into the carrier.
YEOW! 08-31-2002, 11:12 AM Ok, how can I find outer shaft 30 splines to swap from 19 splines to 30 splines ? Can I swap new Warn hubs w/ 30 splines or ?
Thanks!
YEOW!

I'd like the part number for the warn premiums.
thanks
H8monday 08-31-2002, 10:23 PM I like NAPA as much as the next guy, especialy considering they are one of my Sponsors. But they have to special order Spicer Ball Joints, which are the only ball joints I will run in a D44. If they will not order the Spicers for you, then the Moog (HD/fleet duty) ball joints would be my next choice.
Jason R 08-31-2002, 11:54 PM Hey man hows that 44 holdin up behind that 302?

Everything except for the Warn hubs, have held up great.
There has been some breakage, but I have been really hard on the rig. I am confident enough with the 44, that I have put the D60 swap on the back burner.
Jason R 09-01-2002, 01:31 AM Yea how easy are you on the go pedal. Buddy of mine said you werent THAT easy... :D
YEOW! 09-01-2002, 08:30 AM Thanks :) !!
H8monday,
Is your front 44 w/ outers 19 splines ?
Thanks!
YEOW!
Yeow all 44's except Scouts are 19 spline outers. Warn does not make a 30 spline outer or hub for the 44. The 30 spline outers are for XJ's and YJ's when you buy their upgrade kits. The 19 spline outers are still larger and stronger than those 30 spline "kit" outers. If I remember correctly H8 is running forged axleshafts along with CTM ujoints. Stick with the stock parts for now and see if you have breakage problems. I have a stock 44 with a 401 powering it on 38" TSL's. As long as I take it easy on the loud pedal I haven't had a lot of breakage.

I agree that he should run the stock shafts (rebuilt with new 760x joints), untill he has problems,...but.
Its not the throttle pedal that tears apart front U joints, its tight turns while climbing, undercut rocks at the front tires, nose down turns and transitions, and cutting brake turns.
I get tired of hearing that if you stay out of the throttle you can keep a D44 alive. Hell I can mash the pedal all day long, and as long as the tires are breaking loose, nothing will ever break. Going hard on the throttle is much more likely to tear up the rear axle durring a hard climb when all of the weight is on the rear. Turning under heavy load is what tears up the front Joints, so its safer to say, if you are willing to back up a lot and try and maintain straight runs at all tough obstacles you should be OK with the stock axles and joints. If you try and do a hard inside wheel climb, on a steep obstacle, you can pop that joint while your ideling.
Very true Jeff. The times that I have had a joint pop was when the wheel was cranked and it didn't take much to let it go. Luckily things were moving so slow that I never have torn up the ears on the axleshaft.
YEOW! 09-02-2002, 11:45 AM I will stick with 19 splines!!
Are you saying that Waggy front 44 axleshafts come with X760 u joints? I thought its all X297 ??
Thanks!
YEOW!
The 760x is the new ujoint from Spicer which replaces the 297x. Same size. You're probably thinking of the 260x found in CJ Dana 30s.

OOO purple diff covers!! Saweet. Is that custom jobbie thingy ma bob?? :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Sundowner 09-04-2002, 04:01 AM Warn does not make a 30 spline outer or hub for the 44.
that's not exactly true.
you can use the Warn hubs for the FF kit, and they are half ton dana 44 hubs with 30 splines.
the counterpoint is that the 30 spline hubs cost twice as much as 19 spline hubs

But do they have a axleshaft which works with that hub for a 44? Not as a production item. There's more expense for a custom outer shaft that's no bigger diameter than the 19 spline variety. Besides, it's usually the u-joints that go first.
Sundowner 09-04-2002, 09:44 AM no argument, whatsoever.
but the option is out there.
