Hi there i am new to Pirate and am looking for some tips. i have a 72 fj40 with a SBC 350 passed down from my dad. my truck still has the 3 speed trans. my dad has an 87 fj60 that is broke down in the pasture. he just gave me permission to pull the 4 speed trans and put it in mine. i am not stranger to a wrench and up to the challenge. i would like some tips or if anybody knows of a link for DIY i would appreciate it. i have no desire to rebuild 60 in fact when my son grows up i plan on him driving it. family tradition type of thing. any advise will be greatly appreciated.

you'll need a few items to complete the swap:
bell housing; advance adapters sells an aluminum housing that will work great for this setup.
transmission x-member. try to modify the fj60 unit to work in the 40. it'll be the easiest way to get the job done.
clutch; make sure you check out the one in the 40 right now, it might need to be replaced and this is the time to do it.
the clutch hydraulics will work.
fwiw, use the 60 series t-case as well. you'll have to have the drive-shafts modified. the best way to handle this is to use the fj60 drivelines and have them shortened. make sure the pinion flanges will work though, you'll most-likely have to use the old driveline ends from the 40 to get them to mate up.
also, if you don't have disc brakes on the 40 yet, then use the ones from the 60. it's a fairly simple swap. a knuckle rebuild kit would be a good idea when doing this conversion.
last but not least, you could graft the fj60 power steering into the 40 with some mods and simple fab work.
looks like your 40 just got lucky! :smokin:

i sure appreciate your response. that sure is helpful. what about the splines on the clutch and the trans will they match or should i find another way around that. actually i was going to do another post for the power steering you read my mind. do you think the P/S should cross over? minus the pump (on account of the GM block) i did the disk brakes approx. 2+ yrs ago and am very happy with it. thanks again for your input.

Georg didn't pimp himself, but I'll do it for him. If you need an adapter between that 350 and the fj60 4 speed, PM him on here. He has great prices and if you didn't catch it, he gives great service. If you have any questions, he's got your answers...
your power steering hose will work between the 60 steering box and the pump on the 350.
