i just put a crate 350 in my runner. how much valve tick iks too much. i thought the hydraulic lifters corrected that rocker noise. i don't want to crank down on the rockers if i don't have to. i might just have low valve covers right??????

no, did the rockerarms, lifters come preloaded/pre adujsted.

if they werent you will get a tick, if it starts to skip abeat you have successfully flattend you cam.

did you swap the covers out for some thing else? did you swap the rocker arms out for rollers?

a rocker knock is really prevalent and you would here all of them not just one or two.

Don't mistake an exhaust leak for a ticking valve.

header/manifold gaskets and collector gaskets can all be suspect.

Now, if for some reason you have a collapsed lifter, that would make a clatter. Motor new or used?

the motor was built by some one locally. it definetly is a valvetrain noise, but the motor runs fine. it kinda sounds like diesel, haha tickticktick!
i have about 100 miles on this motor. should i do a valve lash adjustment or what?????

the builder installed an extreme 4x4 cam from comp cams, he said he put z28 valve springs in for added performance.?. does that sound right???
i have a set of stocker summit valve covers. my heads are Truck heads with stock rockers. are they hitting the valve covers.

Pull the valve cover off it there is signs of them hitting then you need taller ones, but I doubt thats the case

the only way they are hitting is if he installed a rollers or a cam so tall that it would rip the rocker stud out and bend the rockers up.

I am struggling here. when i drive down the road the engine is very loud. i guess i should replace my header gaskets, but i dont feel any leakage around there!!!

when youi take them off look for black "spray" out the corners of the gaskets.

also check the collector flange gaskets.

my collectors were a problem. i did have to rework the flange surfaces to get a good seal. i will have to wait till i run to the parts store to replace my header gaskets. do truck heads have square or round exsaust ports.

thanks for the sdvice. it still sounds like a valve train noise though!!!!

I've had an old 350 that the PO had installed the valve covers backwords, and it was quite noticable that the rockers were hitting the cover. Even without taking it off. Something about a rocker arm hitting rubbing on stamped steel over and over that eventually makes a hole that oil sprays out.
