: Can I weld onto this Pitman Arm?
Hollywood1 04-04-2009, 05:03 PM Not sure what its off of, but is this cast or forged? I'd like to know if i can weld onto this pitman arm. The previous guy who worked on this truck didn't do a very good setup with the hydraulic assist. I'd like to make a drop pitman arm with a double shear on the end for a Heim Joint. Basically, I'd cut the arm and fab a new one using just the end that sleeves the threaded shaft.
Hollywood1 04-04-2009, 05:05 PM Can't seem to find a tab or Manage Attachments to add pics.
JeepsRcool 04-04-2009, 05:12 PM You have to buy a red star to use pirate to host pics, you can use photobucket other wise.
You can cut off the splined end and fab the arm, i have done this before, i used my mig and burned it in as hot as it would go. When Going this rout i like to make the arm wrap completely around the splined section, so it is basically in side the arm not just welded on to the end. :D
Good luck

I have done the same thing mant times without a failure yet. The only difference is that I TIG weld mine, mainly because I have a machine. But a hot MIG done right will give same results.
Red Chevy 04-04-2009, 05:19 PM Yes u can weld it, as stated above wrapping the arm around the splines would be the strongest. I have made a couple of pitman arms, but I just bevelled ??(no spell check):flipoff2: both sides real good and burned it in with a 7018 rod. Also made a steering knuckle on a D44 like this using a pitman arm on the knuckle, burned it in real hot and braced it some. Held up real well with mostly mud and a lot of street time under a extended cab chevy on 42's.
Hollywood1 04-04-2009, 06:42 PM Thanks, Sorry about the no pics. I'll have to buy myself a a star. The arm i have is not a dropped arm its just straight with maybe a 1/2 drop. I was thinking of doing what you guys said by cuting and then wrapping the splined section and double welding around the wrap. I was told that it is cast so i didn't want to hassle with it on my 220 Mig. But maybe i'll give it a try. Or can't i just use a stock pitman arm and do the same thing? Thanks.
Wheres the Red Star Link?

you can use the stock pitman arm, just be sure to get lots of penetration and put the weld all the way around it.. as said before, its okie, but it works. I wouldnt use the idea on a street truck, but offroad i would.
florida4x4 04-05-2009, 11:20 AM Weld it, burn it as hot as possible but don't try to get fancy cooling it in a special way. let it cool naturally

I left mine on the top of a hot wood stove overnight and let the fire go out...
Hollywood1 04-05-2009, 12:40 PM Thanks for the link.
The truck has Hydro assist and is going to be green sticker only. Thanks for the tips guys. I'll post pics if i do the project and after i get my Red star.
