I have a 78 fj-40 with all the stock drivetrain in it still SOA and everything, but want to put mini truck yota axles in it for the width will they adapt up to a cruiser t-case or do I need a pickup t-case as well?

that's a step in the wrong direction. mini axles utilize smaller diffs. if you want to go wider, then either run fj60 or fj62 axles or bolt on some wheel spacers.

will fj 60 axles adapt right up to a fj40 t-case or do i need a different style yoke

the flange bolt pattern should be the same but you'll have to "outboar" the front spring hangers to make up for the extra 3" in width between the fj6x series perches. the rear is easier, just cut the perches off the fj6x housing and weld new ones inplace to match the spring width of the fj40. a lot less work.
you can buy the parts for the swap from dan at roughstuffindustries aka gravelmaker on here.

I second Georg on the FJ60 axle swap for your situation. Keep in mind tho that the 60 is gonna have the taller 3.70 differentials, so you'll want to swap your thirds over to the other axles.

Also second using RuffStuff hangers. They are overbuilt, just like they should be. I put a couple of them on my 40, and they put the OE components to shame.

I know I am probably going to get blown up for this but here goes anyway.

I had a 85 four runner I built up and wheeled for a few years. The wife wrecked it on the interstate a couple of winters ago. Bent the frame etc. I pulled the axles engine tranny and t/case out of it and got rid of the rest.

I had a 72 FJ 40 sitting in the shop that had a good frame no motor tranny or t/case and the tub was completely rusted and gone.

I bought a Aquala aluminum tub and cowl for it swapped the mini truck axles in SOA with flipped springs. I ran the W56 and single 4.7 case for about a whole summer till I could find the motor I wanted. I finally found the 3RZ and put it in. I am running a trent fab hood and aluminum bib. I am running a FJ 60 box high steer. I also dumped the hard top and doors for soft top and doors.

Overall I am happy with it. I am only running 36in IROKs on it. I wheel in the NW so rocks are not as plentiful as down in cali. The best thing I did was to dump the 22RE and install the 3RZ. I tried to get the weight down as low as I could and still drive it daily if needed, like when diesel hits 5$ per gallon. It is no "powerhouse" but it wheels good and makes me happy so in the end that is what matters to me.

TUFF - I don't think there is anything wrong with using a rolled 4runner and putting the components into the fj40. You ended up lightening up the fj40 quite a bit as well....

That is a whole lot different than wanting wider axles and putting minitruck axles underneath.

fj60 axles or if you truely want wide, go one tons.

one tons are too big to still drive on the streets because i still like to drive to the trails sometimes

why not just run some 2" backspaced wheels?

Yeah I figured when i built it I would try to make it as light as possible so the 4cyl could pull it around. I had already sunk a lot of money in making the mini axles stronger with longfields gears arb's etc so why not use them.

The 22RE was not happy with being in the cruiser so that is the main reason I went to the 3RZ. I kind of wish I would have went with the 3.3 cummins instead of gas but oh well it gets me wheeling.
