Even as safe as we all try and be, wheeling can be a dangerious sport.

I was just wondering, approx. how many people die in wheeling
mishaps each year.

Is there a place where the names are posted in memoral.

Pismo Beach and Glamis both have atleast one death a year each.

We saw 2 memorials at the base of Lion's Back in Moab last week. Someone said a Four Runner went over the side going down the back side. Apparently that is the second Four Runner to do that in the last 3 years or so (hear say)...

Nick Campbell mentioned the other night in chat that his father was doing great.

The silver lake sand dunes in Michigan also have at least one death a year. Almost always from some guy jumping an extremely steep hill and landing upside down. Or a fourwheeler getting 100 feet of air.

yeah at silver lake sand dunes in michigan there is an average of at least one or two on either memorial or 4th of july weekends. this year a dirtbike jumped a big dune and landed in the bed of a truck. my buddy saw it happen. bad stuff. he never moved and heard the next day that he died.

Sounds like a good Idea. Maybe a section for fellow fallen 4wheelers needs to be started.

I was on the back side of Lion's Back a week after the first 4 Runner went over the side maybe 6 or so years ago. Moab is kind of an addrenaline rush because of the exposure and the back side of Lion's back is no exception. We ( my bro hefe and I) had heard of the teenagers that had died the week previously on the back side of lion's back from the locals. There is one section on the back side that all though not that tough, is VERY exposed. It has a narrow corridor that off cambers, towards a 150 ft. vertical cliff.
When we got to this section, it was obvious that this is where the Four Runner went over the side because there was broken glass on the trail from the smashed windshield where it rolled once, then rolled again this time over the cliff and with it, the teens to there death. It was extremely hard to get myself to drive down this section. I just froze up, looking at the broken glass and thinking what it must feel like to free-fall in a rig... 150ft! :skull:

There is a bypass, and you can just decide not to go there. And, there are places all over Moab (and many other cool wheeling spots) where the truly stupid (or unlucky) can get into serious trouble. I still have a nice ridge in the center of my driver's seat from one section on Rusty Nail (just past "no left turn"). Off camber looking over the edge of a 100'+ drop to a stone floor provides some serious adrenaline rush. The off camber is no where near rolling most rigs but, too much gas, top heavy, bad suspension with low roll center, break the wrong piece, etc. and OOPS! Should they shut that down too? If not, where do you draw the line? Who decides? Put down that sharp knife, you might cut yourself… What we really need is more people to protect us from ourselves and remove all personal responsibility or decision...

what about that guy in colorado who was wheeling by himself with his dog, think it was last summer. rig flipped over backwards and the rig self destrusted rolling back down a steep hill.

there was a guy here in Alabama, I think somewhere around Gardendale, who was killed a few years ago. I heard it was a steep climb, lots of go pedal and the front driveshaft let go and the rig went over backwards and the drivers side of the cage took a big rock and the driver hit his head on the cage and it killed him passenger got out without a scratch. definitely needed a helmet ...

We had a guy out hunting a couple of years ago going after his deer in his jeep. It seems he was trying to winch up a slimy hill and somehow got between his vehicle and the ground. The worst part is he was drinking and that was what the local news focused on.

A club up in northern VT had someone die a few years ago when the truck she was a passenger in ripped the bumper off another truck trying to pull it out - the bumper came through the windshield and killed her.

I met a guy a couple months ago who was driving a Jeep and rolled it. One of his passengers was either not buckled in, or just had a lap belt and hit their head on the cage and also got pinned.

Most things that are fun can be deadly. No reason to stop doing them, just be aware and learn as much as you can from the mistakes of others.

We had a guy on the east side of the state(near rocky saddle on manashtash) who after winching down a hill(very steep) decided he could back down it, it did a barrel roll, and he died from head tramma after hitting his head on the CB on the roll cage..

And there was guy killed about a year agao up at reiter trails after his jeep flopped over back, he didn't have his belt on and was crushed by his cage...

Looks to me like all those that died were either doing something follish(not checking where they would go when jumping dunes) or forgetting safety first(no seat belt) or maybe drinking while driving(winched vehicle over himself).......these accidents can be avoided.....
the girl killed by the flying bumper could have been avoided as well.....get out the the vehicle winching or being winched, unless it is impossible to do so, make sure you are winching against a solid part(most bumpers on NOT solid-like a frame).....
Not saying all accidents could be avoided, but most can simply by taking the time to enjoy this sport safely....

The one on Real TV was a Blazer and everyone lived, but were banged up. Came down real fast and looked like it was going to go off the side a couple of times, but got within 40-50 feet of the bottom before going off nose first.

We had one here in town a couple of months back, right near my house also. This is a place next to a home improvement store where we used to ride. Has a 40 ft. hole with routes on both sides. One side has a nice rock face to climb. Some people were out playing on it and got high centered. A girl with them got out to see how bad the stuck was and thought the guy could gas it and go. Well when he did, the vehicle rolled to the left and both it and the girl went off the cliff with the vehicle landing on her. Turned out they were all drunk also.

Snoborder....you are right, there was one w/ a blazer that crashed on the way down when the wife took a shot at it....but, there was another one I remember they said it was a runner and it landed inbetween the rock faces to the right...the blazer nose-dived to the left....
