I wanna install an AutoMeter tranny temp gauge in my FJ62. Trying to decide on electrical vs mechanical style. But where and how should I install the sender? I was thinking the pan was the best place to get a fluid temp. Can I drill a hole in the pan and weld a bung on, then screw the sender in there?
Any tips or experience very welcome. Thanks.

I prefer Mechanical gauges. Mount the sender in the tranny pan.
I mounted mine in the fluid return line from the tranny cooler. The B&M kit includes an electrical resistance sender that you can easily plumb into the line.
If your return fluid is hot than you know things aren't good.

I have the B&M trans temp guage and it goes in the return like. Mine is a bit troublesome and I hear that they tend to be that way from other people that run them. Would be interested in hearing if the Autometer one is more reliable.

I disagree with putting the sender in the return line. If the fluid is hot in the return line, then it is alot hotter in the tranny. I would want to know how hot the fluid is in the tranny pan. Just my 2 cents.

When I was running the Toy auto in my 4Runner I used a VDO guage with a sensor in both the out and in lines. They were both wired to a two way switch, which meant I could monitor both temps via the same guage.
I also used this setup to test various trannie coolers and of those tested none were of any use. I finally got a significant temp difference by using a 18"x9" a/c condensor mounted above the spare wheel. It also had twin fans should the guage indicate excessive heat when slow wheeling, but I never had to use them.

If you are only looking at using one sensor then mount it in the out line as thats where the temp will be the hottest which is what you need to know.
Thanks for the info. If I were to put it on one of the lines, I would use the outlet line from the tranny. There is a factory sender already, right on the side of the tranny at the outlet fitting, but all it does is turn on a light.
Will call AutoMeter on Tuesday and see what they suggest, if they have an easy way to put the sender on the line.
