I remember seeing a post on the smog laws changing in California. Supposed next year all cars 1978 and below would become smog exempt. Is that true?

Last I heard it was something like 25 years or older, don't need it. I am shooting from the hip but a couple years ago I no longer needed to smog my 72.

I called DMV about this a few weeks ago. In 2004 they're supposed to go to the "30 year rule". Meaning that 74 and earlier would be exempt. Then 2005, 75 & prior, etc etc.

I tell you what, it is pretty nice not to have to deal with smog checks.

Hmm, I might be going insane. But it would be so nice to have an LT1 matched with an edelbrock fuel injection with NO SMOG EQUIPMENT!!! :) Anyways, hopefully God will zap the smog guys into making the law 25 years and older.

Q: When will my post-1974 model year vehicle become exempt from Smog Check?

A: 1974 and subsequent model year vehicles will be exempt from Smog Check when they turn 30 years old. Under current law, a 1974 model year vehicle will be exempt in 2003, a 1975 in 2004, etc.

Adam, do you have any better links on engine swaps than this from the Dept of Comsumer Affairs? I am looking for the cut and dry rules.
