Well I tried wrapping the exhaust down pipe and it just won't get hot enough for me. I wrapped 3/8" copper around the 2" pipe 25 times and it won't get much over 75-80 degrees so now I want to go the other way with it. How do you build one or is it cheaper(easier) to buy one?

Before or after the muffler, my exhaust temps are alot warmer but what it the source temp? Might try smaller tube and more wraps...and insulate it, I've seen where they wrapped a blanket to hold in the heat....
Good luck....

The down pipe between the manifold and the cat. no insulation but used about 10' of tube tightly wrapped to the pipe

you talkin for a hot camp shower?? if so think the other way, heres mine.
2" copper tube 12" long. 1/4" soft copper tubed spiralled (the more the better). place inside 2" get bell reducers for whatever size heater hose, mine is 5/8" so i reduced to 1/2"(remeber i.d.), drilled a hole in each bell for soft copper to stick out then soldered it all together, put inline in heater hose and walla. just add apropriate fittings to run water from source and to whatever you need warm water for.
if your talkin about something else just ignore me.

as usual no pics, just not a big picture taker, its got about 3ft of 1/4" tube in it and it gets pretty hot if the supply water is not way cold, its always been a comfortable shower temp and it makes good warm tea;)

I've seen several variants of the heat exchanger on this board.
Let me offer up one more suggestion I ran across not long ago.
Dodge Pickups (and probably any Cummins powered truck) uses a water powered oil cooler that with a little degreasing of the oil lines would make an excellent shower heater. It looks just like the ones ya'll are fabricating only this one has mounting brackets and fittings already attached. Probably can be had rather cheap at the wrecking yards.
I got one with a Cummins Motor I bought not long ago for my Motorhome conversion from gas to diesel. Thinking about putting the exchanger on my Rodeo as an extra doo-dad. (If you knew me that wouldn't surprise you) But with the Motorhome nearby who needs an open shower when I've got indoor facilities. For now I'm gonna hang on to it.
Anyway!
If anyone is interested I'll dig it out of the box shoot some pics and get a link to my photo albumn up for ya.
Just doing my part!
