Will birfields from a 79 - 85 4wd toyota truck fit an FJ40 housing? I have a '73 FJ40 but when I had the axle apart it has the fine spline birfields.

How about the axle shafts?

if you have drums the mini birf wont fit. even thought your fine spline on the inner, the outer (hub end) will be course. i dont know when the change was made from course innner to fine1970? but the hub end stayed course until disc, if you have disc then someone swapped previously, and then yes you can use mini birf's, but you may or may not have to grind slightly depending on weather the swap was mini or not.

oh and the shafts wont fit, well i think the short does but the long is actually longer on the mini. others will chime in with more details but i can get you going anyway;)

There was a disk brake conversion done when I got the cruizer. I believe it is mini truck parts (solid Rotors). When that is done are the mini's birfields used? If so I guess there are already mini birfields in my knuckles? Is this correct?

Here are a couple of links with info on the mini brake swap to help you understand what may or may not have been with your rig:

http://www.geocities.com/baja/dunes/6948/disc_brake_conv.html

http://www.yankeetoys.org/black900rr/Rotors.html

The first one is the complete swap, except I would exchange the parts listed on the second one for those in the first..... :)

76 to 78 birfield is 1/4 inch longer then 79 and newer cruisers. The mini truck birfs are the same as 79 and newer cruiser. Longfields and newfields are the same I.D. of the bell and require ccrinding on the inner of the axle housing near the king bearing to get the bigger birfs to clear. My 79 id the sama bolt pattern on the hysteer arm as mini but the housing needing grinding to clear the larger bells.

One of the problems with transition years in cruisers is that they are all different. My cruiser (dec 78) had the larger tank under the body tub, the parking brake on the dash, and everything from a mini fits on the steering knuckles. It was a complete slide in. However Gunmetal proves that a mini birf does not have to fit in a 79. I wish Toyota was more consistent...

If you have a mini disk conversion then you are already good to go. Newfields, longs, whatever you want will fit (read Bj's post on the longs before you buy the newfields though). Just ignore the cruiser birfs (mini is stronger anyway) and run with it. All of the grinding necessary will already have been done..
