: Alternator Welding

Yes I did a search already, I just have a few quick questions that I wasn't able to get an answer for. Has anybody put a second alternator in a 4.0 XJ? I am trying to figure out where I want to put this thing. Where the stock airbox was looks like a good canidate since it is right out in the open and I can have my makeshift control box next to it. Possibly use the PS pump and add a v belt pulley to that? Next to the AC pump looks good too, but I would like to avoid using that area since my York will be going there pretty soon. I was just looking for some input from others who had done this so I don't reinvent the wheel here. Also, I was going to go raid the junkyards and 4x4 swap meets this week.... Anybody know of a vehicle that came stock with a high output externally regulated alt? I was thinking of just looking for some Fords with lots of accessories (air, PW, PL, etc) but if someone knows of one off the top of their head that would be nice. Most of the PNP places around here pull the alts and put them on a shelf so you can't be too sure. Thanks

i have been planning on building one for my jeep. when i get done with getting this vortec running in my jeep i plan to build one. i plan to build a bracket off of one of my home built shock towers and i plan to weld a small v-belt pully to the alt pully on the 350. i havn't actually sat down and figured out my desgn yet but i will build a bracket that the alt goes on so it is a quick on and off job so i keep the alt in the tool box and only put it unde the hood when i welding job is needed. i want to use some sort of a ratchet type of tentioner so i crank it tight and the just release and remove. anyway for more info go to the tech page for the por home page. it outlines some parts and alt's to use.

Thanks for the tip. The tech section didn't have what I was looking for. Basically I am looking for a vehicle make/model that used a v belt, externally regulated alternator, and put out a hundred amps or more.

I went out and took a few measurements on my Jeep last night. It looks like I can weld a small extension shaft to the pulley on my power steering pump and then place a pulley over that shaft and weld it in place. I think that the trick here is finding a piece of rod that is going to have to be tapped into the little hole in the center of the pulley to ensure a direct center fit. I can hunt through the junkyards to find a v belt pulley that will be slightly smaller than the PS pump pulley, so as to turn the alt much faster...after I put a tiny pulley on the alt of course <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> The only problem that I can see with doing this is my aux electric fan. The fit is going to be EXTREMELY close, so I may need to trim just a bit of the useless plastic from the center, or find another electric fan that is slightly thinner. Any ideas?

I designed the bracket last night. It is somewhat hard to describe, but if you want a picture for your setup, e-mail me and I will scan and send a copy your way. It is going to be mounted to the flat portion of the fender where the air box once was. Two 3/16" plates will be used to sandwich it in place and hope that it doesn't tear the sheet metal. I seriously doubt that I will have problems with that though since the belt will only be on when the welder is in use. Its not like I am driving down the road all the time putting the stress of a revving motor on it.

I will be sure to take lots of pictures as this project progresses so that the other XJ guys can have a more specific guide to building their own. I guess the only real hitch right now will be finding the proper alternator for this. Crap, I really don't want to have to buy a new one. Sorry for the length of this post, details details details.

Look at some 70s luxu-mobiles. The more electrical gizmos the better.

I asked my brother about this, he was a plant engineer at Westling Manufacturing, which remans, starters and alts, her eare his thoughts....
Oggie's broI wouldn t put a second one on.
I would put a big single alternator on
If he wants externally regulated he should put on a 130A Ford Alternator
(ext reg)
off of a late 80's Taurus with a heated windshield.
That would be one hell of a kludge because the Ford is so much bigger then
the stock
Jeep alternator.
Another good one that would be easier to rig on their is a 200A CS144 (int
regulated and $$$) off of an ambulance
Even a another option is the ext regulated/rectified CS130's. You can buy
them but they are expensive. They have the rectifier mounted outside so the
heat is moved away from the unit. They would be somewhat reliable then.

Out

Just some more info for ya.

I've got a 4.0 in my YJ. Check out my site, maybe it'll help. The pics don't work right now. members.home.com/t.molnar (http://members.home.com/t.molnar)

Look at my install of a York and Zena welder into my 4.0 TJ.

Thanks for all of the links and input, it has caused me to restructure my designs a little bit. I will be adding a second alt just for welding, but on the other side of the engine. The battery is going to need to move to the location of the stock airbox and the second alt will more than likely be driven off of the existing alt using one of Brad Kilby's nifty serpentine/v pulleys. If I spare the bracket right I can get away with just buying one and still have it lined up. Now for the next big question...where in the heck am I going to put my York? Maybe I will just cut the Saden and use that... Anyway, thanks again for all of the help.

Mike-I did a search and went to Zena's website http://www.zena.net/ ....that is quite a mobile welder. Would like to hear your report about it when you get it all together.

The welder is all done and it is awsome! It's all that they say it is and more.Tons of power and real smooth.

I sell these now so if you guys want to do a group buy I can offer very very good prices also.

Don't know if the 89 was using v-belts or a serpentine, but if it was running a serpentine, you could use one of Kilby combo pulleys on your first alternator, and run a v-belt to your next alternator.
