: Longfields in Oz (long + pics)
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:27 PM
well i went pretty rough on the longfields, and admittedly, was still a little skeptical....but after seeing ruff, thrash them (but only on 33s) i just had to see for myself.....big thanks to jason for helping me out.....
they slide straight in like normal birfs, all the original stuff is retained, obviously.....they look a tiny bit different...... cause of the ring around the back....anyways, i got them in, and took them to landcruiser mountain park, for a big test
aired down, put the boggers on, locked it up and really started testing them, after driving around things, and getting stuck and driving up boulders and taking stupid lines, i wouldnt normally dream of  i finally got stuck, and started to throttle it, the wheels just started spinning, but it was pointless i was going nowhere, i am pretty confident i would have snapped a normal birf here, or before......... i backed up and took another line across, later i went across a rock field and tried to find some dodgy lines and "longfield tests"
finally i got myself caught, wedged into the ultimate hole, the only way out being up a ledge that was under cut and larger than my 38s by a fair bit, first attempt started to walk up, second attempt
it started spinning, so i thought, a few herbs would get me there, made sure both ARBs were engaged PTSHH PTSHH ;) i love that sound.....and got in on BOOST......after a few seconds BANG, very loud, i thought.....that was stupid, i blew a pinion, and my mates were saying longfield its blown a longfield........... i accelerated again, going nowhere, and they said the long side front was still turning.... damn it was a loud noise......
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:37 PM ok, admittedly, this looks stupid, but i wanted to see if they were good
and i give them my personal seal of approval, if you wheel a TOYOTA, with stock birfs get yourself some of these things TODAY!!!!!!!
longfield.com
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:45 PM now..i gotta figure out how to get my tricycle out of there (three wheel drive) being the sharp guy i am :emb4:  i didnt bring any tools, quoting "i'm not gunna go that hard, and besides, ive got the longs now...i wont break anything"
well......... famous last words, of a moron i guess....
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:52 PM well the photos, show how buried that drivers side swamper is.....it is full hidden, and underneath a large boulder........
thanks to adrian (boatlux) yes his hilux (minitruck) looks like a boat....... awesome thing, just point and shoot, fully armoured, double cases, 4.8s, high pinion, big block 3Y (2.0L 4 pot) broke a steering rod on the first day, which we welded back on, and the next day tore the top of his frame where the box mounts, and got it welded on trailside, by greg, jamie was there, and we used the battery from his jeep, gregs monster suzuki and adrians hilux, and got it sorted, with me falling asleep, i blew my power steering pump (i guess it doesnt like aired down boggers) ;)
luckily i brought 6 spare CVs with me (actually i pretty much forgot to take them out of the car) using the crossmember on the frame of the hilux we separated an axle, and installed, and got it going, wheeled it pretty hard again....
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:55 PM could not winch out of the hole, that is how bad it was.....
so we had to maneauvre it a bit more and get the rig out of the big hole to get a straighter pull and then try and winch out
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 03:59 PM from the looks of these pictures, we may as well have had steady eddie take the photos (big nev in the little HZJ-80)
here is some that i took:
the axle, next to an unbroken one, not the little piece, he just fell right out of the longfield....... (tapped it on the ground and that was it)
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:01 PM it was all a little more greasy (i cleaned it up for the photos) if anyones ever changed a CV, you know...its no the cleanest thing, but you cant beat the smell of grease and 90W
he sheared off right in the c-clip groove, and i dug around in the grease in the bottom of my knuckle and was rewarded with a c-clip in near perfect condition.....:flipoff2:
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:06 PM longfield...1
axle...0
 its still in perfect condition, barely a mark on it, its a little bit of surface rust, cause i didnt install it for a few days.....the ones in the back of my car look a lot worse full coating of surface rust...... ;)
one of my friends who is into drag racing inspected it before it went together (to see what my excitement was about) and remarked that he thought the heat treating was done really well!!
well......
this is the c-clip to leave off...the one that is missing, the groove is almost touching the edge of the longfield.......you DO NOT run this clip, but you do run the other 2 clips... clear fixxah? ;)
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:09 PM this is definitely a better way to go
i now have a FUSE, of sorts, that says, dont be soo stupid, and i got no metal filings in my hand, i didnt destroy all the inside of my steering knuckle, i didnt have to repack the birf, all round its simpler easier and faster to change tha a birf......and obviously a lot stronger!!
i know, you can glean all this from reading or searching....but im just STOKED by how good they are!! (this is me) ->:D :D
all the little bits in the birf change kit!!
Jason M 09-01-2002, 04:23 PM Awwwww a happy aussie ;)
Isn't it cute!!!!
:D
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:33 PM OH...and you can drive all day on the broken axle piece without doing any damage.....
you can change the CV (birfield) back at camp, on flat level ground on nice clean grass, instead of in a creek bed, knee deep in water at 10:30pm, or on the side of a mountain, or in the rain, late at night, on unlevel jackstands, with a vehicle, that look like it could topple onto you, cause you cant drive it anywhere to get it to a nice spot to jack from!!:p (ive done birfs in all those conditions) and its especially bad when you break the outer, and it all just locks up and makes a HUGE mess of the stub axle/hub/inner knuckle, birf and normally the axle!!
more pics of our UNREAL weekend!!
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:40 PM you can see how slippery the rocks would be there was a fair bit of water...pity it was all stagnant or we couldve gone for a swim!!
had some hairy steep uphill and downhill moments...thankfully they were very short.... (only as long as my wheelbase)
here is boatlux, making it look easy..... (getting lucky) ;)
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:46 PM CUTE??
ill give you CUTE :flipoff2: ;) :D (thanks dude)
not happy....STOKED
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:50 PM ok, we are fairly sure this has never been driven, unmarked rocks, plenty of untouched moss, and once we got in, we wondered which way was out...none of us had walked that far ahead..... but we got it sorted, with no winching until i broke the axle......
not how thin this little section is....no way out, just rubbing the tree and just rubbing the rock, quite a steep ledge and up and over.....no problems
Thanks for the great pics....but please hold still when you are taking them :smokin:
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 04:57 PM the offroad park we were in, has marked tracks and designated "hardcore areas" after finding one of the toughest marked on the map and running it with 33s and an open diff (jamie) and us picking the stupidest areas along the trail and trying to get it awwn, we got bored of the "CRUISER CANYON" and found our own area, which is where most of these shots are from, the later ones are from a place aptly called the "dinner hole" (or very nearby) also in a top secret location.... :D GOT ROCKS??? hehehehe
we also had a bit of fun watching these "mud junkies" 4WD club, drive a 60 series into the pig pen, and promptly stall the 2F, the water was flowing above the windows, and reminds me of why i havent been mud driving in AGES.....poor guy was wondering if he'd ever get out........ :D
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 05:00 PM the above one is reminiscent of that famous shot of zags changing his birf, while wedged on a rock
yeah the fuzzy shots  damn stupid fool, cant take a photo to save his life, and the video, he got heaps of footage of his feet, guts, trees and other things, sadly of two hours, not much of us actually driving anything :(
he WAS nice enough to tow my boggers behind his car, as the trailer wheelstands behind mine, being so tall...... but i took the clear photos, with the rest of them....i was trying to drive  i cant do everything ;)
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 05:09 PM the broken headlight, was us driving up highway to hell..... a few weeks back i had broken a CV and adrian was walking down the trail to put the wheelbrace back in his toolbox, when a rock moved underneath and he tripped, it went flying toward the vehicle and neatly took out his light :( i still feel bad about this, every time i see the one eyed thing winking at me
BUGGER!!
also the big dint in the passenger side guard was my fault as he was trying to tow me out of a stupid predicament i got myself into, this was on the day i first met him and before he had the side rails...... its a wonder he even still talks to me  :p
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 05:19 PM this is greg (with his waterbottle backpack) you can get pretty dehydrated with no roof..... and that thing works a treat, im testing out my new side rails....no that won't make good chop material......and my tyre is a little stuck but it drove right out of here!
id better stop.....otherwise ill hog all the PBB bandwidth.....and i dont want that (unless ive already stolen it all) :( apologies if i have
so cmawwn talk up!! or have the cats got all your tongues?
SpaceGhost 09-01-2002, 06:30 PM Welcome to the club, I broke both inners last weekend in the ProRock event at the same time! 8 total, since January. Changing the inners is much easier and faster, but the axle stubs don't always pop right out! Carry a spare birf with ya, unless you have a welder on board. Then take some long bolts to weld to the stub to aid in removal!
Did I see a red head aussie in those pics, hehehehe.
texican 09-01-2002, 07:01 PM Very cool, BJ, one thing though.....the fuzzy Pic's mess with me, I went and got my glass's, prior to reading they were fuzzy:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

WHY DOES BOBBY SAY NOT TO RUN THE MARTACK?

I didn't know he said that. You have to if you don't run the inner clip, (and have an open diff, and maybe an arb) which he specifically tells you not to install it (the clip). He also advises to run the outer clip, inside the hub body.
Clear as mud?
FIXXXXAH 09-01-2002, 07:37 PM YEH, ABOUT AS CLEAR AS MUD. SO YOU DO RUN THE MARTACK? AND WHY ARE THE STUBS SO HARD TO REMOVE? SHOULDNT THEY JUST SLIDE OUT?
MATT
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 07:45 PM yeah...a red head aussie...that is me, sometimes its blonde, but mostly red, GF, used to die it......but they come and go.... GP they sometimes call me (ginger pubes)!!
had and will have plenty of spare birfs, yeah we figured, if the splines had any marks on them, it'd be quite the effort to remove, for comps, i will finish on a stock birf, but just trailside, we will weld a bolt in and go that way!! very easy
martacks:
i was all ready to weld the axle, and found the clear line was RIGHT on the edge of the spline, my ARBs both have cross pins, and the seal is the furthest in point of the axle, i got lucky, and dont have to weld, which is unreal, my mate ruff had to weld his (minitruck front though) and his longs...
so a stock axle drops right into mine, no need to weld, each vehicle, and locker type will be different though.
i run the outer c-clip in the hub
i also run the axle clip that butts up to the back of the birf
i only removed that c-clip that is way inside the birf, he is a smaller one, and instead of being flat it has rounded edges, you won't know of this c-clip unless you have stripped a birf down, its wayyy on the inside, holds the axle in the birf.....thats the only one you dont need
(broke both at once) OUCH, you must've been wedged somewhere.....i was FLOGGING these things, and im stoked with them, plus im heavy and big, you should be lighter, (nice tube work) and 37" mtrs...........hardcore!!
i thought bobby actually recommended a martack? im not sure....
FIXXXXAH 09-01-2002, 07:54 PM OK, I GUESS I JUST GOT IT BACKWARDS, I WAS THINKING HE SAID NOT TO RUN A MARTACK AND TO USE THE C CLIP INSIDE THE BIRF, BUT ITS THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
WHICH MAKES SENCE, CAUSE IF YOU BROKE YOUR INNER LIKE YOU DID YOU WOULDNT BE ABLE TO GET THE STUB OUT BECAUSE OF THE INNER CLIP AND.....
MATT
BJ On Roids 09-01-2002, 08:08 PM fixxah, i have edited an earlier pic and you can clearly see the c-clip missing, its the one you leave off!!!
cheers
bj ;)

The splines tend to twist, and some of the longs are a tight fit on the axles to begin with. My very first break came right out when I popped it against a piece of plywood. All the others have required welding something to them and yanking them out. I bought extra longs for this reason, if I break an inner in a competition, I don't have time to get the stub out.
BJ covered the tack, and I am running an ARB without the tack, although I recall being advised that I should add it. All of the stock inners I have broken snapped pretty clean at the clip groove, the Dutchman twisted the splines outside the longfield then snapped off.
When I broke both of the inners I was clawing to get out the last gate on an obstacle. I was gettin it, and in retrospect, too hrd at that. The spring hangers were catching everything and the juice pedal was required to bang over the rocks. I hope to be solf=ving this problem with the current mods.
DCruiser138 09-02-2002, 03:45 PM man...you definatly got trigger happy with the camera!! sheesh! lol;)
LOL a 2 page thread and all the posts are from BJ :flipoff2:
NICK
helocat 09-04-2002, 08:17 AM BJ, Thanks for all the photos, I don't see what everyone is complaining about? I just shake the computer monitor and they are no longer fuzzy. (Shake the right way, go the wrong way and you will be looking at the last 9 beers you had)
It's great to hear more reports on the Longs holding up. W' Harold talked with Bobby at a NW manufactures event held in OR about a month ago. Bobby stated they have sold over 1,100 and have only had three come back!
Thanks again BJ for sharing.
BJ On Roids 09-04-2002, 01:38 PM nick, nick nick, where were you on the weekend? :(
well....say hi to your mum for me ;)
hey...no worries, helocat.....they are a top product....yeah fatbastard (photo taker) has been officially sacked, especially after his super poor effort on the video camera (his belly and feet are most of the footage, and some trees and sky and stuff)
:flipoff2:
3 have come back???? DAMN!!
not bad considering ive seen what idiots will do to them :p
