I now have a welded rear diff! Boat anchors away!

76 Scout II
Dana 44 rear
30 something spline

Upon reassembly though I am having a bitch of a time getting my passenger side axle to seat into the bearing cup. I think that someone put the bearings on the wrong way before I bought the Scout.

The drivers side has the race located in the cup and the bearings angled torwards the diff.

The passenger side has the race to the outside and the bearings angled away from the diff.

which way does that little ring get orientated and what is its purpose. It has a small boss on one end of it. Does that go torwards the bearings or away. It seems to be fucking my world up!

here is a picture of the "Boat Anchor"

Im not sure what you are saying but it sounds like one of the bearing/race assembly's are backward. The bearings go on the diff 1st then the race goes over the bearings. Its the same on both sides.

One very important thing to note: Allowing one bearing race to be inserted deeper than the other will cock differential making it impossible to get it seated. When you have differential almost seated, you can tap on outer part of each race with a rubber hammer. Tap back and forth on each side to ensure equal fit of the races.

If you are reusing the original bearings, they can not be interchanged but by the sound of it, I woould go with new ones anyways. Also the caps must be oriented correctly too. They are usually marked with an "A" or an arrow of sorts. This points up.

good luck and I would love to see the pics of this diff. Email em to me at ramstein@pirate4x4.com

Yea pic is FUCT. But yea when he said. The taper of the roller bearings pointed away from the diff. so the outer race can be removed without pulling the bearing off.

hmmm, I just re-read your post and I think you might be talking about the AXLE BEARINGS! DOH!!! If this is the case than your diff is in and good to go but the Pside shaft wont go.

OK, so it sounds like the Pside axle bearing is backwards. It sould look like this.

The pictures worked for me, and yes your bearing has been installed ass backwards.

The little ring in the picture shouldn't be there. It apears to be part of the bearing cage that has broken off. I've taken a lot of Scout axles apart and never seen anything like that before.

Replace them with some Timken Set10.

:D

YEAHHHH!!

Diff is already back in...I can handle that...just smack it!

My drivers side looks like that!!! my passenger side is opposite of that. with the bearings facing the flange of the axle instead of facing torwards the diff.

How hard is it to remove the bearings and re-install them in the correct orientation on the shaft?

After I learn how to do this I will never have to ask about this simple shit again...i have just never had or wanted to do it before!

Thanks...
