How far can you set the pinion angle on a HP60 (Ford housing)?

I have it set to 20 degrees now and want to move it a little higher before I weld the perches...

Should be able to go a little higher than that.

your at the point in which the pinion bearings are gonna be starved for lube........... might need to figure out an oil-slinger
on the ring gear.......

20*or more on for a pinion angle on a rear high pinion 60? What is your setup? I personally would not like to go more that 20* on a standard cut rear end, a HP one would make me really nervous with highway driving.

One of our rear HP 60s is set at 22.6 degrees. A couple of months back we drove this particular jeep on a 3200 mile round trip. We went to Colorado and back from So. Cali. with no problems.:confused: We drove quite a bit through the desert, some of the areas that we were driving through were normally hitting over 100 degrees. My pinion temp never went over 160 - 170 degrees. I would think that if I was starving the bearing the temps would be much higher.

I am running a Dana 300 in a CJ frame. It's tucked up pretty high. The shackle hangers are back on the end of the frame...Using the waggy springs with the short end towards the shackle.

After letting the new (used waggy) springs settle I got it set to 18 degrees...pointed just below the xfer case yoke.

I don't do any highway miles. I'm curious what the angle limit is. I know someone who had their Tera-60 pointed like 24 degrees and broke the pinion off clean. :rolleyes:

Have you ever heard of a cool little device called a non contact thermometer? The Snap On truck sells them.:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Could that have been as a result of Axle Wrap?

The pinion broke off clean and was blued from the heat. It only went a week or so before it broke.

I know two guys that have toasted two Tera HP 60s. The problem was lack of lub to the pinion bearing. Tera suggested they use lucas oil stabalizer.:rolleyes: I guess that is suppose to temporarly patch the problem till they get their oiling corrected.

thingy? does it use a regular dash-type guage for the display?
sounds a neat thing to monitor the rear if it's a daily driver.


are you speaking about an infrared thermometer???? if so,

did you guys stop occasionally, and get out, and take a temp

reading???? that's not quite* as conveinant as I was thinking..

Yes, it was an infared thermometer. And yes it was not very convenient, but worth the piece of mind. We took the readings every other time we stopped for fuel. In the past I heard of two D60s (non fords) seizing on the hwy due to lack of pinion bearing lubrication.:eek: I am not sure if the problem is exculsive to the Teras but those are the two I have heard of.:confused:
