I have started a few cheap projects with solid axle Toyota's. Both times I found an '85 Toy, standard cab, 4x4, EFI, in rough shape for around $400. If you don't care what they look like, that is a plus. Then weld the rear (and front if you want), buy a dual t-case adapter, find some used tires, and some type of lift. All together that will only be about $1500.

Good Luck

Here is a great place to start. Low first gear in the T-19 and locked in the rear.

How cheap? a month or so ago I picked an 83 Toyota up for $2k.

3" body lift, 5" springs, new 35" BFG M/T's, carbed STRONG 350 motor, TH350, Toy Tcase.

I welded the rear, am making my own crossover steering for about $300 for everything I need, got a used lockright for the front off of eBay for $170. Not too bad for well under $3k invested in it ;)

If you want a cheap hobby, play checkers. Cheap 4x4 is an oxymoron. You simply cannot combine the two words at all. They are polar opposites dude.
