: What's the most protective rocker guard/slider?
URBNFLX 04-13-2009, 10:46 AM I had posted last year about my dad getting himself a TJ for retirement and now after a summer of light to mild trail rides, He has upgraded the front and rear bumpers and added a tire carrier(Rock Hard Parts TJ tire carrier). There were some 1/8" diamond plate corners on the jeep when he got it.
Now its time to get some rocker protection going on... He cant decide on what he wants so I'm going to be getting him some rock armor for fathers day. I like the A to Z fab rock sliders and the Shrockworks ones but have seen the Sun Performance simple ones and the Tomken 2x4 bolt to the frame slider(seems like the most sturdy and can handle a high lift jack).
So my question to everyone is... what do you run, what do you recommend and do you/can you use your highlift jack off the tube or edge of the slider?
alehandro3 04-13-2009, 10:57 AM 2x4 square in my opinion rules the roost. I got 20 feet from the local steel yard and made front and rear bumpers and rockers for dirt cheap. Mine just has 2 legs extending to the frame and has about 3 inches sticking out of the body and 1 below. I use mine to pivot around trees all the time around here and between those and the tires sticking out way far I have been able to avoid tons of body damage that my buddies with simple angle iron bolted to the tub have gotten. Not sure of after market companies that offer some like this, but there really easy to make with little fab skills.
alehandro3 04-13-2009, 10:59 AM oh by the way, mine are only 1/8 inch and have taken tons of abuse with only a few real scars
The Black Sheep 04-13-2009, 11:59 AM Ive seen 3/16" all bent to shit, If you do serious crawling and expect to take good hits, I would go no less then 1/4" thick angle iron and build steps or bars off that. You should have searched, this topic was just covered for the 123,344,987,993,734 time the last time being about 1 week ago, I doubt its even fallen back past 2-3 pages.
52804X4 04-13-2009, 12:06 PM Check out Rokmen's sliders. (http://www.rokmen.com/products/rocker_armor/tj_mercenary_sliders/tj_mercenary_sliders.html) Cover from opening to opening (most stop at the flares)

Thanks, I did search and have been searching for a few months now. I saw that post a few days ago but it didn't go much into the commercially available rockers much and it was more based towards the "homebrew" rockers which I don't have the time to make. If this was my own rig and I didn't care what it looked like I would have been going the homebrew method since I don't really care about powder coating and asthetics. But this is for my dad and he wants it to look nice and be strong all at the same time.
Oh and btw, your post with a link to an older post is farther than a couple pages back by now... :flipoff2:
Lucy's Driver 04-13-2009, 01:24 PM Stay away from frame mount. They will eventually bend up into the body. Do a body mount set like you have posted above.
Knuckelhead 04-13-2009, 04:33 PM Seems to work for me...

I have Shrockworks and they are very tough rocker guards.
Heres a good writeup on them. They mount to the body and have a total of six bolts that mount from underneath with three fish plates inside the tub and several bolts that mount through the side of the tub. They also go almost all the way to the frame underneath the tub.

Click on the sidebar that says tech and look towards the lower right side under body armor for Shrockworks...for some reason the link I gave goes to the main page and I cant get the direct link:shaking:...but check em out.

x2 like mine. spendy but beefy
jung4g 04-13-2009, 08:39 PM I just put the Sun Performance ones on my YJ. I like them a lot for the price, but for the trails I do (mainly logging trails, forest runs), it was really just more to cover up my quick body work to take care of the rust as I won't hit much other than some dirt and 3-4" trees. I wouldn't have an issue sticking my hi-lift under them, though, they seem really sturdy.
For ~$165 shipped, 3/16" sliders with hardware... I can't complain.
Rockhnd 04-14-2009, 07:24 AM I have A-Z Fab rocker rails on my TJ. I like having the tube stick out to pivot around trees and rocks. I beat the snot out of my rockers and they works great. Be sure to get something that bolts to the side of the rocker as well as the bottom. I have seen others rip right off the Jeep with a high lift. I have used high lifts on mine and other A-Z Fab rockers with no problems.
Give Zach a call, you won't be disappointed.
Do Work 93 YJ 04-14-2009, 10:26 AM Mine or 3/16ths and have taken some pretty heavy hits and all i have to do is shoot some black paint back on were it knocked the paint off.:garfield:

4ward 04-14-2009, 02:32 PM I have Shrockworks on my TJ. All the Blue torch fab stuff is good.
blysccr 04-14-2009, 05:29 PM i was sold on the shrockworks because they protect under the tub. a to z also has this but wasn't advertised very well.
RDPrimeaux 04-15-2009, 03:51 PM most protective would be a frame mounted rocker guard. they will offer some protection for your body mounts. If I were to bend it up into the body, I am fairly positive a body mounted one would also bend.
2003_ram 04-15-2009, 03:59 PM Can't beat Poison spyder, though I don't think they make them anymore. :(

Actually they are under new ownership and I am fairly certain they will produce them once again, when I dont know but I wouldnt be surprised to see them again.
URBNFLX 04-16-2009, 12:45 PM Ok guys thanks for the responses. I have narrowed it down to the Shrockworks or the A to Z Fab sliders. The only thing now is that the A to Z fab sliders come with either a tube or box slider... the front and rear bumpers are not tube but constructed of box. Does the tube hold up better than the box or vice versa?
Rockhnd 04-17-2009, 05:44 AM I know people that have both, each have taken the full wieght of the Jeep. It's more of a personal preference thing.
In theory, round shapes are stronger though.

Yup.
I have had most (not full) of the weight pressed against my rocker (I got the poison spyder with the tube) and worst I have gotten is a scratch.
I love them, act as a damn good step also.

Yes we're back! We hope to be shipping product in May. Check our website for updates.
Thanks,
StinkyMcStink 04-21-2009, 09:33 PM I have no idea what brand they are as I bought them used, but mine are 1/4" thick and they originally stopped about 2" short of the door jamb. I welded on a piece of 1/4" plate to cover all the way to the bottom of the doors. They bolt to the body. Counting the 1/4" plate and the rockers themselves, I have $75 invested in them.

They're all in the works! Soon Very Soon!
slvrjp00 04-22-2009, 02:13 PM I have the Warn Rock Sliders on my Jeep. I have beat the snot out of them for 5 years with no problems. I have hi lifted off them many times with no problems. If I had to pick between the two you have I would say A to Z. I have never heard bad things about there products.
retardatwork 04-22-2009, 04:23 PM Genright rock guards.
I like having a step. The step has not been an issue as far as getting hung up but it really does not protect the rear panels as much as I thought they would. Mostly because of how low they are relative to the angle of the body hitting the object. I have fullwidths and those sliders and I still get damage.
Sliding over a rock which did cause a slight flat spot in the rear of the step
retardatwork 04-22-2009, 04:26 PM The angle problem I was talking about. This would have caused damage to the tub if it wasn't for the armour.
