Always go more. If you get the 4 and then realize that the 6 would have been perfect you will be Just tell him to get the 6" lift because it is just correct.

Yeah I had a 88 K5 and it only had the 4 and it sucked. 6 or more is the way to go.

Oh also With my four inch lift I could clear 33's but when flexed up the front would hit. I have seen street trucks run 35's with 4 inch of lift but no offroad for them. If you want to clear 35's you need 6 inch.

I did the same thing originally! I ended up pulling off the 4" and losing money on it when I sold it to buy the 6". For sure go with the 6 inch!!!!
I still had to do some minor fender trimming with 35s and a 6". Now I'm running 38s with an additional 3" body. It's AWESOME!!!
It sits up just right with the 6" and 35s!!
GO 6 INCH FOR SURE!!!!

Hmm, I have 4" of lift and run 36x14.5x15 Super Swamper TSL Radials. Can pull 1000 on a 25 degree ramp and no rubbing on the trails!
Course I did trim us some sheet metal just a tad here and there.

I agree with the rest of these guys. If you're gonna do it, do it right the first time and save money. 6 inches is just right for 35's and if you want to go bigger, you'll have more versatility to do it... with fender trimming or a body lift.
A month after I lifted my K5 and slapped on the 35" Boggers... the truck didn't seem that big anymore.. so now I'm going bigger.
Running a 4" lift requires a 4" steering arm and extended brake lines. The only extra mods needed to jump to a 6" lift is a 2" pitman arm and a front driveshaft spacer. That's what I'm running and it works great.
Tell your buddy that he will regret going with a 4". Its not much more trouble to run a 6".

Thats what I have and thats as high as I want to go. You can cruise up and down main street all night long on 35s with a 4" lift and no trimming. Wheel it and you will need to adjust some sheetmetal but if done properly it can look good.

From a financial standpoint, never repeat a modification. Go large the first time and he won't have to pay for a 6 inch kit down the road.

I talked myself into a 4" lift instead of 6". I ended up adding (GASP!) a 3" body lift when I decided 35"s weren't large enough.
If you are SURE you are going to keep 35" tires FOREVER, 4" will be great, and a minor amt of trimming will keep them from rubbing.
If there is any chance of going to bigger tires, get the 6".

Go with the 4". I've got a 6" w/ 35's, there is no way the blazer weighs enough to compress thoughs springs. They look like big U's. I'm looking for 4" fronts and some stock rears, so I can lower it and put the 39.5's on.
Just cut it.
Ryan@FatCityOffRoad
Definately 4" and sawzall. 6" is ok, no more than that though...you start getting too high up there. Remember, the lower CG the better. I'm running 36" Swamps and 4" lift. Soon to be 38" to 40" Swamps, same lift....sawzall is a good friend of mine

I got a four inch lift and 35's and with a little creative fender trimming nothing hits and I can stuff the tires into the wheel wells big time...
A buddy has a six inch lift and can't get the same flex that I can with it.. the more lift you do the less the springs will compress...
you can get softer springs but then you'll be all over the road if it's a daily driver with all the sway you will have..
A lot of how big you want is what kind of 4 wheeling your going to do.. if he's going to be doing trails and rocks then the lower lift I feel would do him better.. if you need clearance for the mud pits then go big and tall..
everyone has a different idea of how big and high they want there truck..
individuality makes the hobby fun and unique..

6" and 35s look/work good...on the STREET.
On the trail, its too little tire and too much lift.
BTW, isn't the biggest Thornbird a 35? (says 38 in sig)

Four inch gets my vote. 35s will fit with trimming. The bigger the lift, the stiffer the springs.
For six years I wheeled a 72 Blazer with 35x15.50 SX's. Had a 2.5" susp and 2" body. Allowed me to keep nice soft springs and a lower center of gravity than just a straight 4" spring lift.

They make 38x14.50 now. Usually bigger is better, but sometimes it's just more of a bad thing

4", if it won't clear, cut more, want a little more, do a 1" body. There's plenty of room between the headlights and the firewall for a 40" tire and a 4" lift, right pete!
You may get some dents on the rocker panels, but you won't have as many on the roof.

Go with 4" and do some "Tasteful Trimming" By the time mine is all said and done I'll have 39.5 Boggies on a 6".

I've got a 4in lift with 35's and trimed fenders and it works great but I keep wanting bigger tires and wish I would have went with the 6in lift. I saw a blazer in one of the mags this month or last month that was running 38's with the 4in lift but there wasn't much left of his fenders.

I run 36" TSL's with 4" susp. and a 1" ORD body lift and some "tasteful trimming". I'm not going any higher than that. My next tire will be the 38.5x14.5 TSL-SX, I'll just keep trimming til they don't hit.
I also prefer dents on my rockers to dents on my roof.

I faced the same problem went big (lift) hated it and now am paying to go lower, I plan on running 6 for 39.5's but I am planning on ORD shackle flip and a 2 inch rear spring (softer) and a 6 inch front , hopefully that will allow me to trim the fenders keep my truck low and still have good spring flex.

Heck, I started with 33's on a stock height 79, then took a BFH and battery sawzall wheelin with me. Amazing how well it worked after that trip. Since then I went 4" springs on front, shackle flip rear, 35's, and took the BFH with me again.
