: Holley Truck Avenger Trail Report

Well folks, I have been running my holley truck avenger for two month, and this is my opinion:
I think this carb really works fine in real world. Since then, I have it tested in dunes and rocky-muddy terrain ( very similar to Tellico, but here in Chile).
In dunes the performance is excellent. No stall at all. The only weak point is when you are descending a really step hill and you push the gas heavy at the end; the carb tends to have a little delay (slow response) To solve that, the only thing you need to do, is to push a little on the gas when you are aproaching the end of the dune and that's it. In all other conditions, in this type of terrain it worked really well.
In rocky-muddy terreain, with very step inclines the engine never stalled. Actually I almost rolled over my back ( my jeeps back) for a stupid manuver, and the engine continued rolling without trouble, and it gave me time to put reverse and go back.
I think it's a good choice for someone that do not want to deal with EFI.
My only concern with the truck avenger up to now, is the choke. I really do not know what's going on, but at any temp of the engine, the choke start's to work. Right now, I did the lazy work and disconected it, but I will look for the trouble soon. At the end, If I paid $ 389 for it, I want it to work !

Ok I will explain it more clearly. First, if the engine is cold, the choke turns on, making the engine to run at 2000 PRM aprox. Then after about 1 minute the engine dies. I mean you can't make it run!!! It's completly flooded. You have to wait for a long time, take apart the air filter and then it starts again.
That's problem number one. Problem two, is that my temp gauge says that the engine it's warm and the choke starts always.
Any Idea??. I know that you can adjust the choke speed, and it's something that I haven't done yet. I supposed that It was ready out of the box !!

I have seen one used in competetivel rock crawling, it was choking gasping and stalling miserably on nose down, off camber manuevers. It did not look impressive, on steep uphill start ups, that required a heavy throttle,(it was hard to start, would smoke, and smelled very rich), it also stalled very often when a heavy foot was needed from a steep stand still start.

In my opinion, It may be a good off road carb, but it is hardly a viable replacement for EFI, or propane, for extreme rock crawling.

I have read other negative write ups on the board here in regaurds to tuning, and its ability to handle elevation changes.

H8monday,

although you stated it was in competition you didnt really state whether a 'carb illiterate' was using it.
do you know who was running it personally and can vouch that they had it set up?
nothing is going to wrest efi or propane from the top of the heap IMO (unless maybe a well done mech FI)
I have yet to see anything that shows me an improvement in the Truck avenger metering block so I am not backing it at all.
I need to see a real review of it though before I condemn it entirely
the typical holley tricks need to be tested, lowered float levels etc
to see if they help at all on that
a real look at the 'new' metering block and the 'what they changed' list

To be honest I dont know anything about the guy.
It was durring the Moonrocks comp, and I dont even remember what rig it was on. I just remeber he was struggeling, and some other competitors said he had mentioned he was running the new carb, and had told them earlier that it was the awsome.

Maybe I shouldnt have even mentioned it, since I really have no real world experience with the carb.
Maybe someone with more knowledge of the driver or the rig will chime in with more info.

Sorry, Ill just keep my yap shut.
