: Camo needs camo help

Some of you may have followed my RV story in chit chat.

Basically I have a 32' Moho that needs some uniqueness added.

I wanted to do it all flat black but that is just to much. So I have settled on a desert sand and flat black motif.

My question is. What paint to use. I don't think I want to use a real mil-spec carc paint but then again I am clueless and figured you guys can steer me in the best direction.

I found a Rust-oleum flat Khaki I like but of course it doesn't come in gallons.

So doing some net searching I found the Kyrlon brand but need to go find an Ace store and see if I like the color.

Go to a parts store that sells paint. Tell them what color you want and them them you want it in a cheap acrylic ennamel. Its a one part paint that is tough and should be easy to work with. It is commonly used on tractors.

so you are saying that instead of getting specific advise from my friends here on Pirate4x4 who have first hand experiance with all sorts of brands and camo painting experiance I should go to auto-zone and rely on some 17 year old pimple face stonner for my paint tech ? ya thats great

I am thinking more of a mad max goes to Iraq kinda look

I'm using krylon to do the desert marpat on the rig, but it a grant total of like 40 square feet. Tractor supplys enamal is almost indestructible, and easy to spray but I don't know if they have your color. I also like ppg with their flattening agent. Its the best paint IMHO but its spendy.

i'd stop by both sherwin williams and and auto paint supply store and see what they recommend. they have both of those in placerville and probably in auburn, which ever side of the divide you want to pop out on.

i know you can get a mil-spec polane finish from sherwin williams but it would be expensive to coat an entire moho. many of the firearm finishes are very similar to polane.

I'd bet the krylon in the aerosol cans, can be had by the gallon.

At least that way, touch-ups would be an easy match. My ace guy will order stuff for me. Otherwise some online dealers are there as well.

These are online dealers listed on the Krylon website.

ArtSuppliesOnLine.com

McLean & Ballard Ace Hardware

i used the spray on a rifle over 5 years ago and it is still holding up great.

this is the rifle that was finished in the spray. i am pretty sure that the "marsh grass" is the tan color:

my experience trying to get my truck painted OD:

went to sherman williams retail, and industrial, and automotive.
nothing that WASNT latex or glossy OR over 100 bucks.
i got some camo paint from ace hardware (local folk) and it was latex. it didnt show that on the outside of the can, so i ended up having to scrub it off again the next morning..... over night it rusted thru

finally settled on home depot. was the only fucking paint that i could find that was gonna stick and be worth it. they had rustoleum dark olive in a satin finish. close enough. it will protect from rust, and is solvent based. used 4 quarts (gallon) to paint it. 7.68 a quart.

used a roller and a 2 inch brush. sanded with 180 and washed with gasoline and acetone

to date its been a little over a year. the roof needs to be repainted due to the heat, but the rest of the truck looks bangin still..... no severe fade from the sun (sits in the driveway the whole time) minus where i bent the fawk outta the sheet metal. im impressed with its worthyness. i need to hit the spots that are rusting where the paint was rubbed off by tree's and re-brush those areas.

the star i went to hobby lobby and found a big fucking star..... just traced it onto some paper and taped it on the doors. easy.

I concur, the way it's going to look now with the solid black stripe and desert tan upper area makes it look like the owner went redneck on a perfectly good stock Moho paint job with spray can camo and its probably held up inside with a small aresenal of guns and moonshine. :flipoff2: I think the bogger track will say "Some time and thought went into this"

ETA: Now that I think about it, all you need is a model, a light source, and some template paper and you can trace out some templates pretty quickly. If not that, you could use an overhead projector to enlarge some smaller templates.
