what is the weight limit on the 9.5 14 bolt.. the 10 bolt in my dads truck is a ticking time bomb and we want to swap it...

4800 lbs is the common number I see.

*edit* That's about 1100-1200 more than a 10 bolt depending on where you get your numbers from.

well the 09 1/2 tons with the 6.2 and 6.0 get that axle and have a 4,200 lb rating. I'd venture to say 4500 lbs or more.

Note my 8.6s 10 bolt have a rear axle rating of 4,000 so they are only bumping 200 lbs which doesn't seem like much.

There are 2 versions of the axle. One has a wheel bearing that is about 3/4 inch wide, the other has one that is about 2 times that big.

We have the big bearing axle in my dads 3/4 ton. I'm pretty sure that thing has been loaded way beyond 4500 lbs for most of it's life. We have never lost one due to overloading it. We've burned em up from bad lube or water, or just plain wear, but never a bearing, always the gears.

I'd say it's every bit as tough as you will ever need in a 1/2 ton truck.

1,000 lbs. more than the 10blt. In the half tons they came in they were rated with a GVWR of 1,000lbs. more.

If you're really worried about load rating go FF. If you're just occasionally hauling loads then you should be fine with a SF.

huh, they only bump the GVW of 07 to 09s 200 lbs for the HD rear axle.

i'm not talking about an 07.. the truck in question is a 96 tahoe 1500...probably should have included that..

I have one in my 93 6 lug 3/4 ton 7200 gvw. Very happy with it.

At 233K miles I changed the lube for the first time and replaced the spider gears and side gear set due to some pitting and axle seals, parts kit was $130.00 . Thats all I did everything else was perfect.

the sound a gay lion makes?

:flipoff2:

gilraine- I do not have an answer to your question, but if the 10 bolt went all these years, wouldn't any 14B be fine? whats that trailer weigh, like 7K loaded? or does it have marble counters and tile floors or something?

wet I think it is closer to 8k..he has only had the camper a year and I really don't trust the 10 bolt.. I grenaded mine with 6K of firewood last year..

Dang, that sucks. I've got over 100K in mine. of that 99,950 were w/ 33" or bigger tires and of that over 30K miles have been w/ a weight of over 12K lbs combined (up to 17 or 18K one time).

The 8 lug (8600 lb GVWR) 14 bolt SF was rated around 6k. No idea on the 6 lug (6600/7200 GVWR) model.

It's got one of the largest diameter axle shafts out there...being a semi-floater, of course.....almost 1.375" at the splines. 33 spline, IIRC.

Pretty sure the 8-lug (3/4T) axles were the ones with the ~2" wide wheel bearings. I have one under my 4Runner, and used the 6-lug shafts in it. The 6-lug shafts are about 1/2" longer, but the 6-lug shafts' narrower bearing surface still rides on the wider shafts...and this rig maybe sees 500 miles/year...hard miles, not fast miles!!

Another option with a bit more work--and waay more strength--would be a 10.5" 14FF and have the hub center turned down to 4.25" to fit a 6-lug wheel, and redrill the hub for 6 on 5.5".
