dezrik 04-19-2009, 12:27 PM Can they be made street legal? Im assuming you don't need a CDL to drive one either?

We started the next BOB deuce today-- I'll post a couple pics when we get done.
KENNY-SAS DAKOTA 04-23-2009, 12:00 PM So in california do you have to have a cdl to drive these? And are they street leagal in ca? If not what has to be changed?
100dollarman 04-24-2009, 08:16 AM So in california do you have to have a cdl to drive these? And are they street leagal in ca? If not what has to be changed?
In Ca. technically you are supposed to have a class B license because of the 3rd axle.
KENNY-SAS DAKOTA 04-24-2009, 11:56 AM so the truck itself is legal?
100dollarman 04-24-2009, 12:12 PM so the truck itself is legal?
You would have to get it registered, but yes its legal.
I usually dont title the trucks before I sell them-- When you buy one, I order a Gov title (SF97) for that particular truck. You take that, plus a bill of sale from me, and a weight cert and a VIN verification to the DMV. They will give you new title, registration.
bluedragon436 04-24-2009, 03:56 PM That seems like a very simple process... I really want a bobbed Duece so bad... I have been looking at your items for a bit now, trying to come up with the money, and being able to justify it to the financial advisor right now!!
I have visions of getting rid of my DD diesel 1-ton and getting something smaller and more comfortable to drive on a daily basis. A bobbed deuce might make a nice occasional hauler and tow rig. But I could see it sitting in the yard for two or three weeks at a time between starts. How reliable are these on a semi-regular basis? How are they through cold winters (like a dude from Cali is gonna be able to answer that.)
DRTDEVL 04-25-2009, 07:41 AM The Guard and Reserve have been using these on a semi-regular basis (one weekend per month) for 40 years. It's actually how it's designed to be run... Occasionally.
Cold starting can be a bitch at times. You'l; probably want a good heater setup to plug in a few hours prior to your intended use. Also, be advised: The heaters in these things suck big fat donkey balls!!! Dress very warmly! :flipoff2:

I am a mechanic for the army reserves....
As long as the batts are hot, and there is air in the tires it will start and run. I have personally seen one of these trucks that has sat for over 5 years fire right up with jumper cables.
The largest problems with these trucks, is sometimes a leaky transmission cooler line, the CTS system (if eqquiped) and shorts between the seats and steeringwheel.

His work truck is a 7 spd, I have a 10 spd eaton in my work truck. I'd like to back the cummins up with a 10 spd in a 5 ton for xtra get up and go !!:smokin:
100dollarman 05-18-2009, 01:50 PM whats the bed length on the bobbed deuce ? I think on with a camper trailer body on it would be badass - like a poor mans unicat
We can make the bed however long a customer wants it, but when we use a M105 trailer bed those are 9' long.
When I get caught up a bit (have 3 more Bobbed Deuces lined up right now-) I think I might try a regular 12' deuce bed without chopping the frame, but lift it with 53" tires!!! That would be a BEAST!:grinpimp:

100dollarman 05-29-2009, 11:14 AM How much does a bobbed one run? $$$ wise
About $7500 for a bobbed deuce- here is one that rolled out yesterday-
100dollarman 05-29-2009, 11:15 AM What all is required to get it registered in CA? And what lisense do you need to drive it?
Easy to register--- need a class b for a stocker because of 3rd axle. Maybe legal with a reg license for a bob. Grey area.
benttoy 05-29-2009, 11:49 AM I saw the truck you said that left yesterday going down 395. they look badass:smokin:
cj8scrambld 05-29-2009, 02:59 PM Way cool! A few questions for you.
Approx. how many miles do you find they have?
Do the bobbed Dueces' come as shown...with the larger tires?
Any of them have Detroit lockers in the rear...was that even a military option?
Are they ready to register with a local DMV?
And my biggest question....I need a yard plow truck. Have you ever seen any of these with plow setups? Can a plow setup be had?
I may be very interested, just have to figure out how to fund it. That i will figure out soon enough. Thanks!
crewchief 05-29-2009, 06:07 PM You can mount plows on them easy. Just got back from working on a old 54 gmc 2 1/2 ton that was given to us and checked out a 5 ton with a huge blade and side wing blade. These things can push some snow!
Kenny714 05-29-2009, 08:28 PM Just got mine registered "Historic" and legal for the road. It's a 1968 with only 3600 miles. We took it out this past weekend and got it up to 53 MPH on the way to the trails.

The crew cab is not a stock truck. It is a truck that has had two cabs modified and welded together. There are about five 2.5 and 5 ton trucks out there that have bee converted to a crew cab that I am aware of. I don't think 100DollarMan is offering those for sale, it was just brought up in the thread. The labor costs of making a crew cab would probably make it completely unrealistic to manufacture and sell one.
JOKER4X4 06-01-2009, 07:46 AM wasn't the Cummins NHC 250 only in the 5 tons?
DixieDuo 06-01-2009, 08:15 AM Thanks for the info on the crew cab. I may just leave them at home.
Elwenil 06-01-2009, 11:53 AM wasn't the Cummins NHC 250 only in the 5 tons?
Correct. The typical 2.5 ton engine is the LDT465 thought here are a few other versions of the 465 and similar engines as well as the early gas engined models and the M35A3 has a Caterpillar engine. The only Cummins engine in a 2.5 ton that I am aware of are the few M35 conversions with the 6BT but they are very, very rare though it is possible to swap one in yourself.
kamikazemotorsports 06-01-2009, 02:40 PM Btw you can have auto tranny in those deuce .... all canadien M35 come with auto tranny. I know a place where they have at least a dozen of those trannys ... but they are located in Canada near Montreal and shipping would be a killer ... but if you ever want it automatic ... you have at least an option.
Elwenil 06-01-2009, 03:16 PM M35A3s are also automatic. Real men drive a stick though, lol.
JOKER4X4 06-01-2009, 06:47 PM Correct.
Yeah, I've driven an A3 with the 3116; pretty beastly. I would love to run an NHC in the deuce I'm buying, but then i can't toss all my used engine oil in the tank...:grinpimp:
Elwenil 06-01-2009, 06:54 PM The NHC 250 Cummins will not fit in a Deuce. If you notice, the M44 series 2.5 and M39 and M809 series 5 tons are built the same and share the same cab, doors windshield frame, etc but the front end on the 5 tons is longer for engine clearance. Similarly, the M35A3 has a slightly longer nose and a much taller radiator which is what causes the stupid looking hood to be higher in the front than it is at the cab.
JOKER4X4 06-01-2009, 08:05 PM I know that the 2.5T and 5T trucks are very different and that the NHC (and it's extra components are huge), but it would be nice to have 250-300hp on tap...not that I need that...:stirthepot:
Rock Hoppe 06-01-2009, 10:04 PM What kind of mileage do these things get on highway cause I want one but gotta drive back to Colorado with it.
cj8scrambld 06-02-2009, 06:05 AM ^^^ From what I've seen ...in the 10-12mpg range on the highway.
Elwenil 06-02-2009, 07:23 AM I've seen owners report as low as 6 MPG to as high as 16 MPG, but generally it seems to be around 10 MPG as Cj8Scrambld stated.
100dollarman 06-02-2009, 09:06 AM That last bobbed deuce that went outta here last week reported a solid 10.5 mpg pulling the trailer 426 miles from here to Reno.
crewchief 06-02-2009, 02:06 PM Here is a question. If i bought one of these bobbed do you think it could make the ultimate road trip to northern idaho with out too many issues?
100dollarman 06-02-2009, 07:41 PM Here is a question. If i bought one of these bobbed do you think it could make the ultimate road trip to northern idaho with out too many issues?
I was thinking about some smartassed answers---- but, yes the trucks are generally pretty reliable. Are YOU up to it? LOL Thats a long drive!:grinpimp:
crewchief 06-03-2009, 01:07 PM Well i want to give it a try mabey around koh time next year and drive it home. It will be a long drive but so worth it in my book! I just have to get one of these!
Philistine 06-04-2009, 04:39 AM What's the wheelbase when bobbed?
JOKER4X4 06-04-2009, 07:55 AM What's the wheelbase when bobbed?
IIRC, a bobbed one is shorter than a long one:D I think Hundy can bob it to your desired WB, but not too much, since the same driveshaft is used...I think
100dollarman 06-06-2009, 09:45 AM What's the wheelbase when bobbed?
I havent measured the WB, but we are doing one now and I can get the measurement next week.
Like JOKER said- We can make it whatever!

Thinking about picking one of these up from you but have a couple of questions:
What are the internal bed dimensions?
Can it be made to fit a 82" x 130" buggy?
I know the 6x6 is rated at 5,000 lbs for offroad payload, will a bobbed deuce carry a 4,500 lbs buggy?
If there is absolutely no way of getting a buggy in the back...what will it tow a 16' trailer like?
~Mike

Hey Mike-
The trailer bed that we use on the bob deuces is 9'. The stock bed is 12'. We can cut/customize a bed to any length.
When we customize the truck by taking out springs and an axle the load carrying capacity decreases. But I cant say what the rating will be. I think it could hold your buggy, but that is something you would have to decide on. You might consider going with a full size deuce with super singles---- we can put 6 46" tires on a stock deuce.
Call me for more info if needed---
100dollarman 06-18-2009, 10:10 PM IIRC, a bobbed one is shorter than a long one:D I think Hundy can bob it to your desired WB, but not too much, since the same driveshaft is used...I think
I still havent measured the wheelbase-:homer:
We can make it any length though- I have the driveshafts custom made to my specs.:grinpimp:
Tattookenny 07-04-2009, 03:55 AM I'm amazed at all the interest in the bobbed M35A2's! I've had mine for sale on here for a while with very few bites. What size tires are your leaving with? I'm running 53" XZL's on mine. Also do you have any hydro assist units to get rid of?

Most of the Bobbed trucks have 395s or 14.00s when they go out of here--
Sorry- I dont have any hydros available. Wish I had a few kits right now--
br0nc0xrapt0r 08-23-2009, 08:10 AM You've got me really thinking about this if I can get stationed in CA again, do you do anything with the gearing when you bob it and add the 46's? I would assume you leave it stock since it's so low in the first place so I would guess that the top speed of about 55 is reffering to the bobbed rig. do any of them come with the winches? and what could be done to make it go about 65 pulling a trailer with two broncos :D
offroadjunkie 08-23-2009, 10:43 PM i bet a 12valve cummins swap would make it haul that pretty well. These things are so sick. I have been eyeing them at auctions lately.

Na, Dodge standard output ISB w/P7100. It'd sound just as tough as the truck.
100dollarman 09-08-2009, 11:13 AM I have several good Deuces in stock!!!
Here is a pic of what they look like when bobbed
that is freakin badass dude wish i had two :smokin:
Azzy2000 09-09-2009, 09:46 AM Here is a question. If i bought one of these bobbed do you think it could make the ultimate road trip to northern idaho with out too many issues?
If the truck is in decent shape, I wouldnt hesitate to drive it long distance. Check all fluids, lights, tires etc before leaving out and do a basic check every time you stop for fuel. I drove one 1,200 miles from Indiana back to Houston. I neglected to check the oil level in the trans and toasted the rear output bearing 200 miles from home.. I found a complete 3053a trans to swap in for $100 though. Parts are readily available for these trucks and prices are not bad.
k5chevyblazer 09-10-2009, 04:52 PM do they come with a dump bed? or do you have one with a dump?
100dollarman 09-10-2009, 05:28 PM do they come with a dump bed? or do you have one with a dump?

Seriously though- I can build one.:smokin:

thebrassnuckles 10-02-2009, 08:46 AM how BIG are these things? the overal length width and heigth of a bobbed deuce?
also how much would it be for one that looked just like the one in the pic you posted? with the bed?

do they come in as good of condition or are these gonna be a restoration project?

I think they are 20' long without a winch. We are doing another one right now- I can measure it when done if you need exact measurements. But they are about 100" wide and about 9' tall.
One in the pic is about $8500 with winch, about $7500 without. They are in good condition.
thebrassnuckles 10-02-2009, 10:42 AM i am very interested in the specs on these. would you recommend driving one of these on regular city streets? kind of like a somewhat daily driver..

We use a M105 trailer bed-- I think it is 9' long. The stock deuce bed is 12'9".
If you want some more bobbed pics send me an email to liberty@sisp.net and I will reply with some.
twinrex 10-02-2009, 01:53 PM Can you run 53's on those? What top speed increase to?
Do the $2500 trucks you sell usually need more work, or are they just trucks that aren't popular, like non turbos non multifuel?
I am really interested in them but i don't want one i have to immediately work on lol

You can put 53s, but they may rub if you dont lift the truck.
The $2500 trucks sometimes need a little TLC, or maybe I picked them up a little cheaper. But they are all turbos. Some have been converted to diesel only, but that doesnt change the price. The best trucks go for more.
I dont always have a $2500 truck for sale. Most of the $2500 trucks you can drive home.

Yes.

montecarlo31 11-23-2009, 05:00 PM Whats the major differences in driving them as opposed to, say, a mack dump truck? And where do you get replacement parts?
Mack drives much better and has about 20x the pick up of these. I've rocked both. Most Mack trucks are triple air or at least air ride cab / seat. These are springs on the axles, springs on the seats and cab bolted to chassis. It is however very easy to add a/c to these bad boys which I would do. Mine will freeze you out on 1 in the hot Florida sun. I won't whore up this post with mine unless hundy is cool w/ it.
Parts are easy but you really don't need anything.
what is involed in lifting a 2.5ton to fit 53's
Re spring. Any spring shop can either add springs (stiffer but taller) or re-arch the springs. We do this all the time. You could go up 2" for probably 500 bucks, maybe less if your spring shop likes the project.

Yes you could drive it back *IF* you have a dealer plate or Hundy will send the SF97. Tag and title work is easy. As for insurance I have no idea we have commercial insurance on ours.
Yes they have horns and they sound 100% gay. I upgraded ours to regular truck air horns (or train horns for those with balls).

That would ride like complete crap. Our 5 tons ride ok with about 4500 gallons of water on board otherwise it's pretty rough, I can bet with the shorter wheelbase it would be rough too.
cj8scrambld 11-27-2009, 06:17 AM Suspension? Did someone say something about a suspension..or lack there of. You're right, it would be pretty rough....kidneys wouldn't live long. I was thinking more along the lines of a plow (snow) truck. I'm still playing with the idea of a bob'd deuce for my plow work.....but finding a plow setup seems like the hard part. And not sure what it would be to ship a bob'd deuce to my area....01056?

Try Uship for bids on freight---

The size and weight are in here if I'm not mistaken. 10K lbs, 20' long. You'll need a good gooseneck in my opinion. Motor depends but 99.9% of all hundy's trucks are Continental multi fuelers. That's what you will find in most trucks until you go to a 5ton.

nriver 02-17-2010, 10:03 PM Nice
Cappa 02-25-2010, 07:48 AM Can they be made street legal? Im assuming you don't need a CDL to drive one either?
In California you don't need a CDL. You do for a 5-ton or bigger though (unless registered as historical). However if you go to register it normally you will have to have the truck weighed and then pay through the nose for weight fees and yearly registration. But you can skip all that and register it as a historical vehicle. It's like $50 a year. Bummer is, this type of registration has it's limitations. If you get caught hauling stuff in the bed or driving it other than to or from a "Historical Event" you can be ticketed and fined.
100dollarman 02-26-2010, 08:47 PM The way I understand it- registered as a Historical Vehicle, you cannot use it to haul or work with it, but you are not limited to driving to historical events only. Depends how you interpret the wording of the law.
That said- I really havent heard of anyone having a hard time with the law.

In Cali, a Class B license(minimum) is required to drive a 3 axle vehicle with a GVWR of 6,001 lbs or more. In other words, most states don't require a CDL for a deuce, but Cali does. If it were bobbed, however, then the weight limit changes, because 2 axle trucks don't require a CDL until 26,001 lbs. So you could cruise a bobbed deuce with a regular class C license.
DEMON76 02-27-2010, 04:01 PM Why won't you sell one to a Canadian?
montecarlo31 02-27-2010, 05:17 PM Why won't you sell one to a Canadian?
It's against the law. You can not sell these trucks to any non us citizens. They were produced for the US military and that's their rules.
503m715 02-27-2010, 10:48 PM You can sell US military trucks to buyers in Canada if the right paper work is filled out. (Exporting companies will do it for a price)

Fortunate sun 03-06-2010, 08:23 AM Would a Jeep YJ fit in the back of one of these? I know width wise it should fit. Width I'm looking at 85 inches.
dezrik 03-06-2010, 09:24 AM It would probably fit but, why would you use one of these as a tow rig? Not gonna get more then 6-8mpg in these iron trucks
Fortunate sun 03-06-2010, 09:26 AM It would probably fit but, why would you use one of these as a tow rig? Not gonna get more then 6-8mpg in these iron trucks
then I can carry all my gear with me. My jeep only gets like 10 at best anyway.
100dollarman 03-06-2010, 11:27 AM The YJ will fit.
I have been getting reports of 9-10mpg on fuel mileage on the Deuces, and 11mpg for the bobbed.
Fortunate sun 03-06-2010, 04:59 PM Thanks man, I appreciate the info. I'm going to have to buy within Canada though.

A blk heater is probably a good idea in 10 degrees. They dont come with one- you can use different types-- maybe $20-$60 or so?

lar45 09-10-2010, 01:19 PM These look really awsome, and can really fire up a guys imagination and motivation to get one. :D
How do they do offroad? Is the suspension terribly stiff?
I"m thinking maybe an air ride chair from a semi or something.
How do they do on the highway? is there any way to balance the tires, or just live with it?
With the larger tires, what kind of top crusing speed is possible?
Sorry for the lots o Qs, it's like posting Heavy Metal Porn, lol
What is the prefered engine? would it be possible to swap in a 250 Cummins? or would it be much too heavy?

I have one winch truck rt now- good runner- line looks like a rat's nest- not sure if it will need a new line or not. $5500
I have the 395s in stock- $300 each
They fit nicely on a deuce.
100dollarman 10-04-2010, 08:42 PM Here are a few more trucks in stock today---
100dollarman 10-04-2010, 08:45 PM more-
100dollarman 10-04-2010, 08:47 PM BTW- this is an old thread- prices have increased-
good runner soft top deuce is $4000
5 ton are $6500-$7500
I still have a couple of deuces in the $2500-3500 range-
nobearsyet 12-05-2010, 01:02 PM Bumo, I want one.
RLSumner 12-13-2010, 09:57 PM I am going to bob my own deuce. Can't make up my mind if I want to stick with a 4x4 or just single it out into a 6x6 with the larger tires. The thing I'm scratching my head over is the tire size. How big are the larger tires that I see on all these bobbed deuces? For that matter how much $ do they run? Is it legal in my state? The only "lift law" I can find deals with bumper height, but it only affects "light duty trucks". I cant find anything that gives a definite tire size limit for any class of vehicle. I live in South Carolina and before I make the investment I want to know that I'm going to be legal. I want to use the truck for a number of things, but mainly towing my junk to Uwharrie and Tellico. Has anyone "turned up" the injector pump on these trucks? Do they run an intercooler? Can an intercooler be added or the existing one upgraded?
5.9 ANDY 12-26-2010, 07:27 AM dang, maby when i get out of the corps i can deliver trucks for people. just throw a bike in the back and drive back to cali.
BlizzardX23 12-28-2010, 03:36 PM Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to read up on why 4x4 is preferred over 6x6?
Why is Bobbing so popular?
Dont get me wrong...they are bad ass...just wondering why choose to bob it? wouldnt 6x6 help in more situations?
By the Way...Im not trying to Hi-Jack the thread...I posted here because Im wanting to buy from 100

No Prob!
We have done 31 bobbers now-- but I have sold around twice as many (or more) 6x6. So, it is just whatever the customer wants. Personal preference. But some 'pros' of the bobber-
accels better
stops better
turns better
better mpg
cool
smaller/lighter
The miltary trucks arent for everyone, and the bobbers arent for eveyone-- its really whatever you want!!!:grinpimp:
BlizzardX23 12-29-2010, 01:01 PM I see...Thanks for clearing that up for me! Im guessing driving through creeks and small rivers...or as a recovery vehicle at a local 4x4 park, the 6x6 would probably be a little better though?
Im really excited about getting one of these now! Hopefully, I can find a good runner that fits in my price range...as I am a 23 yr old college student with no funds lol =/
funny...I shoulda thought about this when I was a 63B (Wheel Mechanic) in the Army...woulda been easier to get myself set up with one of these when I was on base... (DRMO)
BTW, PM sent!

Do I need to make an appointment or just call before I head over? I like your bussiness model, it's like a local clark truck but alot cheaper.

I have read these threads about Bobbed Deuce's for over a year now, with varying interest and increasing curiosity. However, your statement above somewhat confuses me and finally caused me to register this evening.
I've seen users from all the way up in the northeast inquire about driving one back home (unless I'm mistaken), and yet you say 'probably too far' in this case to East, Tennessee.
Why is that?
zeke6785 06-18-2011, 04:46 PM Read the whole thread and killed half a day at work. I really would like to get one of these. Is there any way to find these closer to the East Coast cause shipping seems like it would be a hassle and alot of cash. Either way you gusy do some great work on these awesome old trucks. :grinpimp:
