Redneck Ram will rebuild your current box, supposedly with stouter parts, tap it for hydro assist, and include the lines for around $500. www.westtexasoffroad.com

do I have to run hydro afterwards?

No its just hydro assist. They tap your original box and then use the fluid in the existing steering system to operate a ram that assists in turning your big ole heavy tires. Check out this link. Lot of good info and a review of the redneck ram setup. I will be going this route very soon myself.

I have seen that before, but my truck is stock and it has a cummins in it so I wanted a beefier box with out the whole system. So once they rebuild the box it can be used as normal, you have to run a simular hydro system.

the hydro assist takes a lot of stress off of your box and the frame where the box attaches. You can use it as a normal box without the ram (as long as you plugged the tapped holes) but why would you not run the ram? It doesnt take anything away from street driving.

Whats your beef with running the ram? Its not like it kills your pavement pounding.:flipoff2:

this isnt for my off road rig its for my DD tow rig. So all I need is a better than stock box that isn't going to cost 1K. No problem with the ram just not into spending that much when a beefier box would be fine.

Its anywhere from 5-600 dollars complete. It will make your pos box last longer and you wont have to even try when turning the tires.

If your steering is shot then it will still be shot after putting one of those braces on.
they cure nothing. they only prevent premature wear of a stock steering box. If a beefier box is used then the brace isnt needed. On the second gen trucks the brace can actually do more harm then good as the frame horns flex against each other and put pressure on the sector shaft.

thx for the other links though

I have to disagree... My box was wore out before I put the DSS on and now it is much tighter.. It still has slop, but not near as bad as before.. Search TDR1.com , and Compdiesel.com for more info.. :smokin:

you can disagree all you want. but if you have crap steering then you still have crap steering when the brace is added. sorry but the brace should not be used to FIX steering.

I dont need to look at comp D or anywhere else I have been making and fixing dodge steering for 11 years now and am a member of many diesel and offroad sites. this brace isnt new. I had one and got rid of it after 3 leaking steering boxes. Didnt have a leaky box after that and didnt notice any steering difference after it was off.

I see just as many bad/mixed reviews on the brace as I see good reviews.
There are better steering upgrades than the brace. much better.

If you read , PSC doesnt make a box anymore for 94 up dodges, which was the best box replacement. throught the years AGR had some bad dealings.
I knew of redneck ram but I thought they were more expensive.

So I figured I would see if there was any other options. Because I would like to fix my steering instead of adding a bandaid (brace)

I have also read many bad reviews on the PSC box aswell.. PSC has not been selling boxes for months now... Did I not post two other options? I was suggesting the DSS as well, I have had good luck with it.. Many folks have had good luck with the Cardone boxes form orielly.. I have also read that a steering box off of a chevy is the same... Good luck on your quest to better steering.. Have you upgraded your drag link to the 3rd gen?

I break a '98 GM 3500 box with the DSS. My stock box failed at about 40k miles with 35"s and no brace.

I then went to a Redneck Ram (I highly recommend West Texas Offroad), I did break one sector shaft, but I have no idea why? I may have hit it on a rock? Anyway I am running their Stage III kit, box, big ram, and pump upgrade. $700 or so.... 42"s on a 7000 lb rig that is wheeled.

Not sure I am sold on the DSS either, but I did bend mine before the box failed so I would say user failure.

I don't have a good answer, I think these trucks are too hard to steer, the hydro assist really seems to reduce pressure on the box.

Get a new box from anywhere, send it to West Texas Offroad and have them tap it for hydro assist, buy their assist kit. Buy the DSS brace, install all 3 pieces onto the truck and call it done. Or try the chevy box from PSC http://www.pscmotorsports.com/sg841mr-8802-gm-fullsize-truck-cyl-assist-gear-p-113.html
