My buddy sheared half of the teeth off the ring gear. He runs 35" claws, np 205, and a FI 350. When it happened he was in front wheel drive at full throtle trying to get it to spin around.

sheared teeth off. 360 dodge motor, 4500# jeep, 38 sx's and no crawl ratio worth talking about in 3rd gear with the trigger pulled. i'd go 5.38's, the 5.89's will break ;)

DSI---Very few actually run Dana 44 5.89's so let the heresay begin. I actually run them....over a year now. They are Dana. I have not been kind to them....I have snapped numerous axles and ears and sent nasty shock loads back to the ring/pinion...Have sheared the little teeth off of 2 Detroits because of those shock loads but the 5.89s still live. These are on my Yota flatbed ...just a 4 cylinder with 212:1 gearing on 36" TSLs....I use it for rockcrawling and around town driving....also sees the highway....just got back from the Labor Day thing in Moab and purred down the highway at 65 mph all the way. Another local here in Phoenix has the 5.89s also in his Yota and no breakage....that was Dan Dunaway and he used it in a couple ARCA comps. Just as with anything, if you put a big enough tire on it and slam that clutch enough you will break it.

I'm running 5.89s in my diffs, 258ci, stock 5sp (whatever the fawk it is), d-300, 35 x 12.50's, not problems yet. But i am a reallly easy on the stupid pedal driver, little worried about them when i go to the t-18/38's/alloy shafts/ctms this winter but we will see.:D

No AH but it would be interesting to see a pic of the damaged ring and pinion.....

I blew 8 teeth off a 5.13 ring gear back in 1981. Small block Chevy, Edelbrock cross ram, two 650 holleys solid lifter cam, no rubber in drivetrain. Dialed it in at 9.310, missed third gear, went through the traps at 9.309. Next day, corked up the headers and pulled the slicks off. When I tried to drive back out of the garage, the vibrations were incredible. Broken teeth on a ring gear is something you will never forget.

Funny, I never knew anything bad had happened when it happened, but I shouldhave known something was up when the tach needle went all the way clockwise.

It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't broken out!
