My rebuilt 231 ran fine a month ago when we started it last (ongoing project), it ran great a few months ago when we broke in the motor and it ran on its own and even idled fine for over 30mins total run time.

The only thing diff is tried to start the tach wire fell against the manifold and sparked...So tested the coil and it was bad...Went and got a new accel HEI coil to use with my 8.8 wires...

Plugged it all in, i'm getting plenty of fuel, great spark, timing is dead on (pulled capped, pulled #1 spark and made sure that #1 piston was TDC with timing marks and it is)...checked spark with plug/wire against block and got good spark jump
Cranked and cranked and cranked and cranked and the SOB won't start...

Let it sit for a few hours due to it probably being flooded..., tried it again and it won't start...

Only thing different is the Batt wire for the HEI coil runs to a 30A relay instead of directly to the battery like it did before.

So i'm letting it sit over-night with the plugs out to let it all dry out really good...hopefully it will start tommorow, any ideas on other items to check???

Good spark, good ground, power to the coil, new plugs/wires/coil, carb is good, stuck it on another truck and it fired right up...(4bbl quadrajet)...any suggestions will be great.

GETTING GAS FOR SURE??
GETTING SPARK FOR SURE??

YOU KNOW THAT SO CHECK THE TIMING.......

PULL THE NUMBER ONE PLUG....
DISCONEECT THE COIL WIRE.....
PUT YOUR FINGER OVER THE PLUG HOLE.......
NOW TURN MOTOR OVER TAPPING THE KEY TILL A POOF OF AIR COMES OUT...NOW YOUR AT TDC...CHECK THIS AGAINST THE TIMING MARK.....
NOW MAKE SURE THE ROTOR IS PIONTED AT THE ## 1 PLUG WIRE

MAKE SURE THE FIRING ORDER IS CORRECT ON THE CAP....

IF IT DOESNT START DO A COMPRESSION TEST....

IF YA GOT NO COMPRESSION DOUBLE CHECK THE ROCKER ADJUSTMENT

JUST A FEW THINGS TO CHECK

:D

timing is dead on (pulled capped, pulled #1 spark and made sure that #1 piston was TDC with timing marks and it is)...

Already did that

Firing order is correct (have a book)

It has ran before with nothing changed

Gas is good, came out of another toyota's tank that runs fine on it and its fueled another truck we bottle fed...

No rocker adjustment and the compression is fine, motor is newly rebuilt with 0 miles and 30-40mins run time on it.

try starting fluid, this should rule out no gas.
look in valve cover to make sure valves are moving(possible broken timing chain)
by the way what does it do when you try to start it, does it backfir, pop or anything else?

No backfire pop or anything like that...I believe i just flooded it big time with the bad coil...

We'll see how she fires in the morning, if at all...Soon as it starts I don't know if I will let it shut off! lol...

I'm going to try the starting fluid, just one short blast and crank it for a few and when it gets going the fuel pump will prime up by then and pump gas on its own, t his is my first carbed vehicle so i'm skiddish about flooding and such and I plan to go and fill a small can with new gas and some marvels mystery oil/fuel conditioner as well just to double check stuff...

So i'll try putting the plugs back in after drying out overnight
A short burst of starting fluid
New gas in a small can with some fuel conditioner/cleaner
and a good cross of the fingers and pep talk with the ole gal...

Wish me PBB luck lol...
