i have been considering buying either a diesel or 8.1 chevy but some unexpected finacial things happened and i decided to stick with my 6.0. I have seen where many of you have put chips on your 6.0 chevy gas engines and was wondering which ones your using. I am going to stick with my stock intake and i don't want to have to add anything to my transmission. i'm also hoping this will help my fuel economy, so if you have any info that can help send me to the right place i'd appreciate it. Thanks to any who respond.

The PCM is flashed tuned using a aftermarket handheld tuner or a tuner suite ie HPtuners or EFIlive.

Black Bear Tune, Hypertech, Superchips, or a local tuner. GOGGLE them!!!!

blah blah blah. Get HP tuners and be done with it. No need to buy a canned tune. HP tuners you can tune it everyday if you want and can make changes as you go. no ship it here ship it there crap. I'd NEVER buy a can tune. You can also look at LS1 Edit and EFI live, all are much better then anything mail order. Then you can make a custom tune for towing and one for everyday. You might also want to get a wide band just to tune with. If you really want to get the most out of a 6.0 motor.

But, not everyone has the skill or knowledge to use the tuning software. And, I doubt the original post has either.

You can fuck some shit up if you don't know what your doing.

Thanks to maontecarlo and sjp for answering my question with intelligence! Bo... my best friend and cousin are both mechanics, think i can find someone to help me program if i choose to go that route! I didn't know if a piggyback chip would work or what programmers would be available. Hence why i asked what kinds people are using! Again, thanks to the two of you who responded with some class!

Little more info... The PCM (engine computers) are flashed with the tune. They don't use chips or "piggybacks" anymore.

You plug your Laptop into the ODBII port and tune using the software.

You could go in with a couple of buddy's, that have late model GM trucks and split the cost of the tuning software. HPtuners runs $350 for one and you can buy more credits for your buddy's to help with the costs and split it with them.

Its pretty easy if you read up on it. But, i wouldn't let someone that hasn't ever done any tuning before do it. You can damage the engine. And you won't gain as much. Also to get the most you will want to use a wide band 02 senor when tuning.

Or you could just have the tune done by tuning company. You can send them you PCM or they will send you a tuner. Either way most times its done right and you will gain power easily. With out worry.

Black Bear tune doesn't have to be a canned tune. He also does cable-tuning

He does great tunes. If you wander over to gmfullsize.com damn near every member with a tune has gotten one from him and nobody has a bad thing to say.

At the very least give him a call and talk to him about your options. He can do whatever you want with the tune within the limits of the software and offers re-tuning for very cheap or free when you update parts IIRC.
