85 R'S Had black motors, 86 ones were gunmetal gray, and had the gears stamped on the side of the case, there were some other minor differences in the motors on the internal design, Iv'e heard the 85's benefit from a intake reed spacer more than the 86's do. the big changes in the r motor weren't till 87, when they went to the long rod design, 86 R had alot better rear axle carrier/swingarm design, much stronger. If I'm not mistaken a slight change was made to the fork rake/angle on the 86's I think it got longer. 86's also had different stickers, the wing on the tank had 250r written under it, and a 250r sticker on the front fender, also seats had diff graphics, 85 had 250r, 86 said ATC. No major changes but it's enough to help someone tell a diff in the two. I have a 86, either one is a great machine!

Excellent info. Thanks. Is the swingarm on the 85 something to be concerned about? Do a lot of the parts interchange?

ahhhh one of my favorite websites :) also try out http:www.3wheeler.org for alot of great trike info. One more diff was the headlight housing was somewhat different between the two years. I don't think that many of the parts will interchange between 85 and 86 rear ends, I think that the 85 is just not quite as good, that prob doesn't mean that it's pure crap, it might make a diff if someone was actively jumping one alot or something. The 87's were supposedly released in small numbers in canada, if anyone finds one give me a call and I'll be around to pick it up :flipoff2:
