I'm headed to Alaska in August to work in the bush for a year and I've started to look for a couple guns. I'll use them for big game (caribou, maybe bear and moose) and water foul. I'm pretty guntarted, I figure get them now and start learning with some people I know I can trust to teach me right.

I'm looking at a Remington 870 express, 3 1/2" mod choke, laminated stock for $350 new.

I'm also looking at a Weatherby 300 WSM, synthetic stock, it comes with a bushinelle 3x9? scope and case for $450.

Are these good guns and good prices?

Remington 870 is a good shotgun.

As far as weatherby, they are good, but go price ammo before you buy one.
Edit, never mind on that. I thought you were talking about a 300 wetherby, not a 300wsm

Even so, around 40-55 a box for 300WSM.

I'd recommend a .30-06, as it's probably going to be an easier caliber to obtain.

Really? I usually pay in the low 30's at academy for winchester silvertips.

That said, I think I would get either a .30-06 or a .308, or go up to maybe a .338 or .35 caliber.

Something like a 300 win mag would be easier/cheaper to find ammo. You could also go with the 338 win mag in the same Vanguard rifle for a little more knockdown power if you do go for moose/brown bear. I have the Vanguard in 300 win mag and like it very much.

The Vanguard 300WSM is the same weight/length as the 300 win. mag, so there is no advantage going with the short mag in that rifle. The 300 win mag will be easier to find ammo and have a bigger selection. Vanguard's are good rifles for the $$(made by howa), but also look at the new ruger's in that price range that have the flat SS matt finish and adjustable triggers ;).

REALLY????

I priced some 300 WSM at Academy, and the price was no where close to $35.00. That being written, I'm not a big fan of the silvertips though, so I wasn't looking at them.
