Damn. Not really surprised though, many safes are nothing more than over sized lock boxes. They keep the general rif-raff out, but not much else. I'm glad that guy had cellular backup for his alarm, otherwise he might have been SOL. I need to look into it.

Wish the op would come back and update. His comment that it wasn't random is interesting.

I know my alarm system is one where the line gets cut it goes off.

I aslways figured the safes are nothing more then to keep items away from kids and make it harder for stuff to just walk off

Reading through the thread, it looks like the cheap safe did the job and delayed the thieves long enough so that the cops caught them in the act.

What kind of protection do you think you get for <$600?

I have spent an assload on cameras, dvrs, alarm, sesnors, etc.etc. I get an e-mail to my phone when someone drivers in my driveway or opens my gate. Then I can pull up the cameras to check who is coming or going.

Like posted above, my guns are locked up to protect them from people who might discharge them on accident. and to slow them down a bit. My home is where all my security is at.

Did you install this system from a 'kit' or ???

I'd like to have something to email pics to my phone when a vehicle enters.

I had a local company come do it. They do have plenty of kits available though. NICE ONES even. I just didn't have the time to do it the right way so I had to contract it out.

A safe only stops kids, the dumb and the lazy. If I wanted in a safe I would be in it. Portable oxy/act setup and I am in about anything shortly. I know that what I put in the safe is only "safe" from the kids, the lazy and the dumb...the random person breaking into the house. A pro will be in and gone before anyone knows....

I think its hilarious the comment about police response time. Twenty five minutes seems fast to me. I can have a car wreck in the middle of a town and it take that long for a cop to show....let alone a house somewhere.

In my neighborhood, a decent one FWIW, I would just cut through a car garage door of the house with the most lights on....a sure sign no one is home....and take my time looking :D

Everyone needs to understand that this guy didn't have a "safe". It was a "residential security container".

BIG difference between a $600 residential security container and a $2000 safe.

It did its job....it slowed the thieves down.

The last gun show had a display by a safe manufacturer of an actual safe that was broken into while the owners were out of town. Thieves went after it with crowbars and did get in. The bolts were bent and the door was pretty messed up. Real eye opener.

I figure my safe is for keeping kids out and honest people honest. I have no illusions about it stopping a professional. Someday I will be able to afford a better safe but not in the cards right now.

the maker of these safes is in our rifle club. they are some bad ass safes. they are not cheap but i have no doubt they are higher quality and safer than the majority of safes out there.

That's why i dont have a safe. I have one of those big cheap 14gauge corner boxes... if you're not going to spend $1500+ you may as well spend $200 and go with the "slows 'em down" mentality. I also only keep the cheap stuff in the box. The family heirloom stuff is loaded and proped up behind behind doors as it should be.

One way around (or more accuraltely - to further delay) that particular issue is to make sure the safe you purchase has a double step that goes in deeper so it's not as easy to get a prying device behind the lip.

I've got a Stack-On safe and it is adequate enough for my needs. If someone wants them bad enough they can have them, That's what insurance is for. I've done enough to protect them.

If it wasn't for my daughter I probably wouldn't even bother with a safe.

Find me a 2000 dollar safe and I'll buy one. To buy a safe vs. an RSC you're going to be in the 4k range.

I just picked up a liberty timber ridge for 1000 bucks, nothing is unstealable if some one wants it they will get it, just got to make them work for it a little bit!

Makes me glad I live where I do. I had a non-emergency just a question call to the local PD and they had a car to my house in 4 minutes.

You're probably right...I just threw a number out there but my point was just to state that the guy who got robbed didn't have a safe.

And I am only making the point that "safes" are very expensive. Almost every safe on the markt under four grand is an RSC and the difference between a top of the line RSC and a "safe" is very little. RSC's aren't all bad and something is still better than nothing.

I got a full size security safe, lined with 3" of concrete, double swing out doors and hardened door pins for $200

I'm going to be in the market for a safe soon as I have my first child on the way. My basic requirement is that it be big enough for what I have plus a few more and that it be fire resistant for around 60 minutes. I want to be able to use the safe for valuables other than firearms.

Most of the robberies that I've heard of around here were by tweakers or other general riff-raff. Not by organized professional thieves. They usually try to get in and out quickly with maximum cash. I figure my xbox and laptop would be first to go followed by my tools and my tv if they could manage it. Stuff in a locked safe would be too much trouble for someone wanting a quick buck.

My grandparents-in-law were broken into. He had two guns in a gun case and the thieves took his nice shotgun but left his hunting rifle laying in their living room for some reason and left a lot of valuables.

That being said, my dad's manufacturing plant was broken into about 20 years ago. It was a former employee who broke in. They used the oxy/acet rig from the shop to cut into the antique safe in the office where all the computer and financial stuff was kept. There were only a few little antiques in it but no cash or anything of value. They must've spent hours there chipping through the concrete to get in. The sad thing is that they tore up a really sweet antique safe that's been in the family for a long time.

You could plainly see what was broken into was not really a safe. I always keep my eyes open for big commercial safes. It is false advertising to claim anything burgulary proof, only burgulray resistant. Nothing is for sure really safe. My friend has a pepper gas system hooked to his safe, never seen it, he moved to Montana but it sounds like a good deterent. It fills the room with pepper gas of some sort. Hate to forget to disarm that settup. The big old Moslers are pretty tough, but yes a cutting torch is hard to stop. Slowwing down a thief is the best thing you can do. Or you can hide all your guns in a secret spot, buy the big Sams club junk safe and load it with some bricks to keep them busy. I tell people to buy a safe just big enough for one person to carry and don't put anything in it. Keeps them busy moving it and trying to get in.
My only break in was at my office. I had a filing cabinet with a drawer that wouldn't open. The thieves spent a bunch of time getting it open. It works perfect to this day. It is easier to use now, we used to put stuff in there by opening the drawer above it and reaching in. Dumb fucks couldn't figure that out.

Having a friend that works at Diebold, I have learned a few things about safes. Good safes are burn rated with torches.
They require a set amount of time with a torch to get into it.

The door on a good safe is the strongest part. If you cut the hinges, the door will not come off with out a hoist.

i just got off the phone with vinnie, the owner of invincible safes. he called to talk about some other things but while on the phone i asked him about how secure most "safes" are. he told me how they are getting into most safes and that it takes less than 2 minutes if they know where to drill. this has me thinking about reinforcing mine.

I am with you here.

My primary security system has four legs times 4 and I know you can't get past them as long as they are alive. I have a wired security system w/cell back up also but I don't depend on it. I know I can depend on well trained and well fed dogs.

All safes have a weakness to the well trained thief-the key is to not give them enough time to get the job done.

I would by another watch dog before I spent any more $ on a safe.

I'd bet a $6 raw steak would do it.

Depends... As an auditory alert, they would have already let me know well before you had a chance to get them that steak. And the fact is - it's another deterrent that tells thieves to move on to an easier mark.
