I bought a truck with lift kit and big wheels. I have no idea if there is different gears on it or even different axles. Its extreme leafspring lift on 99 f150.

Prolly the easiest way, although not most accurate, would be to jack up one rear wheel, put the truck in neutral, and make a mark on a wheel and driveshaft. Rotate driveshaft. If it takes 4.1 rotations of driveshaft to turn the wheel 1 rotation....you have a 4.10 gearset.

If it is not posi and he only turns one tire he needs to go two revolutions. If it is posi then only one, and you need to jack up both rears / fronts.

best way is to simply pop the diff cover and see what is stamped on the ring gear.

seems like easy enough. Do I have to worry about jacking up the car or worry about anything falling out once I unbolt cover?

... Do I have to worry about anything falling out once I unbolt cover?

oil will fall out.

You can also divide the amount of ring gear teeth by pinion teeth to get the ratio...

jack it up so you can spin the tires, rotating the ring gear, the stamp might not be visable, and the only thing that will fall out (hopefully) is gear oil

I have tried this a couple times, and I find it nearly impossible to see the pinion on some axles. It is MUCH easier to just find the ring gear stamp. What is so challenging about that?

Perhaps it should be added to NOT GET THE GEAR OIL ON YOU!!!!!
