I'm working on calling shennanigans on a boneyard for trying to rip me off here.

Can someone tell me if there is a physical difference (aside from possibly gearing or posi) between these two rearends?

1979 F250 4x2 d60 rear

1979 F250 4x4 d60 rear

Is the 4x2 semi float and the 4x4 full float? That's all I can think of.

No difference that I can find so far. The Semi-Floating D-60 did NOT appear until 1980.

unless the spring purches are located (rotated) differently then the axles for a 1979 4x2 and a 4x4 should be the same.

Ahhh, that makes sense ... about the perches (pinion angle).

Here's the details. The boneyard is telling me $400 for a 4x4 axle. But after doing some searching through their QRP database, I see that they have a couple of 4x2 axles in stock for $200.

Cory, thanks for the info. I'm gonna' go scope out what they supposedly have tomorrow.

But is that difference due to 2wd vs 4wd or is it due to 76 vs. 79 ?

Your personal hygiene aside:eek:  there is a definete difference between '76 and '79 because in 77 1/2 the frame was changed. this changed the distance between the spring perches on the rears only. As for 4x2 and 4x4 spring perch width I don't know. Shafts are the same length though for 1979.

I believe it was a difference because of 2wd vs 4wd. It could also be a difference because of year.

Either way, if the 60 has 2.5" or 3" drums you will be ok. It's the ones with 2" drums that you need to avoid at all costs.

That's the kind of bare-bones, stripped down tech I like.
