Would there be a problem running a Maxxis Classic WWW on the front and a Mezteler 880 WWW on the rear of my bike? I have maxxis classics on it now (front and rear) and I wanted the same, but I can't find one in the rear size. I can easily get the metzeler 880 for the rear .
I have read that you shouldn't mix bias ply with radial etc. and I can't find any info telling me whether one is bias-ply and one radial, so what say you, PBB? Would you run it?

Yeah go for it, I'm running a pirelli diablo up front and a bridgestone battleaxe in the back. No reason not to.
I have read that you shouldn't mix bias ply with radial etc.
I'd be interested where this kind of info comes from.. sounds like an old wives tale to me.

Could be, I read it on a Motorcycle forum. I also read that if you do mix the types, to use a bias-ply on the rear and the radial on the front, but I don't know why?
I know it doesnt make a difference on my V-rod, but on my sportbikes I can tell when I dont have matching tires front and rear. I dont know that it matters from bias to radial, but from brand to brand they act differently, but only when put in a high performance/high traction situation. This is only personal information, and I have no scientific backing, but its my .02 for what its worth.

The general idea is to keep the characteristics of the tires matching. You don't want mismatched profiles or rubber compounds on the street. I would assume that the same applies to dirt although different attributes probably come into play (tread pattern & depth). Usually, the only way to guarantee this is to use a matched set from the same manufacturer. I know that every time I put a new set on my Valk that there is a HUGE difference in the handling and behavior of the bike.
