: Anyone running Volvo C303 Axles? Attn: evilfij
spudzz 09-04-2002, 12:45 AM I would really like to know more about these axles, and I have read ever single thread here that I could find... hours of searching! :D I know all about Mog portals and I don't want them, not for this anyway. I know about extremeaxles, I don't want those either... importing seems way cheaper! I do know someone that can do some leg work for me in Europe but will not chase all over for these, if I can find `em they will handle the transaction for me.
I want to know how much work they were to put in, any custom fab work needed?
What have you done for springs, coil or leaf?
What about disc brakes... anyone do this? Are these axles made by spicer and does Dana 60 stuff work?
Break any birfs? :(
And where can I find more pics and build up websites about these axles.
I'm looking for some way to find a set to stick these under a Toy, I know it will take time and $$$ to find them. Two years to find your set evilfij? Also has anyone ever gotten a reply from the British company that bought all of the stuff fro the Swedish army to seel off? Three emails to them now over the last week and a bit and still no reply.
BTW... if Santa Cluase reads this BB I want a complete TGB 11 too :D :p

spudzz 09-04-2002, 09:41 AM Fawk that just looks sweet... :D
Thanks for the post Magnus, looking forward to seeing more pics and reading about the build up. I finnaly got an answer from J.T. Leavesley today. The only things they have for sale are BV-206's. I did figure out also that the C304 is the one I wanna get my hands on as a complete unit. That is one nice looking 6x6, would make for a great ride, offroader or even tow rig.
sweden 09-04-2002, 09:54 AM A scan from a vehicle catalog covering all light duty vehicles used by the swedish army.
Here's the C303 (Facts in swedish and mm) (http://multimedia.campus.luth.se/magnus/tgb11.jpg)
spudzz 09-04-2002, 10:43 AM Gezzzz I hafta learn French and German for my new job and now it looks like I can add Swedish to the list! Oh well I know what I know which one I'll be learning first that's for sure! I think all I'll need to know is "do you have this?" and "Ok I'll take it... how much!". :D
Anyone have one of these with a set of 303 axles sitting in the back they wanna sell me?

Some good news about volvo portals. I talked to a guy that have a C303 and he said that you can buy spare parts from the local Volvo trucks parts dealer, at least in Sweden. Maybe it's possible to do the same in USA and let them order it from Sweden.
The axels on the C304 is harder to get and using a 6x6 as a tow rig is not that good cause it only got 120 hp and some say that driving it on highway is like sitting in a tumbler drier.

Might be better to talk with a truck dealer in Sweden, I called my local Volvo dealer and all I got was alot of "what are you looking for??" and "I've never heard of that before..." basically the impression I got from the call was, if it's not in our inventory go away. Good to know about parts being available from a Swedish dealer though... thanks for the info. No wait... make that.
Tack så mycket
Your local volvo car dealer wont know anything about C303 if that is what you called.

Called a Volvo truck dealer.
spudzz 09-04-2002, 10:56 PM No one has these?
sweden 09-05-2002, 03:48 PM The portal flatfender in an earlier post have axles from a burnt-out 6x6 -The front was ok, but the rears was toast. He bought all seals/bearings/and so on for the whole rear axle. He said he paid ~300$ for the lot.
He bought it at a local volvo dealer (who both sells/services cars & trucks)
-Hell i even think you can get axle shafts for 50:s old military volvos. -But you have to pay up to get the goods. :)

evilfij 09-05-2002, 08:22 PM Sorry I missed this post.
Yes I have them and the last piece in my puzzle is getting the rear spring mounts welded on and getting that axle mounted.
It is SUA, stock rover springs, rear shocks are 8in travel fronts I have not quite figured out yet but it won't be anything spectacular. I am all about simple. "Bolt on" Ron :)
Call Vince, he can get the axles. Just make sure you have the cash before you bug him or he will run my ass over when he gets the 6x6 pinz straitened up.

evilfij 09-05-2002, 08:39 PM ok since I have a minute.
There are no dana parts in them. The dana stuff is in the earlier non portal laplander axles which are dana 44 clones made by salisbury. This is a confusing point.
The C304 axles are usually the "slow" gears while as the C303s are usually the "fast" gears (this is what I have and if you plan to drive it what you want)
Stock they are SUA front and SOA rear with track bars of angle iron with bushings.
The springs are fairly soft (for something designed to carry a dozen troops) and are fairly long. They are 3in wide. I would not reuse them but I suppose you could and maybe pull some leaves.
The ones I got are covered in about 1/4in of waxyoil so there is almost no rust, but they are ugly and dirty.
The cases are beefy. The housing is pretty much square and the diff cover is very thick (1/4in at least). The wheels cover the portal assembly so risk of damage there is limited (very neat design)
Brake pipes are the same as a land rover what ever that is (ironically the same on my 59 as on my 96 rovers). There are two pipes to each front wheel which link in the center of the axle so you only have two front circuits. In the back there is one to each wheel which I have joined with a T-piece.
Tie rod and drag link are huge. Make sure to get the drag link as it has a unique end on it which is sort of bent, also the drag link mounts to the tie rod so you really want both and then cut and shunt the drag link to fit your steering. Rod ends are huge too.
Ron
PS yes two years
spudzz 09-05-2002, 08:51 PM Great to here your close to finishing, I'm looking forward to hearing more and seeing some pics too. I hope you took lots of the swap, either way post when your done.
I had a good long look over Vinces' site and I think he is the man I'll be calling for the axles. I don't think I'll be able to find a C304 real soon so I'll be making two purchases instead of one. I wanted to maybe get them both at the same time and import to save some $$$. T J Leavesley in England sounds like they are going to ask an arm and a leg for what they practically got for free. 2.5m for something like 2500 vehicles and lots of equipment too. Easy to understand why the Swedes are pissed...
I won't get ya run over dood, promise. It looks like the Pinz did better then Vince did though... crushed foot and banged up pretty good from what I understand, next year!
sweden 09-06-2002, 07:57 AM There's an 8x8 Laplander too (http://multimedia.campus.luth.se/offroad/tgb20_8x8.jpg)
But they built only 1 prototype, and after ruling it out as being to complex they scrapped it. (Rumors are they made driven trailers).
Another portal flatfender sightning (http://multimedia.campus.luth.se/offroad/portal_willys_small.jpg) (From swedish 4x4 mag) -Some 80's trailreport :)
Anyway, gonna scan what i find and put it up for you to enjoy!

spudzz 09-06-2002, 10:22 AM More great pics, thanks Magnus. :D
I had seen the 8x8 and right away I though what a camping rig that would make!

That is some nice looking clearance under that flatfender and it looks like it's spring over axle too. I would have thought that any portal axle would need to be spring under to handle the added torque, still more to learn. I've found a few good sites for the Valp lots of info, but still not much on the 304. It's even rarer then the 303 but if I keep looking I'm sure I'll find something. Right now I almost think I'm more intrested in finding a 304 then I am in getting the 303 axles for my toyota. It looks like Vince at real4x4 is going to be importing the 303 so maybe he will find a source for the 304 too.
Tack så mycket
