: sill re-inforcement/slider?

Has anyone thought of doing a simple sill re-inforcement buy welding on a section of 3/16 or 1/4 inch tube directly to the sill? This could also double as an air tank.

On a vehicle like mine, where I am going to always be on limitied clearance (no 35's in my future), and doesn't do 9 or 10 rated trails would this make sense?

I am thinking that I would make them slightly lower than the plastic pos, and leave the stock for stealth/looks.

(now ducking and running for cover)

Have you read this?

Yes.

I was thinking that using the 3-4" flat portion of the sill would provide better pressure "spread". The vertical sill protector doesn't seem to be needed for what I am thinking. I am thinking that running 4-6 inch welds (or along the whole thing) would be enough. Also, vertical plate will not distribute the force as well as box section. Right?

Personally my sslls were rotted to hell, so I slid a piece of 2"x4" 3/16" thick tube int the sill for re-inforcement and to use as a slider. I havn't had any problems with it so far, and I can easily jack the truck off it with the door open.

Did you weld directly to the frame side of the sill? That is what I was thinking.

If your going to weld directly to the sill, I would first reinforce the sill with some 65x65x5mm angle iron. This section wraps around the sill very nicely - you just use three seperate pieces to get around the pillars. Once you got that stitched on there you can weld on to it anyway you like.

Im my buisness partners rangie and also my rangie ute we used this section on the sill to mount the sliders. Except our sliders arnt welded on they are Tek screwed on (self drilling/self tapping screws). We got screws on the bottom surface and also the side surface and about a screw every 4inches which works well if your sills arnt rusty.

Ill take a pic today and post it.

We welded wherever we could find metal that would take a bead. We centered most of the welds around the front and rear, and along with near the pillar between the doors.

If I ever start wheeling it heavily I will make some more beefy attachments to the frame, and somee sort of actual slider on the outside to protect the doors more, but for a daily driver/ocassional wheeling rig they work great.
