: who has slotted/drilled rotors for 80s?
Other than MAF (they dont get a dime >:( I have found all types of stuff on disc brakes australia (dba), but I know there is a company in the northwest that makes/sells slotted or drilled rotors for my 80 for a good price ($125). I have found them before, but I cant for the life of me find them today. Anyone have the link for that company. Powerslot makes slotted rotors for the front for $125, and DBA has slotted/drilled for $180 (ft) and $160 (rr) ouch. Thanks in advance,
RIcko.
I posted this on CCOT and they too are slow
Eskimo 09-04-2002, 10:18 AM Ummm.. why?
Drilled rotors crack, and normally cannot be turned. (or they crack before they can be turned)
Slotted rotors can help with gas dissapation when you're really on the brakes, but WTF are you doing with a 80 to warrant hi-po rotors?
Just driving that big fucker will warp the rotors. I have talked to lots of guys that say the factory rotors warp and will warp again real soon after you have them turned. Plus factory braking on the 80 sucks. I would like at least slotted to help slow the bastard down.

Eskimo 09-04-2002, 11:48 AM True... the 80 is heavy.
what will warp rotors quickly is to come to a complete stop, and keep your foot on the brake. The heat bleeds off the rotor, but where the pads are stays hot.
slotted and drilled rotors don't prevent warping.. they help gases escape from between the pad and the rotor under hard hot braking. The gases prevent good pad contact.
slotted rotors may help your braking, if it "sucks" as bad as you say... Mind you, you'll go through brake pads MUCH faster than normal... around 4x as fast.
This isn't coming from crap I've read on the net... real-world experience. (SCCA Honda CRX and SCCA/track day Audi quattro)
I was still up in the air about the drilled. I figured the Drilled would bleed off heat better due to the increased surface area. But I want something that is not going to warp (I think the factory rotors are prone to it) and have increased stopping power. I dont mind changing out pads, it is easy, but pulling the rotors is a PITA. The other thing that kills the braking on the 80 is the all-wheel drive and the auto. I hate autos, you hit the brakes and the fockin' tranny keeps on pushing, what I wouldnt give for a 5spd and selectable 4wd.
SO, do you know any place that has them or not?:flipoff2:

Eskimo 09-04-2002, 12:34 PM No, to answer your question, I don't know where you can get a set.
Drilled and slotted rotors actually have LESS surface area by the way.
What I'm telling ya is this: slotted rotors won't prevent warping, and you're gonna pay quite a bit more for slotted than another set of OEM style ones.

I believe this is where the the 80scool (80 series Yahoo group) guys did a group buy earlier this year. Huge, ongoing debate on whether or not they are worth it...I haven't followed it all but if your a Yahoo member you can search their archive :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:

I signed up for this? This is really going to cut into my work flow... I do like the smilies.:D
See ya,
Brian
By more surface area, I meant total exposed metal to the environment (cooling) surface area, not pad contact suface. Obviously if you have air where there was once metal against the pads, you have less contact area. I think that the something about the OEM rotors (ie the alloy, manufactuer, something inherent of the design) makes them prone to warpage. If you had an OEM rotor that was slotted it would most likely not help with warpage, but a aftermarket slotted rotor may not warp because of a different factor. Yes, they are brake rotors and may not be that different, but everyone I have talked to says the OEMs will warp real quick after you turn them. And as far as price the OEMs are not much cheaper than the powerslots ($100 VS $125)

FJ4ZROX 09-06-2002, 09:55 AM FWIW - I am running drilled and slotted DBA rotors on my FZJ80. I needed to upgrade my brakes and get extended lines and the prices MAF had were WAY lower than anyone else had. I have not experienced any problems with catching stones in the drilled holes and damaging the pads (one of the bigger potential problems noted). They have only been on my truck for about 2 months and have been on several trails. I figure for the price of the kit, I can try these out and swap to slotted only if I have any problems in the future.
Just my $0.02

For the record, 80's eat rotors and pads like they're made of butter.
