: any way to fit 35" on a XJ with no lift?
GRMhick 09-04-2002, 11:36 AM Well, i found an Xj, and am going to go look at it. only thing is that it is stock, and i will be broke after buying it. BUt i do have some 35" mt/r's on 15x8's on my dodge that i can use when i wheel it. This is a 4 door cherokee. Now is it possiable to cut the hell out of it and make it fit without doing anything else, or will i need to move the rear axle back so it doesent hit the door. Will it work?
thanks
Garrett
JohnBuuu 09-04-2002, 11:42 AM highly doubtful.
even with a shitload of trimmiing, youll need at least 4-5in to make it happen. you wont need to move the rear axle back until you get to 37-38s though.

big4294x4 09-04-2002, 11:42 AM No
big4294x4 09-04-2002, 11:46 AM Possibly in the front if you add huge bumpstops and cut the shit out of the fenders and add rims w/ like 3" of backspacing. But in the rear. You could cut out the entire fender well and cut the body, but since this is a unibody rig, you will be compromising strength by cutting to far as the body seem opens up if you cut more than like an inch in a half. If you have the skills to weld in an entire new fenderwell and close up the seem in the body, then sure.

your 96 dodge should be a 5-5.5 bolt pattern?
Cherokee is 5-4.5 rims wont fit!!
Id do 4in of Bs or less for the 35s to preven rubbing on lower control arm.
you will need to cut and reweld the body as described above. I drove my friends xj around the block, no lift no trimming with 32s, add bumpstops, trim or remove all possable metal, and take pics to show us. it would be sweet!!!!!!
with 35s youll also need to regear the 3.55 gears youll probibly have will suck, so with those gears, the 35s might be a performance down-grade but I say do it....

B.A.R.K 09-04-2002, 04:22 PM anything is possible, i dont think it would be easy to relocate any necessitys on the front inner fender(if you trim that far up) you would be cutting mucho mucho metal away and ruining it's integrity, if you trim to fit 35's in the rear i am pretty sure that your tires will be in the cab with you , but hey if it is just a trail rig.....chop the whole thing to pieces
manhattanjeep 09-04-2002, 07:26 PM If you have access to a welder and some metal, then I would fab up some of your own ACOS. A buddy is doing this for a cherokee right now. It is still in the works, but I will let you know how it turns out. Trim a whole lotta metal from the fenders, and reweld the pinch seams and molded supports. Wheel it! You will still sit fairly low at the rockers, but on XJ's things are tucked away fairly well. Let us know how things turn out.
SMART ASS 09-04-2002, 07:46 PM teke the xj unibody and plant it awn the dodge chaseee :flipoff2:
Weasel 09-04-2002, 09:00 PM edited: looks like you got it figured out.
borton 09-04-2002, 09:26 PM sure its possible, I just cut a stock xj to fit 33 ssr's on 10" wheels, at full stuff the front tires only hit the fire wall when turned, but nothing else, so add some bumps stops and the front may work. the rear on the other hand, you'll have to cut the wheel well completly out and build a bigger one, with the edge of the wheel well at the door, good luck.
GRMhick 09-05-2002, 12:46 AM Hmm, well, this cherokee has a factory d44. and the tires are off of my 77 dodge... and in the 70's dodges had 5 on 4.5, not the 96 with has 5 on 5.5.. both of those truck have 3.55 gears.. 77 with the 35", and the 96 with 33". SO i know what 3.55 gears and big tires fell like, but with an auto, it is OK (just never take it out of low range). I have also been lookin into just getting a teraflex 1.5" budget lift kit, and cutting like a mad man, and i can only admagine what the COG woudl be like.. i think it would kick major ass. And yes, the metal shop (south bay metal) is about 10 min from my house, and i have a nice welder (thought a little big at 315 amps  ) that will weld up the metal if i am careful and quick. Hopefully i can go look at the cherokee in a couple of days to see how it looks to do... just weld up the rear and i woudl be set for almost any trial around... maybe rock sliders too... :flipoff2:

Taso Stambolis 09-05-2002, 01:20 AM I have a pic of a Grand Cherokee on 38s with it cut to hell with giant fender flares. Too bad I can't add an attachment to show everyone :emb4:

borton 09-05-2002, 08:23 AM you will need a wheel well something like this, but taller, and bumpstops
Weasel 09-05-2002, 08:33 AM ahum. sorry for my outburst. Looking to be a cool project now.

B.A.R.K 09-05-2002, 10:06 PM how about some rear pics of the XJ on 33's
ashmanjeepXJ 09-06-2002, 10:04 AM I like the "Hero"
My "cherokee" fell off so I think the "F350 pioneer" will suit it well.

haven't gone there yet, no time and no sheet metal to put it back together.

No time? Didnt you build you XMJ in like 8mo and all!!!!
It will be nice to see when you get the rear done.

CheapXJ 09-06-2002, 10:18 PM I just did a limited amount of trimming on my XJ, It would probably clear 31's w/o lift. 33's would definitely rub (15X8's w/ 4" backspacing).
It will be enough to clear them with a 3" lift though (except for the rear, gotta trim a little more, i just notched the pinch seam and beat it flat against the wheelwell with a BFH)
so far so good. didn't take any detail pics of the trimming. I'm gonna be away from my XJ for about 9 months, so they were just little momentos to help me cope with withdrawal.
B.A.R.K 09-06-2002, 10:29 PM hey Brent, did you ever sell the XMJ, if you did i hope you got a shit load because that has to be one of the sweetest custom rigs i have ever seen, do you have a link to some pics
