: I want to build a chevy. I need some tips.
88Burby 05-02-2009, 12:38 AM So, I want to build a truck. It has to be durable, has to be able to make it over anything in its way (smaller rocks, mud, dirt, ruble/debris) Im looking to make it into what you may call a, miniature urban assault vehicle. Functional interior to be made into some sort of mobile command center, for lack of more appropriate terminology.
There will be chromoly tubing around the body.
The vehicles Im questiong to make into my UAV,
either an old hard body suburban/crew cab (73-91), or possibly my current daily driver (89 cheyenne single cab long bed 4x4 LD 3/4 ton, or, heavy halfer as it is more widely known in the offroad world). I need a selectible locker, I need communication capabilities within the cab, as well as anything else you could possibly need in the middle of some sort of "natural" disaster or other event.
I need the ability to carry spare parts, straps/chains, fluids, tools, axles (unless I find 1 ton truck to build with a full floater) I need lots of lighting, a decent winch with onboard air compressor capabilities, swing away tire carrier, etc etc. Roof rack with high lift (custom made, tied into body tubing), and Ill top it off with 5:13:1 gears, built transmission and engine, other utilities added to the vehicle. I know this may seem weird to some of you who suspect me to be incopitent with my prior post of the suburban and the 73, but I assure you this build will be done right, and done with high functionality.
So if any of you have any ideas, links, design ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
The cab "Command center" is very important to this project. Will have laptop stand with bracket, high powered cb radio, spot light on the hood/roof, etc etc. I cannot stress enough how important it is for this build.
Thanks to everyone who may reply with a serious posting.
chevyforlife502 05-02-2009, 03:47 AM A 73 to 87 K20 or 30 would be ideal because of there heavier axles. If your planning on running a stock motor for a wile and want EFI would go with the 87 K20 or 30.
blazerboy85 05-02-2009, 04:19 AM its seems like you have all your shit lined up so im not really sure what your asking us to add to the equation but if you have the 89 available already id use that and just pick up some tons for it (if it doesnt already have a full float out back otherwise just a 60) and then i think possibly wheel base shortening and definetly a bob would be in question.
edit: or rip the cab off your longbed and put a crew cab on your frame? :edit:
Overdosed 05-02-2009, 05:21 PM What the fuck
The ability to carry spare axles? Unless you buy one tons?
I have seen one tons break..
Mobile command center?
Urban assault vehicle?
Unless you mount a .50 on the top of that burby your a tinfoil hat wearing faggot.
Do you have some sort of a tip off of a zombie invasion the rest of us should know about? WHAT WILL THIS TRUCK BE USED FOR. It is kinda hard to tell you what you might want/need if we dont even know what your going for. The ability to climb pebbles from old asphault, go through muddy puddles on the shoulder of the freeway and "debris" from broken ford parts can be had on any stock truck. A 2-4 inch lift and 35 inch tires will get any chevy through moderate trails.
Arent you the guy that keeps scraping projects because a water pump goes out.. missing wire to the ignition ect ect...
LegendKiller89 05-02-2009, 07:20 PM Dude seriously is ''mobile command center'' and ''urban assault vehicle'' code for something? Sorry I'm just lost. :skull:
spidr 05-02-2009, 10:28 PM Look, you've obviously done your research. I can tell.
You've gathered the most comon or coolest parts that every build seems to have.............
But come on.....a chromoly exo? Either you have more skills and money than everyone on here combined, or you took the search function to far.

Grumpy_old_fart 05-03-2009, 09:30 AM dude... the guys 12...

Yes.
:tinfoil hat: mobile command center for what?
Urban Assault Vehicle = Cruisin' the Mall:flipoff2:
Grumpy_old_fart 05-03-2009, 11:44 AM "mobile command center" means
stuck on a parking pylon and waiting for someone to rescue him while on the cell phone..

Gutter Runner 05-03-2009, 09:05 PM I seriously want to see pics of this and the chromoly cage and the command center. I want to see what the hell he's even commanding. I don't want to hear about what there "will be". Get to work and take pics. :flipoff2:

Urban Assault Vehicle mean trips to the mall end with him saying, "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again".
boom harvey 05-04-2009, 11:06 AM I would think that a Satellite phone would prove more useful then a "high powered" CB. If you are wanting to build a UAV why not get a duece n half cut it down to size any equip it.

This guy did a pretty good build. he's got some good pics and fab work done.
as blazerboy85 said a bob would be a good idea. For reference of moving the gas tank, I'm in the works of putting mind in between the rear fender wells. Building a box around it inside and probably gonna have it flush up with the top of the fender wells. You can cut off about 14-18" depending on how you do the bob. Cut the frame right behind the spring perches and you have a good spot to mount a bumper. Good luck.

hey stop being such a naysayer.
this thread was going great untill you had to start in with the potty mouth.
now back to the awesome tech.
and to the Original poster. I recommend you TIG weld the cromoly exo cage for maximum strength.
I also suggest you get an ARB fridge for the urban assault aspect of the build. It keeps your beverages frosty cold.
also, I moved this back to chevy where it belongs.
great tech.
now come awn fellas. don't be mean. help this guy with his cool project :smokin:

88Burby 05-06-2009, 01:27 AM HA. I missed alot from this thread. I'm not gonna lie, I was intoxicated when I posted this thread.
HOWEVER.
I AM looking towards a build of that magnitude. It is NOT for a "zombie attack" or to take on the government or what not. Its simply for a functional vehicle that can take on anything I throw at it.
I like everyones idiotic responses, as well as appreciate the few of you who were serious in your responses.
Im not new. I DO know a thing or two. Yes im the guy who got rid of a truck due to a blown motor. So what? Too much work, too little money and time. To each his own.
I got a guy whos gona weld it all up for me, hes a lot better at it than I am.
Im not trying to make a tank, Im simply adding in some very nice modifications to keep me going when im on (or off) the road. Im co-owner or a small race syndicate. The main focus is the baja 1000. Two jeepspeeds and a small yota are being built for the race. My truck will be a chase/tow vehicle.
Im far from professional. Im far for noob. Gimme a break here, I didnt come here to bust your balls, im just sayin, dont bust mine.
Plus you never know when there may be an alien invansion or the machines will rise against us! FTW :flipoff2:

ok so your 19. how are you going to fund this "project"? it seems like you didnt have the money for a new motor before, but now all of the sudden you can afford a chrome moly chassis for an "urban assault vehicle?"
Im not saying you lying or anything, but im a little skeptical of how you plan on doing this.
Im 17 y/o and i make 6.60 an hour. And it would take me YEARS of saving to have enough money to even PLAN on starting a build of this magnitude.
Lucky_Thirteen 05-06-2009, 01:39 PM So you don't have the money or time to replace a motor, but you have the money and time to build an UAV?:laughing:
fister13 05-06-2009, 02:03 PM If you think replacing a motor( 8hrs) is too much time wait till you build a truck...
88Burby 05-06-2009, 03:53 PM A motor swap takes money and time immediatly. I didnt have that at the moment. A complete and total build is done over time. I have my shop to do the work at. I decided to go with a suburban, to keep my daily driver just that, my daily driver. IFS isnt very durable either, as you all know. I have a friend with an 89 3/4 ton suburban with a bad trans, decent truck, no rust, all body work done and new paint and interior as well, motors got 35k on the rebuild. I have a th400 with an np 205 at the shop that i was planning on selling, but i think itll do more good in the suburban than going at sale. He was agrand for the suburban, we're working something out right now. I have access to alot of different hard body chevy parts, the owner of my company and I have three of them in there being built right now, it helps to know people. Gona go with a D60/14BFF combo as well as the 350/th400/np205 (I cant stand the thought of putting a shitty 208 in there.)
Gutter Runner 05-06-2009, 04:52 PM Like I said before....

Sounds like you're trying to build a desert pre-runner/chase truck. Why didn't you just come out and say that in the first place?
You need to realize the amount of noob crap questions that are posted on this forum everyday, and how many of them are not posted in the noob forum where they are safe from the wrath of God and the regular members here. Serious questions get serious answers here, and the ones that seem way out of the ball park aren't taken seriously. It's just the way of the interwebs. And regardless...threads are worthless without pics.

This would be a nice sig. Get out of highschool, go into college and get a good education. Once you are older and have money from said education start your build. All you are going to get here is a bunch of drunken assholes with very thin wallets that do not like to help the next generation of pavement queens.
sdrocks 05-08-2009, 08:38 PM i believe he wants to build a copy of the um-50 urban assault vehicle because he just watched Stripes
Do you realize what chromo IS? Its not DOM tubing that most make cages out of, and would just be completely UNREAL to build an exo out of. If you can't afford to replace a motor in a truck, you CAN'T afford a custom built chromo EXO. If you can then you surely could afford to PAY someone to put a BRAND NEW motor in a truck. Don't blow smoke up our asses, get realistic and truthful with us here..we're not a bunch of assholes (haha) if you're straight up and honest with us. How stupid do you think we are?
