: "pigs Accross America"
fc187 09-04-2002, 02:56 PM Calling all 55 owners! Morgan and I have a vision! A weekend where pig ownwers accross the country can come together and wallow in filth.
Here on the west coast we will meet at the Deer Valley trail that streches between Hwy88 and Hwy4 on the weekend of Oct 12 and 13.
We would like to have some one on the east coast and some one in central states to organize runs in their areas. All on the same weekend!
We had fourteen 55's show for our rubicon run last year and we hope to top that this year at Dear Valley. And if the rest of the country puts together runs in their area,... we should be able to get at least 40! :fj:
What do ya say?
RHINO 09-04-2002, 03:09 PM i am going to try for the deer valley meet, but i will probly have to drive the pig there, will there be a most piggy miles driven award?
fc187 09-04-2002, 03:13 PM dude, if you show I will buy you a case of your fav

Prizes? Heck, do we do prizes?
:)
Last year W. Harrold drove down from Portland, OR and Eric Lint drove up from Laguna Niguel, CA. Mark Whatley flew down from Alaska and Max Balmain flew down from Seattle.
I will shake your hand and give you a beer if you make it to the run.

spalding 09-04-2002, 04:11 PM oh good, another party for me to crash with the 80!
by the way Don, it was great to see the 55 this past weekend. sorry we did not get to wheel! in the Deer Valley area there are alot more trails. you can actually get to the Deer Valley trailhead by forest service road that takes you over a 10K foot pass, drops you into the Blue Lakes campground. you can spank deer valley in about 2 hours 45 min. if you push, cruise over to the Slick Rock trail off of 4 and do it in about 1 and half hours, puts you down at that little resivore, from there, you can hit a couple of more trails from there. lotso' wheel'n in them thar hills boy! should be fun. that first big meadow is magical, or maybe it was just the mushrooms.

morgan 09-04-2002, 04:22 PM Nick, you can get off work 10/12 and 10/13?

Right on! How old? Not trying to set Sam (5) up, or anything... :)
Morgan
Iron Goddess 09-04-2002, 06:03 PM The twins are 12 (not prissy). 16 year old thinks shes an adult (not much fun for a 5 year old)
kathy
morgan 09-04-2002, 07:10 PM 12 and 16? That's grown-up to a 5-year-old! :)
If I bring his uncle, he'll be set.
Looking forward to the run.
Morgan
DavidW 09-04-2002, 07:20 PM Nolen, I'm 2 hrs away from OKC or DFW. I work 24 on and 48 off, so I should be able to make it. I'll need a new clutch before then but that won't be a problem.
:usa:
I was jealous last year when I heard of the 55 run, and my piggy wasn't driving yet. But this time... IT'S ALIVE!!! I'm in- if you'll have me. That, and there's a couple guys in my area that I could talk to- YoungDogs? You out there? And a guy who isn't on POR...
What's the trail like? How capable does the pig need to be?
Brandon Zipp. :fj:
wngrog 09-05-2002, 03:32 AM Saturday the 12th we can meet somewhere in Texas that is convenient. I don't think any of the Pigs in our area are Hard Core, so somewhere mild for a trail and some beers would suit us all fine.
I will work out the place, just get the time off!
Kaderabek 09-05-2002, 06:11 AM I'll see what I can do about rounding up the East coast Pig owners that weekend. Who's game, and where do you want to go?
TJK
DavidW 09-05-2002, 06:12 AM Maybe the place in Nocona? Still haven't been there, but your pics of looked pretty good. My 55 is still on stock suspension so nothing too wild (yea right). Maybe my wife & daughters can drag a trailer to bring me home on. That would be a fun phone call to make.

Nocona is too rough for what I have in mind....we don't really have any hardcore Pig drivers in this are yet....some are in the making though.
I am thinking about The Slab, The Brazos River (west of Ft. Worth), Gilmer (not really) or the WMA fire roads in Clayton.
It all depends on who I hear back from. It will most likely end up being a beer drinking/photo session. Our statewide TLC meeting-ICBM is the following weekend in Gilmer, so this may not be good timing.
If we have to, we will be a week late and forward pictures anyway.
We will have to do a 3-way Toyota Trails article for sure on this.

Same story on the East coast too I think. More social than hard core wheeling.

I'm game for that.

YoungDogs 09-05-2002, 08:59 AM Morgan & Don,
Count me in! (And my almost stock :fj: has more dents than when you saw it on the 55 Rubicon run) Oh man, I just remember I'll need to get my headlights working! I'll get on it this weekend!
dieselcruiserhead 09-05-2002, 09:25 AM The weekend of the 13th/14th is the same weekend of the Fall Gathering up in New Hampshire. Up until last year it used to be at the site of the old Catamount Cruiser Challenge but is now moved up to an off-road park which some people ran last year as well. Since there's already a Cruiser event I'd recommend merging it into that (since it's the same weekend). Maybe have a pig's run in the event (though I didn't see a single pig last year).
I'd contact jmylie@earthlink.net in YankeeToys who has a '77 FJ55.
Good luck,
Andre
Schly 09-05-2002, 09:48 AM Mine's running but not road (or trail) worthy yet. (Meaning safe.)
Maybe next year.:(

and no, you can't sacrifice either of my cats (or dogs)!
Kaderabek 09-10-2002, 05:40 AM So far the east coast end of this venture features me and one other snout in Slade, KY on October 12. Come on east coasters, this is embarrassing (not to mention not worth driving to KY for)!

YoungDogs 09-12-2002, 09:16 PM Thanks to Brandon Zipp, my headlights now work!
One month to go!
Morgan & Don, when will the details be posted?
Also, Morgan you may want to share Jerald's write-up & pics on your site as a way to get others psyched-up & signed-up!

Please share anything and everything you have that might wake up the east coast Pig owners!

Kaderabek 09-16-2002, 05:45 AM Well, having griped about the lack of east coast pigs across America, I'm now out of the run myself. I help with a fund raiser at our church each October, largely taking delivery of and selling about a thousand pumpkins. Unfortunately I just received the confirmed delivery date of said pumpkins -- 8 am, October 13. No way I can be in KY (or really anywhere else) that weekend, and no way to get out of this obligation. Rats. Sorry about this.

cancel your trip!

Whoohoo! Pigs Across America is back on for me.
Whoops, lost the only other East coast guy going yesterday to a wedding. Hmmm... what to do, what to do...? Slade, KY is a long way to go to see another Pig (no offense, really, but I see a Pig every morning). Hmmm... maybe gather in Pegram, TN, Pete, Tim, me, that's 3 Pigs. Fly to TX? Fly to CA? Vexing.
Thoughts?

as it stands now the date will be the same as posted.
as far as time goes,.. I would say meeting at either trail head should be worked out between 2 groups, hwy4 and hwy88. I will be coming in the HWY4 side (closer to me). I can bring a group in that way and some one else (voulenters?) can bring one through the 88 route. we will meet in the middle at the camp grounds, eat and work out the other runs from there. There are other runs in the area.
I will be at the hwy4 trail head between 10am and 11am if anybody wants to follow me in.
I will also try to arrange having both trailheads marked (TH are on the highways) and I will throw together a make shift map for those of you who are not familiar with the area.

Cool, thanks. Long shot, but stranger things have happened. Worst case I'll drive over to Tennessee and get together with at least one other Pig, maybe two.

I just finished reading Morgan's write up on the pig run last year- ( http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/pigrun2001/index.php ) I have probably read it 10 times in the past year, and I can't get enough! The pics are awesome, and it makes me giddy as a schoolgirl. I am so stoked about this upcoming pig run!

Don,
I'll be going in the 88 side, I'd be happy to guide them in. I think an FJ40 should be leading anyway :D :D
Only thing is I won't be up to the trail head until mid afternoon Saturday.
Krusty is going to meet me at my place Saturday morning, then we'll head on up.
fc187 09-18-2002, 10:40 AM Actually Don, If you can head up to the trail head either the night before or early that morning and post some kinda sign. That would be cool!
Reddog 09-18-2002, 11:02 AM I'll see if I can get up there the night before and mark the trail, you want me to pee on every tree ? :D ( that's a Rock Dog joke )
Actually it's a little bit confusing finding the trail head, it's not clearly marked and there's a lot of road construction on that side by the Lakes.
So I'll go up there and nail up a bunch of pie plates, mark em 55 Run.
For those that don't know ,
Take Highway 88 east out of Stockton all the way up into the mountains.
You'll go past Silver Lake, Kirkwood Meadows, Caples Lake, then over Carson Pass. On the other side of Carson pass watch for a road that goes off to the right.
Sign will say Hope Valley, Blue Lake Road.
Take that road 12 miles to Lower Blue Lake....That's the start of the Deer Valley Trail.
I'll mark the turnoff on Highway 88 and every fork in the road thereafter.
See ya up there !
fc187 09-18-2002, 01:03 PM Thanks Don, You Rock! :smokin:

wngrog 09-20-2002, 04:08 AM Hey Man,
It is the weekend before our statewide TLC meeting in Gilmer Texas so nobody could get together 2 weekends in a row.
Make sure you make it to Gimer for ICBM the following weekend to meet the entire Lone Star Landcruiser Crew.
