I've got an equipment trailer I am rewiring. It has electric brakes, but no breakaway controller. Basically brakes, stop, turn, tail/marker, and ground I guess.
Do I need 6 or 7 strand wire?
Thanks

7 pin connectors are more common on newer trucks. Even if you don't use them all.

Yeah, my other trailer is a 7 pin connector. Question is though, do I NEED to use 7 strand wire on trailer or can I use 6 strand wire and use a standard 7 pin connector to truck?

you can use 6 or 7 individual strands if you want to.....if you ever add a break away. You'll need to add the extra wire. Why not max it out from the beginning?
I have a 4x8 open trailer with a 7 pin connector.

Or use the extra wire for a back up light / cargo light

you only need 6 wires which would easily do everything you've asked.

You only need 6 wires for breakaway.
left turn
right turn
lights
brakes
constant power (breakaway is charged from this)
ground
the 7th wire woudl be the aux wire, usually used for reverse lights. Not usually wired to anything on most pickup trucks.
Your choice, but 6 wire is enough.

Everyone else pretty much covered it, but typically the only time I've seen a 7 wire trailer is when it was an RV, and had backup lights.
