: zj 5.9 & aw4 into a TJ.... doable?
Dust Puppy 09-04-2002, 06:25 PM ok im toying with ideas for the jeep..... yeah yeah i know i should get the jeep back on the road before i even think about another project. but anyways..... im seriously thinking about a v8 from a grand cherokee and an aw4.
mainly im looking at this swap because of the jeep stuff is all run off basicly the same computer system so making it all work shouldnt be too bad.
does anyone have any insites into this swap. i know someone did a aw4 into a tj and ive seen a the 5.9 in a yj.
any info would be helpful. i was thinking about maybe putting this all together and getting an atlas to go behind it. then sliding the whole deal in when its all ready.
thanks

manhattanjeep 09-04-2002, 06:52 PM Don't know about the AW4, but one of the magazines had a TJ on their website with the 5.9 in it. It was a green TJ. I am leaving right now, but if you haven't found it, I will search for it, and post a link.

JEEPRZ 09-04-2002, 07:15 PM AW4 wont work with the Chrysler engine. You need to use either the ZJ trans, or a 999/ 727
SeanP 09-04-2002, 09:34 PM Someone is selling a 5.9/NV4500/241 for $1500 on the FS board right now. Might be a little long for a TJ. I would be interested in hearing if someone dropped one of these into an XJ/TJ and what the engine mounts look like.

Jason R 09-04-2002, 11:28 PM Look on JPs site...theys a TJ there with a 5.9 & tranny from a Van backed to an Atlas II. Has some useful information. :D

THis has a 5.9 and Atlas but I don't remember what tranny. Call and ask for Buddy, he's pretty nice, pick his brain.

It has a 5.9 out of a Dodge Truck and had a stock 231 t-case, but is now getting a 205. The auto is either a 904 or 999.
JohnnyJ 09-05-2002, 08:36 AM A friend has a 5.9/auto/231 that fits nicely in his TJ. It's currently in the wiring stage, but it should be on the road soon.
Dust Puppy 09-05-2002, 10:04 AM hmmm the way it sounds most of these setups you guys are saying have 999's behind them. it might not be a bad idea for me to just leave my 999 (which had been rebuild completly) where it is and just swap the motor out. then if i HAVE to look at the tranny later.
thanks ill look at the links.

JeeperJake 09-05-2002, 02:58 PM curious what the wiring is like when keeping the 999 and swapping the 5.9 in. anyone know? is it basically just unplug, plug in, or is there much rewiring?

JEEPRZ 09-05-2002, 05:36 PM You will need to get a Chrysler 999 that matches the 5.9 bellhousing, then swap your internals/ tailshaft and housing
Jason R 09-05-2002, 06:45 PM I wouldnt use a 999 if you can avoid it...
JeeperJake 09-08-2002, 06:00 PM so what would be the best automatic transmission to use? my 999 just crapped out on me this weekend and it only had about 50,000 miles on it at the VERY most , more like 40. anyway, im considering this swap now....
Jason R 09-08-2002, 06:20 PM Well my suggestion is to do the WHOLE DRIVETRAIN at the same time. Powerplant, Tranny, Transfer case, drivelines, and axles. You will only have to do everything once, much easier.
I'd look into using a bigger dodge tranny, it SHOULD hold up just fine, just put a strong cooler on it.
Good Luck :D
Blazin77OR 09-08-2002, 09:07 PM I believe the fammed Currie "FireAnt" runs the 5.9 along with a mopar trans...

Nope. 4.7L
xjpart2 09-09-2002, 05:47 AM and 5spd auto
JeeperJake 09-09-2002, 08:16 AM 5 sp. auto?? what does that come from?
just a little side question...if i had to replace my tranny, and it was gonna cost like $2000, should i go ahead and do an engine/tranny swap? or is it too much trouble - i dont have much more money than that right now....
