My info in 3/11/02
Just got off the phone with Randy at Advance Adapters. ( nice guy and took time with me). In talking with randy he said they are pulling a roc box right now to go into another cruiser to test installation, gear whine, different lubricants etc. He said the gear whine was much less than expected. He said that both installations are going in behind 2F and fairly stock units. They have run into some problems such as room for the box, I guess it's hitting the rear portion of trans cover hump. Trying to get the top bolts into a stock unit was difficult. They said a body lift may be in order on a stock 40'... . He also said the rear crossmember needs to go and AA has a new profile lazer cut rear t-case crossmeber that would be needed. These are all problems I am sure can be overcome. The box is still a month or two out. Randy said when they begin full fabrication they will build in 50 to 100 lots at a time. I would guess it will be longer because that's just how it goes. They expect a backlog.

RHINO 09-04-2002, 11:12 PM i was waiting on the rocbox, but i like marlins toybox better, so i'm waiting on that.
Eskimo 09-05-2002, 05:25 AM Doesn't MD11FR8DOG have one?
ROCK HUGGER 09-05-2002, 06:11 AM I saw one at a a local cruiser shop, he had just got it from AA.
it was going behind a stock 4sp.
I am not sure if the other models are available yet.

I think his is the marlin unit..
krcruiser 09-05-2002, 09:13 AM I saw a cruiser with a stock driveline and a Klune....it is another way to get low, rear dshaft was 18" long though
Jason M 09-05-2002, 09:22 AM With all of the adapters that you have to use to make the klune work it is way too long for a normal 40.
18" driveshafts have a very hard time flexing well.

Yep, its sitting in my garage in its box still!!:( My SO is done (tack welded at least) and when I get back from my next trip (9/15) I'll be sending the frame to get blasted and painted. THEN I can drop in the drivetrain!! I'm starting my SM420 rebuild today/tonight/tomorrow and hope to have it done by the time I leave Fri night!
I got a chance to visit Scott Johnston and Bob Brown during an Oakland layover last month and saw both of their set ups!! Scott has his behind an SM420 and Bob's is behind an SM465. I got a demo of Scott's - he's been running his for 2 yrs now (lucky bastage!!:flipoff2: ). He's running 4.70 gears in his!! Pretty cool to see him engage 1st/low/low on a downhill and get out of the truck and walk along beside it. Way Cool!!
Here's a pic of mine, including the tcase mount that Marlin threw in as a freebie!! :smokin:
What did you spend for the Marlin Toyboxx?
......and how come you got one.....*butt kiss* : )
Jason M 09-05-2002, 10:08 AM The last time I talked to Marlin he was sending them out right now.
:)
How is the three speed tcase holding up behind that much torque?
krcruiser 09-05-2002, 01:09 PM Jason,
it's sitting on a SUA vehicle with 4" MAF springs and he does have a CV and a 6" slip yoke. dual ARB's 170:1 and 37"MTR .
While it may not flex like a 4 link system, it still gets it for a DD :) This truck ran the box at Rubithon no problems, there was a video link to the site hosting it somewhere on either this forum or the pickup forum.
RHINO 09-05-2002, 03:33 PM The last time I talked to Marlin he was sending them out right now.
yup, but unfortunately for me its not out for the cruiser 4 speed yet, however i have also talked to them a few times and i will hopefully get one of the first ones shortly;) at roughly the same price and AA rocbox, i definatley think marlin has a better unit. plus once i get the first one in i can add another one or two or three. i have lots of rear DS.
Jason M 09-05-2002, 03:37 PM more options are always better!!!
Although I really would not put more than one crawl box in front of a Cruiser Tcase!
I still think one 4.0 (or 4.7) and a 2.3 would be perfect.
Think of hte options!
So Rhino,
When you gonna goto a SM465?
RHINO 09-05-2002, 03:45 PM i dont plan on it, think of these options, two stock toy box's and stock cruiser t-case. 2.28 or 5.20 or 10.19 i like that better than a single which would be 4.7 or 9.21 ehh?

That can't hold up (watch, I bet I am totally wrong here ;) ). You would have almost the same ratios if you went with dual mini tcases with a 4.7 in one and a 2.3 in the other.
I just can't see when people are breaking their tcases with autos and a small v8 how 5.2:1 in front of the tcase will hold up.
Hell I was super paranoid when I went to the SM420/three speed tcase and 38's!

I doubt you guys want my input..but:flipoff2:
Shreg did this with his 40 that is stock, except for a SM465:eek: Well locked and 36's also

Jason M 09-05-2002, 04:05 PM Nice crossmember, are there any nuts holding that rear DS on???
:flipoff2:
Good pic
That is what I am worried about with all of these doublers and crawlboxes.
RHINO 09-05-2002, 04:10 PM i think alot of it has to do with the right foot, and we all know the 4 speed case is a WHOLE bunch stronger.:(
but it'll be along time if i get more than one toybox, i am going to run one toybox, stock with my drivetrain it'll put me at 90:1, i think thats low enough for everything i'll do.
oh yeah and two t-case savers, one on top one on back, i think that'll add plenty of streanth

Just some chin-nuts:flipoff2:
Shreg is REALLY easy on the skinny pedal, also. Even more so when he doesn't do the Birf dance the night before:D

I have one of FC187's (or was that reddog) Never used it.
I'll see it to ya for $35 and send it with the DS if ya want.
RHINO 09-05-2002, 04:19 PM thats the one that goes on top right?? if so i have one, and i'm gonna make one for the back, then weld'em together.
I saw this happen 3 times last year and I do not even wheel that much compared to most of you.
I am talking about that cracked case by the bald guy....
Whats the price on the Marlin?

My sentiments exactly! I doubt whether the 4 speed case can take the torque for very long - I have also heard of tcase nose cones taking a dump. Do the math - $1200 for a RokBox - $600 (?) for the back-of-the-case saver - and viola - you are at $1800! The 3.7 Atlass is about that much - add to that a tranny adapter ($400) and it totals $2200 - well OK add in a centered diff axle (D60?) and some other BS and you are up to $3000. What's my point - with the Cruiser tcase you will need a good supply of spare cases, with an Atlas you can just fergedaboudit. Any questions? Any answers?

Prices are listed on Marlin's site. I think it was $1400ish! And, why did I get one?? So I could walk next to it in the 4th of July parade here in town next summer!!:flipoff2:
RHINO 09-05-2002, 09:11 PM hey krusty your forgeting the options man, the whole appeal to a doubler is the options, if your worried about case strength put a 203 and split case behind your tranny, both of those would be a tad under the atlas price.

Actually, I understand the options - and I appreciate what you are saying - the 203/split case route has merits - yes, low and then double low is a great option. I really like the RokBox as it does not add to drivetrain length (or at least minimally in my case) - I just dont feel like adding a spendy back-of-the-case reinforcement to make sure I dont do the splits, so to speak! Given the reasonable price and low hassle factor, I just might find one in my rig one of these days:emb4:
Do they have a RockBox to split case option - they should! Then you would have my attention (the 203 route is just too big/long and heavy for my liking). Yup, I'm being Krusty:D
Eskimo 09-06-2002, 07:05 AM Options, options, options... I've got 4 options.. low, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.. GEAR... Yes, having 2.3, 4.7, or 10.8 is appealing, but a single 3.7 case behind a SM465 or 420 has plenty of flexability, no?
It just seems sometimes that people get so hung up in shifting their t-cases,m they forget about the first low-range shifter...the tranny!
Just my $0.01.. my pay cuts took the other $0.01
Jason M 09-06-2002, 07:45 AM Kind of.
I really prefer the availability of multiple gearsets.
I would prefer not to have to drive around all the time in Second or third. Or even 4th.
Most of the driving I have ever done only requires about 80:1 but then there are the times that 150:1 would be nice. (It really is not that hard to shift the second tranny into gear ;)
Besides, if they ever open suprise up again you will love the lower gears!!
Remember, most of us do not use our rigs tlike the comp guys do (well, Nolen rolls as much and Spaceghost actually does compete so they do not count :flipoff2: ) the comp guys need wheelspin on a lot of obsticles. I figure doing it slow and graceful is the best way.
And I do understand that a lot of what I just said mainly applies to the west coast. When there is mud/moss on the rocks wheelspin is king and my trusty 2F is a boat anchor ;)
wngrog 09-06-2002, 07:49 AM Get an Auto
No really, I agree with Mace....crazy to spend all that $$$ and leave the Cruiser case in the mix.
The ONLY Cruiser case I would consider would be the Split case.

Bastard.
If you want options, the auto takes care of all those levers you guys love so much.:flipoff2:
And this is what happens when you give someone 300 HP when they are used to 80 hp.
cruzila 09-06-2002, 08:40 AM How is the three speed tcase holding up behind that much torque? [/B]
It is holding up fine in mine. 2 years. I rarely use low in the stock t-case. Little Sluice and such. The torque path through the t-case is a straight line in high range so I think it will hold up for a long time. Also I do not "get it" too much.
Scott
PS I did blow up a rear hub (FF like the TT article) on Dusy last weekend.
KrustyKruiser 09-06-2002, 09:01 AM Scott:
Thanks for your input - as I hoped, the Cruiser Tcase holds up if you dont over-use the extra low range box too much, and are easy on the "happy" pedal:D

If you have seen Easy Rider, just make sure you get a permit before you participate in the parade!:usa: :flipoff2: :p
Gunmetalcruz 09-06-2002, 09:31 AM I got my Rock box last week. I got number 4 out of the first batch of 30. The main reason besides gearing was when my Dad did the 350 conversion he put the engine pretty far forward. So recently when changing to the cherokee rub.express springs, I was getting so much flex without a limiting cable I couldn't keep the ujoints in the front driveline from binding. So without moving the motor mounts I got to gain 5.75 of front driveline and I have plenty of rear to spare since it's moved back 5 + inch's. To get to the point, had it in for last weekend ran from tahoe city to little sliuce and back. It worked sweet. It only seems loud when I was in fourth in the R.box. But generally in the nasty stuff second and third in the box worked real nice then back out to the normal gears. I like 80 to one most of the time but it's nice to pull it into 288 to 1.
Truth said though i am worried about the stock case. Crossing my fingers. Tom
RHINO 09-06-2002, 04:57 PM Get an Auto
naw, the money required to build it is as much as a doubler, besides i dont wanna rev my 2F when it produces its full est. 250 lb torque well under 1700 rpm.
cruisilla thats what i'm talkin about, i want low gears so i can take it easy, not "get it". i think my case will be fine for me. but there are options, like the LT230 rover case which looks like an aluminum 205 with offset outputs and 3:1 stock.(do a search)
Do they have a RockBox to split case option - they should! Then you would have my attention (the 203 route is just too big/long and heavy for my liking). Yup, I'm being Krusty
they are working on it if not already out,and you can get 3:1 gears for split case. and for what its worth, not knockin the rocbox, but the toybox has way better gears (factory toyota cut)whith standard 2.28 but optional 4.0 and 4.7 soon and is about the same length for about the same money.
lets see, sm 465-4.7 toybox and 3.0 split case with stock 4:11 gears=376:1 cool but too much.

That seems to be a chronic problem with your cruiser, regardless of HP. :flipoff2:
Lance 09-07-2002, 10:06 AM I broke 3 3spd tcases in half with 35" BFGs, 4.10 Cruiser axles, and a stock 350. I didn't have any "tcase savers" but I am still skeptical to see how these transfer cases will survive doubling/tripling/quadrupling the torque going into them. :nuke:
dieselcruiserhead 09-07-2002, 12:57 PM Got a buddy who's broken 3 split cases with a mildly souped up 2F. Truck's called the "Diggrr" 1 one of those times he was flying through mud holes and caught some traction, t-case go pop. Other two times though just 4 wheeling.... Makes me think that other than Birfields maybe even the split t-case is still the weakest point on a stock Cruiser. Add HP and it makes it even more of a weak point.
So I dunno what the best option is...
Are there any options other than the Atlas that are offset front and rear? NP t-cases?
RHINO 09-08-2002, 12:44 AM Are there any options other than the Atlas that are offset front and rear? NP t-cases?
200
200 what ?????????
You mean a Dana 20?....
RHINO 09-08-2002, 11:00 AM 200 what ?????????
well do you see right above where deiselcruiser asked about any other NP t-cases with double offset?? and you see where i wrote 200 right?? so if we add the Q and the A we get NP200:flipoff2:
seriously, the NP200 is found in almost all the dodge military rigs, M715?? or somethin, the cool lookin big p-up. anyway its a cast iron unit with offset f/r and they come married and diforced.
Thanks for the info.... I guess I used to own a NP200 and didn't even know it. I had a 59 Dodge M37:eek:
By the way...any of you interested in a AA rock box ,they have a blue light special "sale price" on the rock Box ,$1030 until the end of the month.
I spoke with Rob at extension 514 at AA yesterday.
