: Gm 10b front axel swap?
93_bigbadxj 05-07-2009, 11:11 AM Well this is probably dumb but but im looking to not spend much money here and every friend i have is a gm guy. I also have lots of gm parts therefore i have no front axles that are drivers drop. My buddy came up with the idea of just pulling the tubes or cutting them and swapping the long and short side. Sound easy to do and since it is low pinion i would have had to cut and turn the Cs anyways to reduce the angle on the driveline. The reason im even thinking this is cuz i have numerous 10 bolts and parts, spare shafts blah blah so switching to a 44 i would have to start a whole new collection lol. Im going full width and already have a 10.25 sterling 4.10 gears so what u guys think. If you think im an idiot for thinkin this oh well flame on.

Needless to say I would not waist welding wire or time needed to swap tubes, thats a real PITA.
You would have a "big" and "bad" xj if you did full width 10 bolts.
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 12:37 PM You could run a 10 bolt pretty easy if you used a Dana 300 and ran the driveshaft on the pass side. But if your already 1 ton in the rear, and your buddy has a bunch of Chevy shit, why don't you just use a 60?

I want to wheel with as little money possible and use what i got, my 3 link wont work with a passenger t case nor do i have a dana 300 and all i, we got is a couple 14b rears, bunch of 10b fronts, 2 44 front, all passenger, and one 12b rear. I do have a closed knuckle 60 with drum brakes but man that thing is old and will take some money to fix up if i could find parts.

I had one in my 85 cheby with a 454 and 38.5 hawgs and it did ok with just axle joints going on with 4.56s. So why not in a cheerokee that is 1500 to 2000 pounds lighter with less power and smaller tires. Well i just talked to my dad and he said it shouldnt be too bad and then i wont have the spring perch to cut and grind down like i would with a ford 44. If worst comes to worse i just cut up a 10b housing. Big deal right?

Oh and the use what i have aint gonna work cuz the dana 30 r and p went poof and so did the 8.25 carrier. Ill just put a clutch in the sammy for now till i get this front lined out.

what i was thinking exactly, i can almost give you a hp dana 30 thats in perfect shape ......when i blew my previous d30 up i went to junk yard and bought two that were in great shape cost me a 100 each with all steering and warranty. for 30 days...\
seems that would be alot cheaper then swaping a 10 bolt in, considering it would bolt up in less than 2 hrs

It's been a general consensus for a long time that replacing a D30 with a D44 that has stock axles is a waste of time. Same with your 10 bolt idea. With stock junkyard shafts you'll blow the u-joints just as fast as you will with a D30. No one recommends spending the time to put in a D44 with stock shafts, and no one will recommend wasting the time to put in a 10 bolt with stock shafts.
No one cares what you do with your rig. But it's kind of silly to rag on the rest of us when we all answer your question the same way. But, hey, full width is cool, especially if it's free. :shaking:

He was trying to tell me it would be easier to stay jeep axles. I have a good dana 30 front but not a good rear. I sold the 35 outta my parts jeep. Thats why im causing all this comotion cuz i need a full with front axle lol.

I said full width is cool, i never said xj 44s were cool. Its getting the 10.25 in the rear. And if the 10b works out it will get that. If not ill look into the dana 60 i have but if im not mistakin the closed knuckle has no better shafts than a 10b or 44.

you would be better off spending the time making one of those 14 bolt rears a front axle. probably wouldn't be a whole lot more work than hacking up a shitty 10 bolt
